Didn't they make something like $800 million in sales on it's first day. They had two weeks to get their shit together.
Read a report on BBC about it. They didn't expect the demand for the game and have frantically buying up servers to try and service the demand. It's their largest ever online attempt and they've overestimated it.
I was stuck on the waiting for the first race screen for 3 minutes or so in game, so I just shut it off. Will probably be okay by the weekend when I can really start playing it anyways.

Still can't get into first race. I do like the emblem on the shirt though. Made a new character with red shirt, but not sure if it saved as PS3 crashed when it failed to load job/activity (i.e. the race).
Just turned PS3 back on and my character has been lost. Argh. Will leave GTA Online for tonight and try again tomorrow but doubt it'll improve.

Yup, really annoying. Wish you could filter out GTA style races instead of them just turning into deathmatches on vehicles.
All seems very well structured even at this early stage.

So have people been able to get on this now?
Myself and a few others it seems. There's no magic reason but I found that setting up your character and then going via the character select wheel in offline mode (your character can be selected by selecting down) seems to work better.
It almost seemed that by playing the normal gameplay, I had allowed online to prepare itself and by time I chose my character, it was pretty seamless.
A good thing to note it that once on there it runs perfectly- no lag, no drop in graphics. Once all these teething problems are sorted R* will have a monster on their hands!
