Rewatching extended highlights and he really made 2 big saves, he's been at it this season, and we desperately need him to continue like this until this team settles down

He’s done really well this season. Don’t recall any mistakes at all which for me is the best sign of a solid goalkeeper.

He's got iron wrists. His ability to catch balls hit at speed and his palming of hard shots is quite a sight to watch at times.

See what some confidence can do?
And takes time for some players to settle at a new club. DeGea was poor in his first season and taking into account he was younger than Onana was when he first became United's number 1 and had to manage the pressure as chose replacement of retiring great Edwin van der Sar.

Sounds like Ruben isn't too keen on the long ball distribution so guess we won't see it

He used to look so heavy footed, and now he moves like spiderman. It's hard to believe that caused by "lack of confidence". There must be a change somewhere.

Very few keepers been better this year, if any. Great character as well

Our best player so far this season, Maz right behind him. Amad a shout as well(but didn't get enough playing time from ETH.. the stubborn idiot).

I'm happy for him and us. He backed himself even when we had all given up. People should take this as a case study for another one of our players, also from the Italian league and struggling in his first season. Zirkzee, should be given till the end of next season.

End of next season is going a bit too long if Zirkzee's performances continue at this level. I'd expect to be seeing some improvement towards the end of this season, or at the latest the early part of next season.

All the players that I can think of who started poorly for us but then turned it around started showing some improvement towards the end of their first season before then coming good in the second. Vidic, Evra, Fred, Onana and I think Lindelof as well (can't remember if there were any improvements in his first season or if it just happened right from the start in his second) all followed that path.

So you thought Mazraoui wasn’t good? If so you didn’t watch the game or have an agenda against him.
I’ve grown to expect a good performance from him so anything that isn’t exceptional goes under the radar for me. But yes he was very good.

He is proving a lot of doubters wrong this season, and I will be one of the first to admit I was one of them. Did not see a future for him here after a lot of glaring mistakes from someone who was supposed to be entering/in his peak years as a goalie from his 1st season.

Made a lot of ridiculous saves, much like Dave did over the years, and those have been point-saving moments on quite a few occasions already. He's just above Maz as our best player to date, so kudos to Onana and happy to have him between the sticks for United.

One of the bright sparks of the season.
He’s made half a dozen absolutely incredible saves this season that I’ve enjoyed nearly as much as goals.
At least we don’t have to look for another goalie along with the other needed signings.
Please keep it up, Andre!

I'm not worried about him these days. Seems to have grown into the role. I think the more the team look organised and solid defensively, the better he will look, too.

Did really well again today especially after that ridiculous and completely un-needed backpass that put him in big trouble outside of his box although I feel he could have done better on the 2nd goal.

I bet the haters on this forum won't admit they were wrong.
Guess I'm one of them. I never thought he'd last after last season but fair play to him he's knuckled down and looks to be the part these days. I think he still has the odd clanger in him but hes a far far different proposition than the Andre Onana of 12 months ago. Fair play to him.

2nd goal was somewhat saveable, quite frankly. But rather than that he played very well, including a few sweeper actions under pressure and last minute free kick save

Haha thats amazing! One of my favourites now Onana. I'm really rooting for him to establish himself as a top 3 keeper in the Prem. Been solid with the gloves for a while now but I'm really looking forward to his outfield impact growing. It felt like after he conceded that freak goal last pre season, he really retreated into his shell and stopped coming out of his box.

Absolutely. Should be quite a bit of humble pie going around.

This topic got a lot more reactions when Onana wasnt saving the team every week. Before last season AFCON, Onana wasnt good so many comments about him being shit were made. After AFCON he played well but people didnt trust him because of earlier mistakes so he was still called shit. Now he saves the team every week and its very silent in here.

The moment he makes a mistake this topic will flood over again though. People just hate being proven wrong and look forward to a 'told you so he was shit' moment.

Wonderfull modern keeper and person by the looks of things. I like his stoic way of thinking when asked about problems/situations.

He's having a fantastic season. Glad to see those first 6 months or so last year were just settling in cracks

Confidence can take many forms, and so can its lacks. But have you never tried doing high-level or high-speed (reaction time wise) performances in both higher and lower levels of confidence? The difference can be staggering.
You won't notice with everyone or at the same levels and moments, but at least to me it's hard to imagine there not being a huge difference.
It's unprovable, but sometimes it also hurts to see an exciting introverted lose all those exciting skills after, say, giving away a penalty in their eagerness to help out on their debut/first couple games and then their manager not knowing the least bit about dealing with people. Still remember Cedrick Mabwati from the Atleti youth system. He still managed a decent career relying on pace after a while, but the confidence and the skills before that... but Quique Sanchez Flores and players who aren't his personal favorites... I'm sure he's not an actual bad man, but the way even a legend like Forlan was almost bullied out of his assets game by game. Sure, he made Reyes look like a player I never imagined he could be, but it seemed like almost everyone else felt worse every few months.

Sorry, detour ~

Well, all that about confidence levels in general + having to adapt to a new league with a dysfunctional defense/midfield/squad in front of you? Whether he is good or not it would always be worse than his actual level. I can imagine his first season would be better if Dalot/AWB - Varane/Maguire - Lisandro - Shaw (and Casemiro - Mainoo/Eriksen) were there in front of him on a consistent basis and in good shape.

Not that the team is fixed now, but his own adaptations, starting the season well and some general improvements to the squad (at least directly in front of him) and his confidence levels, both in himself and his colleagues, will make a huge difference. That's all ignoring that players are more than what we see on tv, what they show at their club/to their colleagues, and than they would ever admit, just like everyone else. Whether the accusations were legit or not, I don't think we've been able to see the full capabilities of Antony, at least partly due to not only that playing a part directly, but also the way it affected his overall image, him losing his spot at Brazil (he was often a starter even), now he's also the 100M underperformer, in case that situation is over now (I don't know actually, is it over? Was it resolved somehow? Was it Ronaldo-in-LA'd?)

ughum, another one ~

Plus, hopefully the goalkeeping trainers were and are decent to good, too.

I was completely wrong about him. He has been brilliant
Fair play. It’s not like I was some adamant onana defender either - my belief was shaken to the point I had almost given up on him (he wasn’t anywhere near my top choice to begin with either). But I tried persevering to give him some time to settle in, especially as we became more shite by the day under EtH.

But there was a time here where it felt like he was literally being blamed for every goal we conceded (“should have saved”, “should have done better”) - even though it seemed like there’s literally not much any other goalkeeper could have done. With posters like @Pogue Mahone and a few others trying to defend the GK almost on a daily basis! I’m not sure if it was purely because of his errors or because of the EtH links to his signing (more ammunition for the “outers” as if they needed it) - probably a combination of the two in reality.

But yeah, I’m extremely happy how he’s turned it around into being possibly the top performing GK thus far in the current PL season! Shows a lot of mental strength from Onana as well.

He's arguably the best keeper in the league this year. Top when it comes to preventing goals from shots faced. The stats and the eye test backs this up.

His short to medium range passing continues to be very good, just like his claiming of crosses.

One noticeable change since ETH is that he doesn't ponder on the ball as much, waiting to be pressed. Clearly it was a tactical choice by ETH. Use to drive me nuts when we're a goal down and still doing it.

The one thing I wish would improve, is his launch passes completion rate. We are one of the worse team in the league at this. I put this down to our forwards having shite hold up play.
We basically launch passes like rugby kicks and Nfl punts, long and wide, to gain territory, while minimising the changes of it leading to a transition for the opposition.

He has been our best player this season, and proving me wrong when I thought there is no turning back. Long may it continue and Amorim has one less problem to solve.
