It's not necessarily just slanted reporting, Smores, because even the Beeb have done it. It's also partially because sites like Buzzfeed have changed the way news in mainstream media is presented; with click-bait headlines that are meant to draw people in. However people don't always click the article (myself included) and merely read the salacious baiting headlines and then presume they know the full story and/or quotes.
Just yesterday a man I work with who voted Brexit saw the headline and asked if I had seen it and then he asked me if these are the people I really want to be working with, I explained that the full quote is talking about the people who promoted the idea of Brexit without having any idea how to implement it safely. This is from a clever and informed individual as well, not one of the louts who accept anything negative about the EU because it suits their world view.
