Was daft of them to boast when, at the time they boasted it'd have been the time the servers were least active with the Americans in bed and Europeans in school/work.

I wouldn't be surprised. After you left it went from saying couldn't save progress as not connected to Rockstar game services, to being fine and saving automatically again.
