Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and other Bundesliga business 2014/2015

How the hell Schalke ended with 11 players on the pitch? Shocking Höger-decision.

This is the line-up for the upcoming U21 games:

Tor:
Timo Horn (1. FC Köln), Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona), Loris Karius (Mainz 05)

Abwehr: Christian Günter (SC Freiburg), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Dortmund), Julian Korb (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Robin Knoche (VfL Wolfsburg), Willi Orban (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Nico Schulz (Hertha BSC)

Mittelfeld: Leonardo Bittencourt (Hannover 96), Johannes Geis (Mainz 05), Moritz Leitner (VfB Stuttgart), Yunus Malli (Mainz 05), Max Meyer (Schalke 04), Amin Younes (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Emre Can (FC Liverpool), Kerem Demirbay (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Joshua Kimmich (RB Leipzig), Felix Klaus (SC Freiburg), Jean Zimmer (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Maximilian Arnold (VfL Wolfsburg)

Angriff: Kevin Volland (1899 Hoffenheim), Philipp Hofmann (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Serge Gnabry (FC Arsenal)

That is an amazing squad in my opinion. Players like Goretzka and Selke are not even included. Especially happy for Demirbay, he's having a very good season and was called up for the first time today, played for the Turkish U21 before.

holy sh*t that really is a hell of a squad. still heavily lacking on the CB/LB/RB options - which seems to be an ongoing topic though. also where are up-and-coming youngsters in the likes of goretzka, selke, werner, brandt, dudziak, jonas hofmann etc in that list?

an u21 midfield consisting of max meyer, max arnold, geis, goretzka, leitner, brandt, werner, bittencourt, younes etc is just way too crazy to not go far in the tournament. plus imagine if julian draxler wasn't already a proven senior national player. most of these guys have already been tried and tested to a somewhat successful/promising extent in bundesliga. all of these players bar dortmund's matthias ginter are feature more or less regularly in their teams' starting line-ups and/or are on, erm, heavy rotation.

korb - ginter - knoche - günther
- - - - - can - - - - - geis - - - - -
- bittencourt - arnold - - meyer -

btw were there ever any hints on why schalke's homegrown prospect sead kolasinac decided to play for bosnia? i found him to be one of the brightest prospects as LB in the league - before he went on to tear his ligament.. it's not like he would've had any tough, insurmountable competition, even on senior level.

plus there's no remarkable german striker of sorts - besides kevin volland, who's not an actual central forward.
davie selke, bremen's striker "sensation" of late, is the only one coming close to that definition.

another question: why hasn't wenger loaned out serge gnabry while he does not intend to give him any actual game time? so useless. i don't get it, but hey, what do i know. the kid may just need to get a row of competitive matches.

Big win for Leverkusen, if Gladbach can get a point today I think Shalke will struggle to haul either of them back to get the top 4 spot.

Götze and Mustafi could go to the tournament, too. It is more a U23-tournament...

But winning tournaments is not only about the strength of the players. Team chemistry, the right mentality are a big factor in it, too.

The German U19s (with this players) did not get to the last four tournaments...

He played for Germany at youth level but afaik he has some senior games for Bosnia by now.. However I don't rate him as highly as you do, I think he's a defender first of all and lacks the necessary skill on the ball to be a top modern LB.

Strikers are overrated. We'll just roll with Klose upfront anyway If everyone else fails we still have Müller for the senior team, who comes close enough imo.

Because sadly that's what English teams do. I never understood why so many youngsters allowed themselves to be poached by English clubs, just to rot in that terrible reserve league when their chances of first team football are just so much better in Germany.

German pundits are drawing parallels to the U21 team which won the EM final in 2009 4-0:
(Match was against, umm, Engerland, and some comiacal goalkeeping is also to be witnessed...)

Neuer Beck J. Boateng Höwedes Boenisch Hummels F. Johnson Castro Khedira Özil Wagner

Some of those, you'll have noticed, went on to win another final a couple of years later.

Actually just watched this again the other day. Özil was incredible in that game. Also Wagner actually sucked (/was his usual self) till late in the game.

Bayern line up: Neuer - Alonso, Lewandowski, Robben, Rafinha, Boateng, Bernat, Götze, Alaba, Badstuber, Schweinsteiger

Schweinsteiger & Alonso start together again, even though it hasn't worked at all so far :( . It drives me nuts. Hopefully the 2 weeks of rest for Alonso actually helped him, so that he can perform well again.

Substitutes: Reina - Dante, Thiago, Rode, Lahm, Müller, Weiser

Gladbach line up: Sommer - Jantschke, Stranzl, Dominguez, Wendt - Kramer, Xhaka, Herrmann, Johnson - Raffael, Hahn

Mainz 1 Wolfsburg 1. Mainz deserved a better result

Bayern with Schweinsteiger and Alonso against Gladbach. I don't like this.

Made a promise to myself to watch more Bayern for the remainder of the season. Any idea what the formation is going to be for this game?

Looks like a 433ish thing with Götze on the left and Alaba - Alonso - Schweinsteiger in midfield. It could change complete within 5 minutes though.

The dreaded Alonso-Basty is back.......they best not f this up. Final game in an accy -_-

Thanks. Lot of intricate build up play here.. but no gilt edged chance created as of yet. Considering how high that defensive line is, Borussia really haven't had a sniff thus far on the counter, the game is all being played in their half.

I find it slightly odd that Alaba plays on the right and Schweinsteiger on the left in our midfield three.

It's great to see how well Boateng and Badstuber play together, they look like a fantastic and complementary centerback partnership. Feel a bit sorry for Benatia though, I can't even say if he's bad or not, he barely plays.

And the feck, Robben again off injured. That's the 2nd time in recent weeks. Hope it's again nothing serious.

Horrible blunder by Neuer. God damnit...

The next horrible game with Alonso + Schweinsteiger... it just does not work.

Hilarious goal but feck, that was like their one and only attack thus far. Bayern 0-1 BMG

Neuer clearly loves to make mistakes against Gladbach. Still annoyed, that no one was tracking Raffael. We basically play with 3 defensive midfielders and no one in sight. Alonso strolling around 5m away from Raffael, doing feck all . I've no clue how Alonso went from being our best player in the first 3-4 months to our worst, by far our worst, since the winterbreak.

Completely forgot about him. Has he even played since being sent off against Man City?
He played a few games when Boateng was suspended in February. Think he started 5 or 6 games since the City game, but mostly against weak opponents. It looks like Boateng - Badstuber is the prefered pair at the moment and if Javi Martinez returns it won't get easier for Benatia to find a place in the team.

It's really bothering me that Guardiola doesn't select based on form at all in Alonso's case. Any other player would've been long gone from the starting XI.

It's really bothering me that Guardiola can't see that every single game in which Schweini and Alonso started together was a fecking bore. We play possession football with a defensive formation and not enough creativity in the final third to break down deep sitting defenses. And we do it against a brilliantly organised side like Gladbach. It's driving me nuts.

Alonso isn't playing great anyway, but it gets much worse when him and Schweini constantly get into each others way or one of them is pushed into a position that doesn't suit him in this style of football.

That was the kind of game you're both happy and annoyed about. A draw against a strong opponent and an excellent performance to boot, especially in the first half. We should have been two or three goals up and left Wolfsburg with too much to do in the second half.

And I'll say it once more: Geis, what a player! He is simply amazing, should have had another goal with his freekicks today.

Would be worthwhile to look for the GD we had in games with Schweini + Alonso and games with only one of them since the winterbreak. I'll have a look after the match.

Is Gladbach's lead deserved? Just caught the last few minutes of the first half.

Well no. It was their only shot and basically only attack in the first half. Bayern wouldn't have deserved a goal either, though. Dreadfully boring game.

Robben got injured as well...

From a neutral's perspective, that was very flat. The lack of penetration was very evident. Lots of side to side passing, good ball retention but it wasn't going anywhere.

@ctp not deserved at all but Bayern don't deserve the lead here either.

Both together:

1-4 loss Wolfsburg
1-1 draw Schalke
2-0 win Stuttgart
0-0 draw Donetsk
2-0 win Braunschweig

at halftime today: 1-0 loss

Only one of them starts:

8-0 win Hamburg
6-0 win Paderborn
4-1 win Cologne
3-1 win Hannover
7-0 win Donetsk
4-0 win Bremen

How can Pep be so fecking blind...
I don't get it, not at all. Our worst game with only one of them was signficantly better than our best game with both together. It's really that obvious. And because Alonso is clearly signficantly weaker at the moment, it's Schweinsteiger who has to start and Alonso from time to time get a game through rotation.

We can't even sub an attacking player in, Ribery and Robben are injured. Thiago probably not fit enough to play. I would love to see Rode come in and add some energy in midfield, while Schweinsteiger drops into Alonso's position, who should have been subbed off at halftime anyway.

Alonso off, fecking finally. We might get to see 30 minutes of football after all.
