What’s crazy is I don’t even think we’re playing to Amad’s strengths that much either — the open space he gets at wingback is great but he’s genuinely always taking the fullback (and his supporting marker) on in a 2v1 isolation. No overlaps. But somehow he just excels and gets past most times

We don't have many players who can do that pass.
Yeah but to be fair one of them is Bruno and he tries it all the time. The opportunity is there.

Hojlund will try for it but CBs are always all over him because he's not running from a deeper position and he's not crafty enough to disguise the movement. Garnacho far too often just stands watching and doesn't make the run.

Rashford vs Leipzig came to my mind. In League I don't remember.
Ronaldo vs. Norwich. April 2022.

Edit: That was actually our third league hattrick that season after Fernandes vs. Leeds on the opening day, and Ronaldo vs. Spurs just a few weeks prior to Norwich.

Of all of the clown antics that went on with ten Hag, the way he treated a clearly talented Amad was right up there with "Washie will play until he scores".

Meanwhile in Italy, Forson has played a total of 57 minutes in Serie A for Monza and scored 0 goals.

Love how he carries the ball and challenges defenders. It's not particularly flashy, but he has such close control and can go both ways that the defenders just back off. He gets to do that more from the wing-back position.

Yh this is my 'worry' albeit it's minimal. The goal which opened the floodgates was bloody lucky, they were in a good defensive position and had him well covered but his shot perfectly rebounded to him as though he'd played a one two. Then we get our backs up and Eriksen makes some magic but until we get an RWB who has the energy/pace to go around him and then drag one of the markers out, we need to support him a lot better because our only real goal threat right now.

Exactly.
He won the game for us as a wide player, winger or as a rwb. Its where he's most effective.

Agreed. Was worried about the defensive responsibility to play at wingback but he is so dangerous when he has the ball by the touchline and that is taken away if we shift him infield to play as a 10.

So Ole knew what he is doing after all..
It is incredible to think we had Amad all along and yet paid 90M Euros for Antony and still Amad had to wait 2.5 years to get a decent opportunity

You shouldn't give credit where its not deserved or earned.

I wonder what his ceiling is as a player, aged, say, 27/28.

I'm tired of watching us be too cautious . Either bring in a wingback that can offer us what Amad can in that area or continue to perserver with Amad in that role, which he's been amazing in, and bring in a number 10.
I no longer give a flying feck in being concerned what the opposition can do to us. Let them worry about what we can do to them and , long term, that's exactly what Ruben wants from United.
Rafael and Evra were hardly defensive beasts but Saf knew he had players capable of hurting the opposition in attack.

We've been far too concerned in the opposition post SAF.

Couldn’t understand why people were saying he had a poor game before the goals. I thought he was our most dangerous player the entire time.
I think he did have a quiet period (I want to say from about the 40th-70th minutes), but otherwise I agree. While he didn't get the ball in attacking areas as much as we might like, he still did well when he did and also helped us get out of deeper areas either through carrying the ball himself or by drawing Southampton players and then passing to a more free man inside.

I kept thinking Amad was the same age as Antony 23/24 didn't realise he is only 22 because I keep hearing we shouldn't expect anything from 21/22 year olds for certain players.

I thought he was poor the majority of the game, made a few wrongful decisions I was screaming at the tv for him to pass at times when he could have played players in who were in better positions and overplaying doing solo runs, but you can't question his quality. The second goal was pure class and Erikson chip through ball reminded me of the kind of ball Scholes would reguarly play in, but I think Amad is the only guy we have in our attack capable of making that 1-2 pass connection run and compose themselves to finish like that

It's exciting because he is still quite young that we don't even know how much better he can become and if he can keep levelling up to reach new levels. The cherry on top is that he's not the character to let this kind of form get to his head

just popped onto this forum to mention that never, in the 60 years that i have watched and supported Sunderland football club, did a player become so beloved in one single season as Amad did. That is despite him being only on loan from your club for that time. It was his attitude as much as his great performances that made him win people over so quickly.

If we somehow claw our way back into the premier league he is guaranteed a fabulous welcome when he returns to the Stadium of light.

I do have to wonder, mind, why your club would spend so much on Anthony and at the same time send Amad out on loan. Glad you did though.

Said it two years ago when first watching him. This lad is going to be a world beater. Talent And attitude. That's rare these days.

All the best.

Yeah I remember probably two or 3 chances he created throughout the game as well as in general looking one of the only competent players that first 50 or so minutes

After being influential from the right.
Of course but after the first goal, Amad switched with Antony and was the right sided attacker. You want your most dangerous players in the most dangerous areas of the pitch, the problem is that he's also our best RWB by an absolute mile and without him playing there, we struggle to build play. I don't mind him rotating between RWB and the 10 position this season but we need to be building towards Amad being a full time forward.

Wish we'd sign Dibling. Him and Amad doing rotations at those right sided positions during the game would be fecking lethal between the two of them.
