Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and other Bundesliga business 2014/2015

I still can't believe that we tried to play an offside trap in Wolfsburg's half.

De Bruyne benefited from the high line Bayern carried on playing and early balls fired up to him.

Tactically Pep was second best.

Wolfsburg played very well, they were set up to frustrate and hit on the break and their composure on those counters was superb. That was the poorest I've seen Bayern play in ages though, only Benat and Robben looked like making anything happen, Alonso and Schweini were very poor in midfield, which was the biggest surprise.

I don't think it changes anything as regards the destination of the title but it's a huge boost for Wolfsburg as they look to keep the distance between themselves and the other CL chasers.

Great start to the second half of the season. De Bruyne was again magnificent, as were Arnold and Rodriguez.

I told it the last weeks already - Wolfsburg are only one striker away from being a top team. They usually do not convert their chances as they did today.

De Bruyne developed excellent. He does not go down in top matches.

And Bayern - they probably need a wake up call after the winter break like with Salzburg last season.

Typical after-winter break playing by Bayern. Lacking precision (was almost painful to watch at times) and finetuning. Usually, they can win such games in spite of this, only tonight it was against an in-form very good Wolfsburg, who were fired up by the Junior Malanda drama.

What's going on with Lewandowski? Does he have trouble adapting to Guardiola's style? He rarely looked impressive when I watched him play.

Wolfsburg's off the ball movement was fantastic. Whenever they caused a turnover, the other players in the front 6 burst into spaces and created angles for the first or 2nd pass in the counter.

They have... Have you seen all the matches with Heynckes? I have... Some were terrible... a lot lucky...

Seriously? His last season was no fluke and it was a really good balance. I'd say Pep has introduced his own new style on the team, so it's difficult to say whether they've actually improved or not.

this pep love in knows no bounds...now jupps bayern were a lucky team
Sorry. Have you seen the matches? Some think that the matches against Juve and Barca have been the normal Heynckes football....

Lille, Bate and Valencia away... Fürth away and Mainz short after the winter break... Nürnberg... I am just talking about the second year and the ones I remember...

It was worse than the Bate game in the treble winning season though. Awful in every way, but bad games happen. The way we play the game always means if the players lose their concentration for a bit, we're in trouble at the back. It's a risky approach and needs the team to play with so much focus and determination for the full 90 minutes to work. I'm not too angry about a bad day, that's pretty normal and no one should expect the same determination the team showed in 12/13 in every game. But the quality of our set-pieces has nothing to do with any of that.

Maybe we should hire Heynckes as a set-piece coach for half a day each week. It's really what sets the treble winning season apart from Guardiola's side so far. We were vulnerable to counterattacks back then as well, but we were brilliant at defending set-pieces and scored many important goals after corners and freekicks. We had to, because we weren't as good opening up opponents as we're now, but it got the job done. That's one crucial ingredience that would put us on a much higher level. It's great that Guardiola agrees that we're awful at corners, nice to say that at press conferences. But do something about it ffs. There's zero plan behind our corners and that's something you can work on in training. So annoying.

So after that spectacular (and really shit) start yesterday, the Bundesliga continues today. Especially the evening game should be of interest. Will Dortmund start a run that could see them fight for a Europa league place at the end of the season or will Leverkusen make sure that Dortmund stay deep in the relegation battle. If Freiburg gets at least a draw at home against Frankfurt in the afternoon, Dortmund will go into the game sitting alone at the bottom of the table.

14:30 GMT
Freiburg - Eintracht Frankfurt
Hamburger SV - FC Cologne
Mainz 05 - Paderborn
Schalke 04 - Hannover 96
VfB Stuttgart - Borussia Moenchengladbach

17:30 GMT
Bayer Leverkusen - Borussia Dortmund

Tomorrow:

14:30 GMT
Werder Bremen - Hertha Berlin
16:30 GMT
Augsburg - Hoffenheim

Every team has such games, we also have them with Guardiola but the team in the 2nd season under Heynckes performed when it mattered and never looked like they could be slaughtered by an opponent. Guardiola's approach is a lot more risky and leaves us more vulnerable to teams with the quality to exploit them. So we might look even more dominant against average teams but so far we certainly haven't improved in the really important matches.
Guardiola also still hasn't found his "11" while that made us strong in the treble season, the right balance is simply not there yet.

In my view we had most of the ball, pushed and were ok, fine.
When some here disagree, great. Thats part of the football magic.
But dont attack me. I mean you, @Balu and @Piratesoup.
Have fun with the games(if you do. All I see is moaning and negative posts all the time from you, Balu, about anything, any day) and stop attacking other posters.
How old are you? 10?

Overall a deserved loss. Nice to see Wolfsburg coming of age a bit.
We are still in a great lead and will win the league. The team can only learn from tonight.
No Man Utd's :(

Dortmund, Stuttgart, Bremen and Hamburg are the bottom four in the league at the moment. That's completely insane.

Still fancy Paderborn to collapse.
Yeah, I expect them to finish 18th. It could easily be Hertha, Freiburg and Paderborn in the end as the bottom three, they're all close together. Still, if Dortmund lose the game today, they really look lost in the table and they play Augsburg on Wednesday, which is the kind of game you really need to be at your best to win. I'm really looking forward to the game in an hour.

One of Stuttgart or Hamburg will go down, they've been flirting with relegation for a season or two now, one of their luck will fail.

No matter who the game tonight goes, I don't think Dortmund will get relegated. It's not just because of their quality, you can still see that the team is trying and fighting - not even close to the typical dysfunctional bunch of mercenaries that's usually responsible for a big club being near the bottom.

Leverkusen: Leno - Hilbert, Spahic, Toprak, Wendell - Bender, Castro - Calhanoglu, Drmic - Bellarabi, Kießling

Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek, Hummels, Sokratis, Schmelzer, Ginter, Sahin, Reus, Kampl, Großkreutz, Immobile

Drmic starts, I'm sure you like that @RedSky

Let's wait if you still say the same after the game today ;)

Finally! That's a decent team by Leverkusen imo. Watch out for Wendell, he's been impressive.

Will be interesting to see how Dortmund do, that starting 11 lacks goals imo. Mark Reus out of the game and they'll be struggling.

Well it can't be worse than the Bremen game, so I don't think that one game will change my mind. Especially since Dortmund isn't even the favorite this time.

Yeah, that Dortmund team looks a bit strange. Großkreutz has been shit all season, Ginter in midfield? What's with Durm and Gündogan, are they injured? Both didn't even make the bench.

That high line is also what cost U dear against Madrid last season, wasn't it?
Our defending at set pieces was the bigger problem in my opinion, Ramos killed the tie with his two goals. Didn't really care that much about Real's counterattacks after that.
