I don’t understand why we keep getting outmuscled on corners. This isn’t all on Onana, I think he’s doing his part, but we’re not making it any easier for him. The lack of a strong presence on the near post is baffling. It’s like we’ve completely forgotten the basics of defending set pieces.
That kind of presence made such a difference. Yesterday, we saw 2 or 3 dangerous corners, that could have been easily cleared at the near post, one of which Onana barely managed to deflect. It could have been much worse.
This feels like a simple fix. Having someone solid at the near post would stop so many of these issues before they even begin. It’s not complicated—just good, old-fashioned organization. Why we’ve moved away from it is beyond me. I mean, think back to RVP—he was an absolute monster at the near post, clearing corners with ease.
