There was an article in the guardian the other day saying that the Mexican football federation is purposely playing domestically based, younger players, in preparation for the 2026 World Cup which will be on home soil for them. And that they don’t really care about results right now. It’s all to build for the future.
The problem is, they really don’t have any good young players coming through, and the ones that are showing promise aren’t good enough to get transferred to the top teams in Europe, so instead they are sought after by middle table teams in Spain, Italy and Germany and the wages on offer are less than what they can make in a top team in Mexico. So they stay in Liga MX, and they just don’t develop beyond what that league pushes them to do. Which isn’t much. The football federation encourages this because they want the best Mexican players to stay in Mexico; but they are killing their own national teams because those players just aren’t developing beyond a certain, very average, level.
Basically, they have laid deep roots for long term mediocrity (at best). Meanwhile, all the best US players head to European academies in their late teens and get the benefit of proper coaching and development. MLS keeps most of the mid level talent, and supplements it with young players from South America and veterans looking for a last pay day, while the top tier players head to Europe. It’s no mistake that only 3 players in the whole US squad for Copa ‘24, play in MLS; and I made a post a few days ago showing that around 80% of their starting line up is either barely American, or has spent virtually their entire career (including youth level) in Europe.
MLS keeps improving with the influx of promising South American talent and the odd aging superstar, with more and more money coming in; but on a NT level, the US has tapped into the power of European expertise, as well as players who only have limited links to US nationality. It’s like they run a scouting program for their National Team.
