Hate to be that guy but since I got absolute pelters in here last season...I told you so!

Don’t be that guy. He was absolutely horrendous individually last season, whilst being pretty incredible this season.

It’s possible for him to be bad and then improve!

Felt he came in last season more focused on being a leader at the back than the best gk he could be. Seemed to lose concentration often. This year he's just knuckled down and it's paying off.

He had some shocking performances last season, particularly in the Champions League. However, his poor form was vastly overblown outside of that. In the second half of last season, he was very solid and largely cut out the mistakes. Yet, you'd still come on here, and people were micro-analysing every goal we conceded in the most tedious manner imaginable. I still think a lot of it stemmed from the De Gea fanboys, who couldn't let go of the idea he wasn't a top player anymore. Even last season, Onana was a huge upgrade on De Gea, and he was given precisely zero opportunity to settle into a new team and league by a large portion of fans. I will never understand the reactionary nature of football fans in truth.

He has simply stopped doing mistakes. Without those, he has become a brilliant goalkeeper.

Yup. Noticed the same thing. It was crazy how Onana sorted out his early season wobbles and had a solid second half, only for people to desperately try and pin the blame on him for basically every goal conceded, all season long. This thread was like an extended mass delusion.

The only way for him to turn things round was to do what he’s done this season. Which is reach a level of consistently high performances - at every single element of goalkeeping - that is almost unprecedented for any United goalkeeper ever. And finally he starts to get some credit.

His cross claiming is absolutely elite. So good.
Used to have mini heart attacks over the years whenever a ball was crossed into our box with DDG

I'm sure our defenders were always nervous as well, so much calmer now having a keeper fully in command of his box and always aggressive and proactive towards balls flung his way rather than waiting for the danger to develop before reacting.

Been a night and day difference when it comes to defending set pieces and long balls given Onana being the furthest thing from timid between the sticks.

Yep. This was by far my biggest gripe about DDG. Legend but even in his prime he was so shaky with set pieces and crosses. Was really frustrating to watch other keepers just pluck crosses out the air like it was nothing!

And de Gea was some 2 cm taller than Onana. It doesn’t stop Andre from claiming crosses one bit

Arsenal 2:0 Man Utd New
He was coming out and claiming those corners first half or punching being strong.

Just stopped 2nd half and didnt come off his line wonder why.

Claimed many crosses in the first half. In the second half he for some reason didn’t. Still, his only clear mistake was forgiven by offside in the very beginning, and he was reliable. Did Ok

Been impressed with him lately, but him standing still on his line when he knows how dangerous Arsenal are on corners - and when the ball was so close to the goal on both occasions - is shockingly poor goalkeeping.

That's just nonsense. He got to plenty of corners. Probably more than any defender. But our six yard box was a mess of bodies. He can't teleport himself through them to get to the ball every time. When the corner came in centrally he basically always got a fist to it. He only got done on corners which went near or far post and he couldn't get near (although he did catch a far post corner in the first half)

In the first half alone Onana catched/punched more crosses than DDG used to get to over the whole season :)

The man has been outstanding this season, but it cannot be denied that his performance against Arsenal was suboptimal. These things happen. We match forward onward with a keeper who’s been performing at a very high level this season.

It definitely can be denied. It’s just more of the irrational criticism that this thread is crammed with.

Amigo, Onana’s reaction on both goals was poor. But he’s still had an outstanding season, possibly tops among all PL keepers.

Been superb this season but he’s literally cost us the game there.

Not good enough considering the fee & his performances to date.

He has this in him. I will never forget his form in the champions league. Bang average and extremely overrated passing

why does he have zero competition? He never has to worry about being dropped. The favoritism is nauseating.
