For me, he is basically Kevin De Bruyne - striking similarities between them as players. Like De Bruyne, he has that intelligence where he creates lots of genuine chances per game. At the moment, Mkh, De Bruyne and Payet are the best at that I think. They create 3 or 4 proper scoring chances per game.

With Ibra at the end of them

£26m for a player with 1 year left on his contract is a lot. That's undeniable. Wanyama was in a similar position and went to Saints PL rivals Spurs for a bargain £11m

If another club "kidnapping" him means paying £26m for him, then I highly doubt it. United probably could've dragged it out and got the price lowered or made a deal with the player/agent to sign next year for free with a bigger signing on fee to compensate

Credit to United though, they didn't play those games and just got it done. I don't even care how much United pay for players, it's not my money, but it doesn't change that £26m for a player with a year left of his contract is a lot
You're not seriously comparing the Wanyama transfer to the Mkhitaryan one, are you?

Are you forgetting that Mkhitaryan is 20x the player wanyama is?

We paid £18 million for Ashley young with one year left...

That's without taking into account the united factor or inflation.

Surely if the DDG saga thought us anything it's that waiting a year to get your player is very risky. A lot can happen in that space of time. I can see why people think paying all that money when we could get him in a year is a bit nonsensical but at the same time, you're paying for the security of actually getting the player as opposed to taking the risk.

Other clubs were circling this summer, let alone in January/next summer when he'd be on a free. Paying up now was the smart and sensible thing to do. Not sure exactly what people would've wanted us to do for a right midfielder next season if we'd delayed this deal.

I'm properly excited about this transfer. Henrikh, on paper, seems to be exactly what our midfield has been missing for so many years. Really hoping this one is confirmed soon.

Wait. So whats going to happen with Herrera?

Targaryan is most likely bought to be on the right side of the front 3 behind Zlatan. Herrera is in competion for the centre spot of that front 3, or one of the CM slots.

I read an article about him in 2013 before a move to Dortmund on a German website. I didnt know practically anything before that about him. Found some parts interesting and looked it up again, so i translated it fast to English. There an Ukrainian journalist answers some questions about Mkhitaryan and Eastern European football in general.

What is Mkhitaryan's standing in Armenia? Gets he celebrated as Armenia's best player of all time?

Alexander Sereda: There have been other outstanding Armenian footballers, like Nikita Simonyan, who won the tilte with glaring outsider Ararat Yerevan in USSR 1973. But for the present time, it is hard to find another Armenian player, who has achieved as much, especially internationally. He is actually worshiped as national hero, as a cult figure. He has a large fan base, both in Armenia as well as in Ukraine. If there is a poll on the website of Shakhtar, who was the best player in this or that category, then almost always Mkhitaryan wins.

According to a media report Dortmund should have offered 23 million euros for Mkhitaryan, but Donetsk want 30m. Do you think he's worth that much? Especially when you consider that a player like Mario Götze has transferred for "only" seven million more?

Sereda: Schachtjors boss Sergei Palkin has indeed confirmed that there was an offer on the part of BVB, by the way the only offical offer for Mkhitaryan. This week now will tell if Dortmund will pay the asking price. Götze is a seasoned European player from one of the best leagues, which he has already proved in the Champions League. You cannot compare the Ukranian league with the Bundesliga. Here is a huge decline in quality. Shakhtar is so much better than all other clubs; sporting, infrastructural, financial and in terms of the professionalism of the management. If you look at Mkhitaryans appearances in the Champions League at times, he played well, but his performancea didnt always match his hype, against Dortmund for example. You just have to wait in order to draw accurate conclusions whether he brings what it takes to play consistently at a high level at a European top club. Fact is: Besides Tymoshchuk no former Shakhtar player has achieved great success.

So would you say that it would be a financial risk to spend so much money on Mkhitaryan?

Sereda: Yes. While it would be wrong to say that he is not worth the money, there is some potential risk. The difference between the two leagues is simply enormous. Although, he has established as an attacking midfielder a new scoring record in Ukraine (with 24 goals),one cannot say how successful he would be in the Bundesliga.

How would you describe Mkhitaryan as a person? What is he like privately?

Sereda: He is a very modest and decent boy. Glamour is alien to him. You will not find him in the morning at three o'clock in a nightclub. When he came to Ukraine from Armenia, he lived at the training ground. He has no house and no apartment in Donetsk. As far as I know he has no girlfriend. The only thing that currently interests him is football. He is very professional. This is also what coach Mircea Lucescu always stressed when he talks about him. A professional through and through. No doubt, every coach likes players with these characteristics.

What kind of player is Mkhitaryan? Is he a classic playmaker or more of a winger? And can you compare him with Mario Götze?

Sereda: He is not a classical playmaker. This season he played centrally behind the center forward. He likes to move into the penalty box and to score goals. He is very, very versatile. When he came to Shakhtar, Fernandinho had just been injured and he has played as a number 6 in the 4-2-3-1. He likes to win duels, win the ball back, and initiate attacks. Under Lucescu he has never played on the wing, only centrally.

So a quite suitable player for someone like Jürgen Klopp, who in the forward line likes to rotate at times?

Sereda: Definitely! I think his best position is just behind the striker. This season he has blossomed there. If Robert Lewandowski will remain at BVB and Mkhitaryan comes, he should play there.

Apparently he turned down the offers from Tottenham and Liverpool because he wants a move to Dortmund.

Sereda: You know, most of these stories are just rumours. There is such a big hype about him, that it is hard to judge which stories are true and which are scattered from his agents. It was already said that his transfer was a done deal, although Liverpool has not even made an official offer.

What is the view of the the Bundesliga in Ukraine?

Sereda: The Bundesliga is very well regarded, especially after the Champions League final (Bayern vs. BvB). But I do not think that's somewhere else any different. It is very prestigious to play there. Of course Anatoliy Tymoshchuck is well known, who has played for Bayern and won the Champions League. And Mkhitaryan would fit much better in Dortmund than for example in Liverpool, because the style of play of Donetsk and the BVB is very similar: aggressive, fast, with a strong pressing. Liverpool plays in comparison more possession football.

Why should Mkhitaryan leave Donetsk anyway? Ultimately he plays in the Chanpions League there and earns good money.

Sereda: Money is not important in my opinion. Shakhtar is a very rich club. He is attracted by a new challenge. He wants to prove himself against top players in a top league. But each transfer has its own story.

For example?

Sereda: Willian has gone to Anzhi, because his wife wanted to live in Moscow. This had nothing to do with money or football. Fernandinho is to Manchester City because he wants to show his abilities and play for the Brazilian national team and in the World Cup. In the Premier League he is naturally constantly in the spotlight. And Mkhitaryan is just looking for a sporting challenge. Just to emphasize: With regard to the financial side, Shakhtar is not reliant on selling players. However, it is not a common practice to keep players who want to go.

2009 moved with Dmytro Chygrynskiy a young Ukrainian player to Barcelona, but he could never establish himself there. Generally one can often observe that players from the Russian/USSR area have problems adapting and establishing themselves in Western Europe.

Sereda: Chygrynskiy failed because the change came too early for him. He was not ready for it, week after week to deliver the required performances at a club like Barcelona. It is true, not many Russian or Ukranian playersplay abroad, but every case is different. Take Arshavin for example or as a counterexample Shevtschenko.

How do you estimate would Mkhitaryan cope with a new environment?

Sereda: I do not see any adjustment problems. He was able to gather experience in France and even in Brazil. In addition to Russian and Armenian, he speaks also English, French and Portuguese.

Does he want to leave the club now immediately, or do you think that he could still hang around one year in Donetsk?

Sereda: I think so, that he wants to leave immediately. One indication is that he has not yet reported to the club after the summer break. Shakhtar was without him at the training camp in Austria. I can imagine that perhaps he is afraid that such a possibility does not come back.

It's completely daft, isn't it? Almost as though this season never happened.

Oh ok. That makes sense. Can see Rooney being the one to lose his place

I know that Jose is a big analytics guy... but it is weird that "plays in yellow" seems to be a key stat for him

One thing is for sure, we will be the talk of the town in Glendale, CA

Quick, get a United shirt sent over to those Kardashians, will do wonders for our popularity in the US..

Good player. I'm happy. I don't expect him to repeat his last season but he should improve the team, nonetheless. Hopefully, that would put an end to the James speculation.

What’s frustrating is the same fans that complain about us apparently paying over the odds for players are the same fans that will complain about the Glazers sucking money out of the club! Some people are never pleased.

And for those saying €38m is too much, Watford want £30m for Troy Deeney! Just to put things into perspective, that’s today’s market.

So do we love or hate Woody atm? it seems to fluctuate :wenger:

He's on good standing after firing LVG, hiring Mourinho and the quick signing of Bailly. I predict his stock will rise should we complete the signings of Mkhitaryan and Zlatan.

So our very own Jesse Lingard will have some bit of compettition for the right side spot. He had a decent 1st year in 1st Team and can only get better through learning from experienced guys like Miki

Properly excited about this,

Also very weird question in the thread poll, €38m is an absolute steal imo. I'd have him here for €60m or more. The guy just comes out of a season where he had a foot in like 50 goals, at the peak of his ability as a player and can play from the right side. This might actually be our best signing in years.

Nice that we seem to have wrapped up this deal now. 32M € also seems like a very fair price for him, even 38M would be okay in my book. That means the right wing should be fixed. On to the next areas that need fixing, like a good right FB and one more class CM please.

Was one of our best players in his first season and last season really only was bad towards the end. Loves the club and gives his all always. So a fair few care

He'll have to knuckle down and show the manager he's worthy of a place - just like anyone else.
