Brexited | the worst threads live the longest

Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

A 10-page briefing document outlining the new immigration policy states:

• UK borders will be closed to non-skilled workers – and all migrants will have to speak English.

• Anyone wanting to come to the UK to work must have a job offer with a salary threshold of £25,600 – though a salary “floor” of £20,480 will be acceptable in special cases where there might have a skills shortage skills, such as in nursing.

• There will be no route for self-employed people coming into the UK, spelling the end of, for example, Polish plumbers or Romanian builders arriving without a job.

• Border control will no longer accept ID cards from countries such as France and Italy. This, it is understood, is an attempt to clamp down on non-EU workers beating the system with forged or stolen ID cards.

• The skills threshold for foreign nationals wanting to work in the UK will be lowered from degree level to A-levels or their equivalent. The cap on the numbers of skilled workers is being scrapped – and a small number of highly skilled workers will be allowed to come in without a job.

If the UK don't accept ID cards in the future, apart from all the other industries they'll be killing off, tourism is also going to suffer - free ID cards vs costly passports for the whole family - maybe give the UK a miss, eh?

Do they think that forged and stolen passports aren't a thing? If that's the reason then they may want to rethink it.

Would Welsh/Scots do?

Probably not, next stage will be to dismantle bi-lingual signs you find in Wales and Scotland.

Now if the EU could stop brexiteers entering EU territory if they can't speak the local lingo we could banish them having full english breakfasts on their package holiday to the Costa del Sol.

You do realise these proposals aren't for holidays?

It was a joke. However, does Farage accept tourists or even UK legal immigrant residents can speak in their own language on buses and trains and that he is not entitled to listen in to their conversations.
There are plenty of UK workers in the EU and in many other countries who cannot speak the language of the country where they are living.

I’m a remainer. But requiring those who seek to work in the UK to be able to speak basic English is not a horrible idea. The passing grade for that test is so low. It’s easier than the driving theory test, as an example.

It’s also a net good for society. Joining a country is great. I’ve done it three times. If you can’t speak the language you go to an area where others don’t. That area grows because people are lazy. Having a basic grasp of the native language is essential. Not just desirable. It frees you to live anywhere in that country.

Any announcement on spouces visas?
Presumably if somebody from the UK wishes to marry somebody from the EU they again need to match all these criteria to come to the UK and live / work with their partner?

I agree that people should try to integrate as much as possible and try to speak the language but people's language skills would improve having lived in the country.
Would a British builder be able take a job in Dubai for example but would only be accepted if they can speak arabic?

I know plenty of British people living and working in France who can barely string a sentence together in French.

Just for clarification and then comparison....

What are the immigration criteria / processes which the EU applies to non-EU citizens who wish to move into and then live and work inside the EU ??

Always seems to be lots of Turks in Germany ; Sth Americans in Spain ; Angolans in Portugal ; Nth Africans here in France, etc....

Or is this criteria set on an individual country-by-country basis ?

Not being provocative - I really have no idea....

Migrants must speak English? Well if that gets reciprocated by the EU countries then I’m fecked.
It would be hard to reciprocate because English is virtually the lingua franca in the EU. I imagine people will find ways around the language requirements if they're not too strict about checking.

In France it’s already a requirement for permanent residence or citizenship so I imagine they could extend that to all working visas fairly easily if they chose.

Each individual country have their own rules(despite Brexit lies and bollox) . In France for example you need a basic understanding of French to become a French citizen but not to live or work here.

Also which is even more ridiculous, why would a company employ someone if they needed to speak the local language and couldn't. Brexiters didn't think it through.

The English Language test is pretty easy. If Dubai wanted to instigate that policy, sure. Thing is that they need labour more than they need Arabic speaking labour.

It’s not really that contentious.

I believe individual EU countries are free to determine their own policy with regard to non-EU migrants, evidenced by the clear link to the colonial past we can see in your examples (I’d add South Asians in the UK). One partial exception would be for Turks, who have their own special arrangement under the terms of the 1963 Ankara agreement, but who tend to gravitate to Germany and Austria for historical reasons.

Belgian :) - or French or Flemish. Do they have a visa to work in the EU? Do they qualify to work in the EU if they don't speak the local language. Ridiculous isn't it.

The whole thing is already rediculous and it will become increasingly so.
Much is simply posturing but I do think that the government's large majority is embolding them to be even more Brexit single minded.

And if it all goes badly, they will fall back on the 'this is what the country voted for' mantra.

I don't think you need to be that fluent in English to be a builder, machine operator or a fruit-picker in the UK either. That's my point. It's just to satisfy the xenophobes and people who don't like hearing foreign voices.

I found it highly amusing when I lived in the UK to speak in french walking round the supermarket with my wife and hear some prat say something about foreigners and having the shock of their life when I shouted at them in a cockney accent. Evil swine that I am.

oohhh...I'm definitely doing that once I'm fluent in Italian.

Not really, because as labour shortages in McDonalds and fruit picking, etc. become a reality, a few things might happen;

* Defined now as areas of labour shortage these job/vacancies get a boost from the points system under identified labour shortages section;
*NVQ's in Burger tossing and picking fruit become available at Level 2, also boost points for job holders under requisite Qualifications section
*McDonalds and Fruit growers will up grade their automation production methods, requiring less staff and the savings used to raise the salary levels of those remaining to meet or even rise above the salary caps section.

Win-win situation; labour shortages targeted, improved skill levels in the respective industries raised, productivity (via automation) improved, better paid if less jobs required, immigration figures reduced!

I can see you live in cloud cuckoo land.
There’s a reason many fruit are picked with hand and fruit is also seasonal. It’s also a massive & important industry.
Apart from being SciFi. a fully automated McDonalds franchise would be ridiculously expensive.
And if we’re going to allow unskilled labour through the back door anyway by manipulating the points system, then why have points system in the first place?
If we stop unskilled labour from coming to the UK then there will be higher prices & shortages. Enjoy!!

You're possibly correct, but if so then why -

I shouldn't imagine its purpose is to keep EU citizens inside the EU in much the same way that the Communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe did for decades.

So if you don't speak english you can't work in UK? or it depends on your wallet? would love to see apply that to foreign footballers...sure will happen

Basically because the US & UK keep bombing places and the people who lived there make their way to Europe. (Alright, not exclusively US and UK, but a large proportion).

Seeing too many stories like this. Very sad to see that they feel the U.K. is no longer their home because of the racists and xenophobes who voted for Brexit.
