Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

I don't believe trade deals will be discussed seriously while uk remains a member. Do you?

The EU will discuss about it with its members and the UK won't be allowed to be in the room at that time but when it comes to actual negotiations with the UK, if I'm not mistaken the EU's schedule put the trade deals at the end of the queue which makes it difficult to happen within two years.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken the EU already have a clear idea of the trade deals they are going to offer/propose, since Barnier and his team already discussed with the 27 members.

but I thought the EU will starve without access to the UK markets.

The key here is that, the EU or the UK can ask for more time, so it's perfectly possible to see the two years turn into three, if all parts think that it's good for them. The 27 have to be unanimously behind it though.

Your bitterness never ceases to amaze me. Wait and see what happens when uk is a tax haven like malta.

Bitterness? Unlike you, i work and pay my taxes here. Both my grandfathers served in the british army and one died on duty. I assure you id say the same if my country come out with similar ridiculous statements.

Malta has a similar economy to the uk and its nowhere near to Guernsey

So you pay taxes in the uk, does that give you special rights to make snidey comments every other post about the former british empire and world wars? You come across as if you dont even like it there?

I wouldn't blame him at all, Britain has apparently turned into a shitty place to live recently.

Speaking in Jordan, with which the UK currently enjoys a free trade deal, through the European Union, Mrs May also said it was a priority to "continue" such deals, for example with Korea.

She said: "No, it will be possible to continue trade arrangements with countries that we have previously had them with through the EU when we are outside."

However, the EU Council document released last week seemed to rule that out.

Good to see Mrs May has saved some extra disappointment for further down the line, it'd be a shame to waste it all in the first week.

Actually it shows that I care and I am worried about this country's future. Also it shows that I know a thing or two about history. But there again, we all know that the leaver's snowflake generation can't take criticism. They walk out from committees because they feel that it was too baised against Brexit, they accuse the BBC for being baised and even threaten Spain for war. They can't bother checking the facts and they are confident that they can cherry pick a deal because the entire world needs them. If things get too tough, well, they move elsewhere, probably in Europe while avoiding the mess they created. I am referring to cowards like Farage, not you of course.

The UK cannot become a tax haven. Not if it wants to use the WTO trade framework.

The WTO has rules, and one of which is that they do not like tax havens, and refuse to deal with them.

May either knew this and lied that she could turn us into a tax haven and still use WTO rules, or is mindbogglingly ill informed.

How is that news? It takes 2 years to leave then you discuss trade.

Either we're leaving on WTO terms, or we're (to all intents and purposes) staying in the EU for way longer than 2 years. Either way, that's big news.

Btw how is Farage a coward?
If anything, based on what he's done and how he's 'always in everyone's face' he's the opposite of one!

Utterly buzzing re Brexit!!

You mean like that time he did an interview where he whined about how terribly scared he is, and how he lives in fear walking the streets? Or perhaps that he's played a considerable role in fecking the country up and now says that if it goes completely to the dogs he'll just run away to America?

Such leadership, such bravery..

Well he was the first one in the German embassy following Brexit and he already said that if shit hits fan he'll leave the UK.

Evidence of ancient 'geological Brexit' revealed

The UK has now started the formal process of leaving the EU, but scientists say they have evidence of a much earlier "Brexit".

They have worked out how a thin strip of land that once connected ancient Britain to Europe was destroyed.

The researchers believe a large lake overflowed 450,000 years ago, damaging the land link, then a later flood fully opened the Dover Strait.

The scars of these events can be found on the seabed of the English Channel.

The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

Professor Sanjeev Gupta, who led the study, from Imperial College London, said: "This was really one of the defining events for north west Europe - and certainly the defining event in Britain's history.

"This chance geological event, if it hadn't happened, would have meant Britain was always connected to the continent."

More than half a million years ago, in the midst of an Ice Age, a land bridge connected Dover in the South of England to Calais in northern France.

Immediately to the north of it, was a huge glacial lake, which had formed at the edge of an ice sheet that covered much of Europe.

The researchers believe that this lake started to overflow, sending vast amounts of water crashing over the land bridge.

The evidence for this was found at the bottom of the English Channel.

Decades ago, engineers who were surveying the seabed for the Channel Tunnel, discovered a series of mysterious large underwater holes.

Now further scrutiny has revealed that they were most likely caused by the lake overspill.

Prof Gupta said: "These holes are now in-filled with sediment, but what's interesting is that they are not linear features like canyons or valleys - they are isolated depressions.

"And they occur in a line - a whole series of them stretching between Dover and Calais. And they are huge, 100m-deep carved into the bedrock and hundreds of metres to several kilometres in diameter.

"So we interpret these as giant plunge pools. We think there was basically lake water plunging over this rock ridge in the Dover Strait through a whole series of waterfalls, which then eroded and carved out these depressions.

"It's difficult to explain them by any other mechanism."

The researchers believe the lake started to overflow about 450,000 years ago, which would have seriously weakened the land bridge.

But they think a second catastrophic flood that took place about 150,000 years ago would have destroyed it altogether.

"We see this huge valley carved through the strait, about eight to 10km wide... and it has a lot of features that are suggestive of flood erosion," said Prof Gupta.

Co-author Jenny Collier, also from Imperial College London, said it was not clear what caused either of these events.

She said: "Perhaps part of the ice sheet broke off, collapsing into the lake, causing a surge that carved a path for the water to cascade off the chalk ridge.

"In terms of the catastrophic failure of the ridge, maybe an earth tremor, which is still characteristic of this region today, further weakened the ridge.

"This may have caused the chalk ridge to collapse, releasing the megaflood that we have found evidence for in our studies."

The researchers would now like to work out more precise timings of the "geological Brexit".

This would mean drilling into the bottom of the Dover Strait and analysing the age of the sediment.

"But that would be a huge undertaking," admitted Prof Gupta.

"The English Channel is the world's busiest shipping lane and it has huge tidal currents. It will be hugely challenging."

The day he bothered turning up to work he ends up insulting the same people who will be responsible in giving the UK a good deal. Smart
And he's not larfin' now, is he ? Make a moral protest Nigel, refuse your MEP salary and pension.

I can't understand these Brexiters. They keep telling Europe that if the UK isn't able to cherry pick deal then it will be them who'll end up suffering and yet, they keep moaning and groaning about getting the deal they want. Since when the likes of Farage are so pro Europe and EU? Id say the UK should be bold enough to cut all ties with its major export market and teach these pesky Europeans what it means living without the UK.

Productivity is a long established problem. Are you trying to score points here? Do you know how badly France's economy has performed in the past five years compared to the UK or that the unemployment rate is double over there?

I haven't made any comment but if the UK is to become self-sufficient then they'd better step up their production. Surprising that the Uk are doing so well they want to leave behind their biggest market or at least make make it more difficult to trade.

Perhaps they don't consider zero hour bullshit employment contracts to be actual employment?

i guess if the people of the world collectively agreed not to sign a zero hour contract then they would not exist. We needed a contractor for IT in our German office and we got 0 applicants

Can you have several zero hours contracts?

There are 900k UK workers on zero hours contracts and surveys found that 70% of workers on them are happy with their hours whilst being more likely to be happy with their work life balance than other staff.

That was based on a survey of just 456 zero-hours workers. It also said that 15% of people on zero-hours contracts want another job compared to 5% of people on normal contracts.

Here's a few interesting comments from the people who conducted it..

The CIPD added many employers and zero-hours staff were unaware of the employment rights they may be entitled to.

40% of workers subject to the contracts said they had shifts cancelled without notice

If you depend on that job to pay your rent/morgage, then you're living in permanent uncertainty. If you're not then presumably that's much more manageable. Not only would I like to see a survey done with the normally acceptable number of polling recipients, but also one that broke down a lot deeper into the lifestyles of the people being polled. A youngster still living at home is likely to give you extremely different responses to a parent for instance.

I guess you could, I know someone that has a perm contract and a zero one for extra cash if she's needed.

Thanks, in theory it looks like something that could be a good idea but I suspect that a lot managers abuse their flaws.
