Should have saved the penalty. Guy makes too many mistakes. Its as simple as that. Doesn't make that many saves that he shouldn't be making and lets in too many he shouldn't. I don't think you win anything of note with this guy between the sticks.

You never criticised ddg for not saving penalties?
People criticised DDG for his penalty save %, not specific penalties. Onana seems decent with penalties, he's guessing the right way often and then his % of saves is good. There was that stat about how DDG saved 3 penalties in 8 years for us - for whatever reason he just really struggled there for us.

Yesterday was one of this best performances in a United shirt imo.

The leg save off the McAllister shot in the first half
Handled the Van Dijk header well
Had the wherewithal to deny Conor Bradley at the near post in the 90th minute.

Each of these could've been goals if mishandled, misjudged etc.

Nearly stopped the pen as well.

A solid all around performance from our keeper

An excessively harsh take. Onana guessed right and appeared to get a glove on the ball but Salah struck it very hard. Not many keepers who have ever lived would have saved that pk.

We'll eventually need to move Onana on to another club as he is prone to too many mistakes, which you are right to point out, but his performance last night -- and as things stand right now this was the performance of the season by the squad -- was nearly flawless.

I don’t understand why we keep getting outmuscled on corners. This isn’t all on Onana, I think he’s doing his part, but we’re not making it any easier for him. The lack of a strong presence on the near post is baffling. It’s like we’ve completely forgotten the basics of defending set pieces.

That kind of presence made such a difference. Yesterday, we saw 2 or 3 dangerous corners, that could have been easily cleared at the near post, one of which Onana barely managed to deflect. It could have been much worse.

This feels like a simple fix. Having someone solid at the near post would stop so many of these issues before they even begin. It’s not complicated—just good, old-fashioned organization. Why we’ve moved away from it is beyond me. I mean, think back to RVP—he was an absolute monster at the near post, clearing corners with ease.

I don’t like him as our keeper at all but I think he did well yesterday and saved what he could.

Of course they would. You can hit the ball as hard as you like. Top keepers save that penalty. Onana himself will have been pissed off at letting that past him.

I'm not questioning his performance overall yesterday. It was more of a comment on his general keeping. He makes too many mistakes. He should have saved the penalty but yes, apart from that he was good.

Peak De Gea's consistency have put me in a situation where I'm expecting all the savable saves to be saved.... but that's not how it works, does it? peak De Gea was a freak. He saved all the savable and on top of that some of the impossible ones.

Man Utd 3:1 Southampton New
Kept them in the game first half.

The goal was total shite.

Solid performance.

The saves were good and kept us in the game, but I was really annoyed he didn't come claim the high ball in the box that led to their corner. That should be bread and butter stuff for him.

I did get annoyed when he didn't claim a ball that De Ligt (I think) headed it super high. But he kept us in it in the first half, so job well done tonight.

Without Onana we go in at half time at least three goals down and there's no late fightback.

Made some excellent saves and kept us in the game.

He makes good save but he's no presence for opposition's corners/crosses. Seems like he shrinks when the ball comes in.

Top performance tonight, needs to keep it up and replicate this Sunday where we'll inevitably concede a lot of chances again

This was absolutely maddening. Deciding not to come for the ball shows indecision and sets a tone of confusion in the backline. Whilst not the first name that needs shipping he is very underwhelming as Man Utd keeper and needs moving on eventually.

Some outstanding saves that kept us in a game we were getting over run in. I dont blame him for the goal, it came deflected off his own player and he still nearly saved it.

Not coming for the ball was bad, but De Ligt's header was dreadful. He got no distance on it and put us in massive danger.

His saves in the first half saved us from an unwinnable game.

I am absolutely not a fan; but today he did nothing wrong and was just as much the reason we won as Amad was.

No kicking or playing out from the back nightmare moments. No problems with crosses, if he had to take one, I don't recall - two great close range saves and won very good down low save.

Well played. Solid.

Come of it.

Onana saved us last night , keeping the ball so much inviting pressure for no reason . Still believe that we need an upgrade for Onana . He’s 15 stones 95kg overweight and not athletic enough for a goalkeeper.

Would have been POTM last night if not for Amad's heroics at the end, he was exellent all night and kept us in tbe game with some great saves.

Sums it up for me too

Refreshing to see someone admit that they arent a fan but still actually giving Onana the credit he deserves. None of the 'he made some good saves/had a decent game but.... -insert any excuse to still call him crap-'

Amad scored a hattrick but Onana was also a big reason that we got three points

I am in this camp and agree he was excellent yesterday. I worry about the brain farts and the tendency to let a bad error impact him for multiple games but he has been mostly on an upward trajectory since those first couple of months.

We need to send Ten Hag one of them rotting fruit baskets every week. We already an inconsistent error prone goalkeeper. We thought we were addressing the instability.
