Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and other Bundesliga business 2014/2015

Worth a shot. Maybe Anchan knows, he's good with numbers.

cant watch the game. how are we lining up? with 4 in the back?
It's a back four in defense with Alonso dropping between the centerbacks in possession to make it a back three. We're not playing well though.

Alright, that probably puts a lid on it. Finally a well played counter.

Lahm's run and pass to Ribery was brilliant for the 2nd goal and Müller with a hattrick.

We're closing in on 100 corners without a goal. Fingers crossed.

Neuer taking the piss like a champ.

Shaqiri makes it 4 but Frankfurt have given up completely. I feel kinda bad for them, they did a good job until Müller's double strike.

Pretty sure Ailton holds the offside record. Don't know how many it is though.

Mainz & Leverkusen with a draw, Hoffenheim and Schalke lose. Dortmund could actually make a huge step towards the top 6 if they beat Gladbach tomorrow.

Hard to believe, he´d run enough to get in and out of that many off-side positions.

It´s a meaningless stat anyway as Mueller´s three goals show.

With Ailton it was probably that he did not run enough OUT of this offside positions...

@Balu Do you happen to know the record for offsides by a single player in a Bundesliga match? Müller must be well on his way today.

I bet Gomez is the one with the most offsides. I remember a match in Villarreal where he mainly stood in the offside. But there has been a lot Bundesliga matches, too.

Today there were a lot of close calls and there was wrong ones. Eintracht had problems with throughballs this season and that is why they tried it a lot.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet quite a sum on Matteo not lasting until the season ends.

If that happens, Heldt should leave as well. How difficult can it be to find a good manager or at least a decent one. Since Rangnick left, he signed Stevens, Keller and Di Matteo. That's three times the wrong solution, it's really that simple.

The Bremen side of the mid 2000s must be one of the most underrated ever. Ailton, Micoud, Klose. Diego came in 2006 and was one of the best U23 players in the world.
I have seen Götze, Ribery, Robben and so on. But I never watched a player who toyed with the league that much.

You can narrow that down to both Klose and especially Micoud being massively underrated. Micoud had the very bad luck to be a contenporary of Zidane, otherwise he would be recognized as one of Frances finest players ever.

I often wonder what Horst Heldt represents. His dealings on the transfer market have shown good and bad decisions, when we only look at the individual contribution of the players, but imo he failed at the most important aspect of his job.

He has to define what kind of football Schalke04 is going to play in the foreseeable future, pick a strong manager who works according to this philosophy, sign players according to the wishes of the coach and the philosophy of the club and then give his chosen manager all the support he can muster.

Instead he's been tumbling from one bad decision to another, put managers in charge who had completely different ideas about football which lead to the signature of players for three different systems and on top of that he was a backstabbing bastard throughout Keller's tenure.

I agree, with di Matteo it's make or break for Horst Heldt as well, it has to be.

Boateng set a new record today, the first player to go 50 consecutive league games without a loss (wasn't part of the matchday squad in both games we lost last season). He's playing on a ridiculously high level for years now, but since Pep took over, his ability on the ball has reached crazy high levels as well. Just found a highlight video of him against Dortmund, and his passing range is just incredible and he makes it look so easy as well.

Bremen looks like the better team and take the lead against Stuttgart. The table is kinda beautiful at the moment, with Bayern first and Dortmund last.

For me after watching Schalke live at the stadium, it isn´t just a question of Di Matteo. I know they were missing Draxler but the team just isn't good enough in quality terms. I can't understand how a player like Fuchs plays in a top german team. It's not just a question of ability, his physical shape was abysmal. I remember very well when we were thought a lesson by Bayern for the last sixteen in the Champions League some years ago, this Schalke team just doesn't look like a german team. Their defensive organization was simply non existent. The suffered 7 goals from us in 2 games and would have a draw and one defeat if it wasn´t for the ref in germany.

To be fair, they played their regular leftback as a CM with their 4th choice CM next to him. They have 3 out of 4 centerbacks injured, so they needed their only remaining good CM in defense. Draxler being injured is the least of their problems actually, at least when it comes to the whole structure of the team. I don't think they're a great team, but a backline of Aogo - Matip, Höwedes - Uchida with Boateng - Neustädter in midfield is a completely different team to the one that played against Sporting.

And yes, Fuchs shouldn't be anywhere near the first team, I agree with that.

Fair enough. It wasn't just a question of me being bitter after the Germany game when i called it the worst team i saw in Alvalade this year (counting some relegation fodder in domestic football) but reading your explanation about their line up problems, then i can understand such sub par performance and woeful defensive performance. We have been also having some problems in defensive terms but our injury list doesn't come close to Schalke's. On a more positive note, had some beers with Schalke supporters. They were all very friendly but suffer from the same "criticizing everything in the club disease" that we Sporting fans also suffer:lol: I think they were already expecting a bad result

Can I ask why exactly is niklas sule highly regarded since hoffenhiem seem to concede a lot?

Well he's a 19 year old (just turned 19 as well) defender playing first team football at a Bundesliga team. There aren't many defenders in Europe who manage to do that.
His performances are good for the most part as well. This year Hoffenheim usually don't concede that many goals actually, they were even unbeaten in the League until last week.
But in the last two games they conceded 7 out of their 14 goals in total.

Understandable, I posted something similar in the CL matchday thread:

The line-up is shocking though. How many injuries do they have? Neustädter as centerback, Höger and Aogo in central midfield? Obasi should never start a game and Fuchs is probably the worst left back in the Bundesliga. They really shouldn't get a result with that team in the CL.

Still. If nothing else, I at least expected Di Matteo to improve their defensive organisation, but it's even worse in my opinion. No matter how bad their injuries are, there's simply no need to run around like headless chicken in defense for 5 games in a row.

I see. Didn't read your analysis in the CL thread and it was spot on. I started getting more confident when in our 3rd or 4th beer they started saying "I wouldn´t worry about tonight mate. It´s a question of how many we will conceed". About defensive organization, when you suffer a goal from Naby Sarr in a set piece, of course something is very wrong with your defence. We aren't exactly flying in form terms and had just lost 3-0 away to Guimarães for the league. It was a game of two teams in bad form. Entertaining but with woeful defensive performances. Ref wasn't that good either. This time for their behalf, there really was a handball in our box that the ref didn't see  Karma i would say

I used to love the green and orange, distinctive.

Kappas kits in the early-mid 00's were always nice. I had a Blackburn shirt at one point just because I liked it.

Best German defender by a country mile for me now and one of the top 5 in the world. He also had an amazing WC and was one of the main reasons for me that we won the trophy. He always had the talent but his tendency to brain fart quite frequently made him a liability for some time but now he rarely ever sets a foot wrong it seems.

City is probably still biting their own asses that they let him go. :D

I highly doubt he would have made the same development at City. They kinda suck at developing players.

Actually there was not much brain farts - not more than Hummels does or even less - but the ones he did were always emphasized. But - the offensive contribution of Hummels was better. That is something Boateng really improved the recent seasons. At Bayern it does not matter if Alonso gets mancovered as others can make the built up, too.

Schaaf - the Frankfurt coach - was asked in the press conference if he will let his team man cover Alonso like Dortmund did. He then just asked if it helped them anything...
