He should be stronger, savvier, and adapt to the league he is in and its own interpretation of the refereeing rules.

Having said that, this is an obvious foul in any other top European league including the CL. PL clubs and England historically have suffered a bit from expecting refereeing in international and European competitions to be similar to what they’re used to in the PL. The gap has closed over time but is still here.

Are you saying that a player jostling with another player can't foul the keeper? There's nothing illegal about what Ugarte is doing and it doesn't mean the player has to go into Onana like that.

It was originally "player stood his ground", once the video comprehensively disproved that it became "player was pushed into the keeper". Unfortunately some people will jump through hoops to assign blame to whoever they want to be at fault.

The real issue here is our defenders just leaving Onana to be swarmed, surely someone is meant to be marking the players who are on the keeper, so that should include getting them off the keeper!

You undermine your own point by trying to rewrite reality in order to further it.

Onana was, unarguably, bumped in the back as he went to jump.
If that “bump” prevents a ball being collected on a set piece in the premier league then we might as well stop playing a goalkeeper.

I question who is to blame for this aspect. In most teams I have watched and when I played it was down to the GK to set up defenders where he wanted them in the 6 yard box and Onana seems not to do this. If you have a senior figure at the back they might organize the corners but we don't really have that either. One of the things that was annoying about ETH and seems to be continuing under Amorim is rotation of defenders from game to game and then exacerbating that by making changes in game too. We really need to settle on a consistent first choice 3 and play them game in and game out barring injury so that we can improve communication and organization in these situations.

I don't think the chopping and changing would be so much of an issue if the training and coaching were working, as it wouldn't just be the main XI that are drilling their marking/positioning etc.

Keep in mind we've been awful with offensive set pieces too, so it isn't just about changing out defenders, we're just disorganised and seemingly easily outwitted at set pieces. It seems to me that we simply aren't spending enough time on them on the training ground.

Liverpool 2:2 Man Utd New
Did ok today but when you dive the right way on that penalty you really have to save it.
Was also very fortunate not to concede that cross at his near post.
Not convinced by him at all.

He looked like he was trying to save it without fully extending to play it safe. Almost like he was worried about where the rebound would go from it. All he needed to do was fully extend and he gets it easy

It was a poor penalty. Not hard, not in the corner, comfortable height.
If you guess right you can’t let that in.

Just see how Allison dealt with corners today and how he deals with crowded box.

He got strong fists on it everytime while Onana struggles somehow for a big strong lad.

Yeah I really miss having a big confident goalkeeper who can deal with crosses. Such a key aspect to goalkeepers since forever, but lost Van Der Sar we seem to have forgotten that

Thought he was good made some important saves.

Back to criticising keepers for not saving penalties.

He was good today, made a couple of decent stops. Still needs to up his game on corners.

Allison dealt with our corners a bit better but then he's got Konate and VVD crowding out the penalty box for him. I actually thought they looked a bit nervous from our corners as Bruno put in some very decent crosses.

Onana's issue is that he and our team lets the opposition get position by simply standing their ground crowding our box. He needs to be more proactive clearing space for himself and his teammates. Too often on his heels but today he was better than previous games.

Spot on!

Why are we the only team in the league getting bullied on corners in this way. Lack of height in the team?

Really need Hojlund, De Ligt, Maguire to do more but that's all we have..

I think it is a good thing. There will always stay people who wrote him off because of his first half year in Europe. Those people will keep looking for reasons to be proven right. If they can only criticise Onana for not stopping a penalty, Onana must be doing something right.

He's guessed right, the shot's not in the corner and he's got full hands to it. He's got to be pushing it away, mate! The best keepers save those. I'm sorry, but they do.

And like you said, he's a nervous wreck on corners too.

I want to like Onana and he does produce some good saves including today but I've come to accept he's maybe a 6/10 goalkeeper. I'd like United to have a 8 or 9/10 keeper.

Didn't he stop like 4 or 5 golden chances for Liverpool? Surprised by some reactions here.

Didn't look like a nervous wreck at corners today. Came and punched a few and caught one.

Regards to the pen, I've seen Cech get both hands to a ball in a CL final and it still go in. Sometimes the power just beats them.

VdS too I felt should have saved a few of Chelsea’s penalties as he got hands to them, but as you say sometimes the power of the strike just wins.

Not golden, but he had a few saves to make today. Did well to spread himself for the MacAlister chance, which was a big save and a couple of other decent saves. Also thought he got out quickly to the early Gakpo chance.

I'd have to watch it back again but I didn't think the penalty was particularly powerful!

I'm not gonna dig him out too much on it though as pens are maybe 10% chance of saving for a keeper.

I still think he needs to be upgraded eventually but he's probably 5th or 6th down the list at the moment.

Never be surprised by the shit he gets in here. There’s a cohort of fans who are completely invested in him being a failure.

Decent game today. Distribution was on point, dealt with crosses well and some good saves. Hopefully over the yips he seems to get after every bad mistake.

Penalty save rate is about 10%, so 9 times out of 10 a keeper dives the other way anyway.

It's also sapping wet and pissing down, in conditions that any keeper anywhere could let even the simplest ball slip. For me, a penalty slipping off his gloves is not really something to be overly critical of.

Maybe on a dry day he keeps that out, even still criticising keepers for not saving penalties will always be weird for me, the odds are totally stacked against them.

Would be a massive help if he could catch a cross now and again.

He's not good enough guys.

We need a keeper to challenge him at least, if not to replace him eventually. He was good today, but needs consistency and improvement on corners

That near post save just seemed so lucky to me. He was totally out of position and if the shot was low or high it was in. I don't know what he was thinking not sticking to his post.
Decent performance otherwise but I just still really don't trust him

I've seen great keepers make a feck up of many a pen man.
True but not a lot that Onana has done convinces me he is great.
I thought he played well overall though the mcallister save was very good.
But then he nearly gets done at his near post and punches a shot that he should be catching above his head straight back into the danger zone. Too erratic for me.

It went straight through his hands.
A better keeper having guessed correctly saves that with relative comfort.
You can tell by how annoyed onana was afterwards that he’d messed up.

I was laughing at the notion that once you dive the right way it should be a guaranteed save. That’s nonsense. And even getting a hand, or two hands, to the ball doesn’t guarantee a save. For any keeper.

Oh come on now.
Look at that again and tell me he shouldn’t have saved it.
Not in the corner, not hit with pace, easy height to save = goal. Not right.

Thought he made more of an effort to impose himself on the corners today. Punched away a couple at least. He got close to the penalty but hard to criticise any keeper for not saving a decently struck pen.

He literally caught one tonight but ok.

I didn't mean in a purely literal sense. Of course he'll catch one now and again.

But on corners alone, when does he help his defenders out and just come and catch the ball? Rare as you like.
