Copa America 2024 - Argentina Win

Ted Lasso continues on. Take that ref

Gosh, apart from Davies none of them really inspired any confidence when taking penalties. They were all equally terrible. Canada lucky that Venezuela were just a bit more shit than them. Just about scrape through.

Fantastic by Canada, all credit to the team! They’ve never been this much fun to watch, let’s go boys

Canada, Copa América semifinalists. Now there's a phrase I never thought I'd hear.

Yeah, I'm rubbing my eyes here.

That was an entertaining game, and if I hadn't been so stressed, I would have enjoyed it a lot more than I did. Possibly my favourite game involving Canada since the legendary Iceteca (vs. Mexico in 2022). With Tajon, we'd have won that in normal time.

Genuine commiserations to Venezuela, who helped make this such an enjoyable game.

That’s a great result for Canada. I have to say I’m actually surprised by how good a side they look. They’re a more than decent team. In saying that the quality of some of the penalties in the shootout was shocking.

Don't like a format where you play someone in the groups and then can play them again before the final.

Was a decent game though, really enjoying the tournament so far.

I’d have preferred to see Canada get the winner of Brazil or Uruguay.

Canada actually has a shot at making the finals. The gave Argentina a good game and with better finishing they could have won the match or at the very least tied.

USA’s failure to make it out the groups looking even worse now

The referee was very bad yesterday. There was no penalty, De Paul's arm was stuck in his body, Ecuador's goal should have been ruled offside, the striker interferes with the play and the referee stopped a counter-attack that would have left J. Alvarez free to score. A disastrous performance.

When all the decisions go one way, it gives you something to think about. Lucky for Conmebol that Argentina went through.

He was bad for both sides, the normal thing when it comes to CONMEBOL referees. Enzo Fernández made a penalty in my opinion, they didn’t consider it

Ecuadors goal wasn’t offside in my opinion. And the Alvarez situation wasn’t his fault at all, in fact the Argentinian players and staff told him to stop the play first. Even Scaloni said it was bad luck as he stopped the game a second before Alvarez stole the ball and they were asking him to stop it so it’s not his fault.

Argentina played their worst match since the Scaloni era, Messi didn’t exist, Molina is just awful, Enzo was shockingly terrible, De Paul was bad and left Molina alone most of the time.
The pitch was terrible aswell. It’s a shame having to compete under such circumstances.

The only team than can complicate Argentinas game as Ecuador with their physical output is Uruguay. If we get to the final against either Brazil or Colombia, it will be a comfortable match in that aspect.

Has Messi been a hindrance to the team like his bestie CR7?

He has been in the last match but because he’s injured, or wasn’t 100% recovered. Didn’t touch the ball, or did like 32 times only, which is his lower register since 2011. He still made a great pass to leave Enzo one on one with the keeper.

great match today between Uruguay and Brazil. I would say it’s 80% - 20% for Uruguay since Vinicius is not playing. It’s the worst game they will have and they’ve been clearly worse than Colombia who are not better than Uruguay in my opinion.

It's deliberate so as to predefine big games for the locals and, arguably, easy and hard sides.

Group A/B side delivered Argentina, Canada, Venezuela and Ecuador for knockouts (Mexico expected)

Group C/D side was expected to deliver Uruguay, USA, Brazil and Colombia

The locals (i.e. Mexico and USA) would get some big games drawing crowds and avoid each other. Both cocked it up.

Argentina and Messimania preserved all the way to the final (they won't cock it up).

Uruguay always knew that to win it we had to beat Brazil and Colombia in whatever order and Argentina at the end. Our game with the USA should have been an irrelevant formality to rest and rotate... but Timothy Weah.

Brazil and Colombia probably weren't keen on knocking out the hosts so indifferent about 1-2 as well... then Colombia jammed into a game with Panama and then waiting for the winner of the hard shoulder Brazil/Uruguay-Colombia-Argentina

Canada, Copa América semifinalists. Now there's a phrase I never thought I'd hear.

I can remember hearing they had made the Gold Cup Final in 2000 (and later won it), was in total disbelief.

Craig Forrest was exceptional that Cup run. I don't recall Forrest getting much play at West Ham but for one summer month he was outstanding.

Colombia game started brightly. Panama should have 1 back.

3-0 come on Colombia! Two marvelous assists by James, and one PK. Whenever he puts on Colombia shirt he turns into prime Zidane.

I hope in the second half Lorenzo rests key players, so they be fresher for Uruguay/Brazil.

How's Brazil been this tournament? Any close watchers fancy Uruguay's chances?
Better than they have been on the qualifiers, but more dependent on individualities than on having an stablished game plan. Uruguay for me are slight favorites, but Bielsa is a known bottler.

Been impressed with James so far. Rewinding the years...

Crazy that Messi won the award for best player of the group phase.

Pretty crap. We've continued our tradition of being unable to break down any remotely competent, semi-organized defenses.

Officials got a soft spot for him, he won the best player award in 2014 WC and even he said he didn’t deserve it.

I bet he will win Copa America’s best player award even if he lost the final.

5-0 to the semi final here we go ❤
Congratulations!

Random, I know, but whenever I see you post, I always think of Falcao.

I usually watch a lot of Copa America tournaments because I love watching live football in the middle of the night, but I haven't watched any of this years. Uruguay-Brazil is going to be the first game I watch of this one.

All fair points. Match seems like an absolute gamble.

Damn I wish these games weren’t so late
You're the opposite of me

Yeah, I have no idea what to expect. I'm looking forward to it. Definitely keeping an eye on Ugarte. Saw him a bit for Uruguay's youth teams but this will be the first senior game of his for Uruguay I'll see. He's seemingly developed into a different player than what he was looking like at youth level.

I've only watched him against the US, Considering he's a defensive player I reckon you'll find his agility and basic ball control in tight spaces adequate.
