Probably the second option, Jose clearly isn't a fan of Mata and Lingard currently lacks the requisite quality to be a starter if Jose has trophy ambitions.

Fee is good, I think he's more likely to operate from the right wing most of the time though because Rooney isn't ready to be part of a deeper two-man midfield IMO - even with Schneiderlin as the partner.
I'm still expecting the sale of Mata and one of Fellaini/Herrera which would turn this deal into more a of swap + cash (not meaning any of these players go to Dortmund, just looking at it in a purely monetary fashion).
If no high profile CM is signed, the starting front six will likely be Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger/Carrick, Rooney, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Ibrahimovic.
It relies a lot on dictating the game as we have usually done against most teams under LvG, but hopefully the pace of the wide forwards gives us that penetration we needed badly. If we struggle still, Herrera and Rashford on the bench for some fresh legs will always be great options.
This is a great transfer as while I think Mane is a good signing for Liverpool, getting this guy for £8m less is far better.

I don't think we had a particularly bad team last season. Wouldn't be surprised if we do get a couple more decent signings in, but if we don't and we're left with that squad I'd be confident that Mourinho can do some damage with it. We've got pretty good depth now, too.

He's played most of his games last season as a Right Winger / Right Forward where he has racked up absolutely insane statistics (20+ goals , 35+ Assists)
Right Wing is his IMO, and Mata (if he stays) becomes a backup to both the RW and CAM position.
Cause contrary to popular opinion the main reason players leave Dortmund is not to win trophies, but cause Dortmund is not willing to pay the biggest wages.
Replace Darmian, Smalling and Schneiderlin and we would really mean business. I know it ain't going to happen though so we'll just have to see how the squad shape up.
