The one that was going wide anyway?
The suggestion was that he couldn't save anything not in the center of the goal. Whether the shot going in/slightly wide/hitting the post isn't really relevant here.

I want to see that City goal later on. De Bruyne's cross looped up off Amad's foot. Where the pace is taken off a cross by a deflection and loops in, that should be an opportunity for the keeper to come out and claim or punch, but Andre seems to be spooked lately and is coming for nothing.
I thought so too live but I watched it again and that spin was brutal, top/sidespun right onto Gvardiol's head. Don't think any keeper could have reacted to it, defenders should have dealt with it better though.

Strange game for Onana. Could do nothing with the goal, but didn’t have any job at all apart from that moment.

Brilliant on the ball today. Something we could never get with our previous number 1

Really? I'm a pretty big Onana fan and am happy to write off the errors in the two games previous but I thought he had a very poor game distribution wise. Short passing was excellent and assured, but anything in the air seemed to go straight to City or out of play. Feels like his mid and long range passing is weirdly inconsistent, absolutely brilliant some games and awful in others.

If you watch even afew games you’ll see that all ball playing keepers are the same. His short and mid game is fantastic. Long balls will always be a lottery particularly as we don’t have a target man. Hes one of the best on the ball in the game. That’s been clear from day one for me.

How did he 'con' people? By doing it very well at his previous clubs?
His pass completion rates have been consistently below 80% through the last few seasons, even before Utd. It’s pretty clear he’s not very accurate with this passing. For comparison, Allison and Ederson are way better. We were told we were getting a goalkeeper with world class distribution skills but stats tell a different story.

The one that he stood and watched as it went left of centre of the goal? If it was in the corner then I'd say 'fair enough, unstoppable goal' but that wasn't the case here.

How did Onana himself con anyone though?

I'm probably nitpicking, but I really dislike how people now use words like 'fraud' or 'con'. These words mean that someone intentionally misled people - but what posters virtually always actually mean is stuff like 'not as good as I thought', 'not as good as he seemed', or 'not as good as people said'. In all those cases, 'con' and 'fraud' are inappropriate and that annoys me.

Exactly this, people have unrealistic expectations if they expect their keepers to be pinging scholes like passes. He is one of the calmest keeper in possession and has great distribution overall.

As for the %, Onana was constantly told to try and free one of our attackers (mainly Dalot) behind the defence when playing under ten hag. More ambitious passes than most keepers would be attempting. Wasn't it the same at inter? Going direct to Dzeko?

This is right on the money.

People see Ederson hit Haaland with a long pass which results in a goal once a season and think he does it regularly because it sticks in the mind. If people watched the match yesterday and held Ederson to the same bizarre standard they hold Onana to, they'd also be saying his distribution was shite because he wasn't picking out the centre forward with every long pass.

The real strength you get with Onana when compared to De Gea is that he's comfortable with the ball at his feet. You still get mistakes, as the game in midweek showed all too well, but by and large he isn't an effective trigger for the opposition press. As good as De Gea's shot stopping was, the same could absolutely not be said about him.

His mid range passing (pings out to the FB/WB) are definitely a bit hit and miss. And were a lot more miss than hit yesterday. It’s not a particular strength of his IMO. I actually think his very long range passes are more likely to be accurate.

That’s not his main strength with the ball at his feet though. Which is his composure and short passing. A great example was how much he was involved in a long spell of possession leading up to the Amad header. There’s no chance that a keeper like DDG would have touched the ball that many times without at least once losing his nerve and launching it.

Onana is going through a rough patch, nothing more. His ball control skills were always overrated but here we are and we've got a keeper who was fantastic for three months and has earned the benefit of the doubt over a quick run of poor form.

Rumors coming out of the Spanish press is that Amorim wants Onana gone and in favor of acquiring Nice goalkeeper Marcin Bulka. Overall, I'm happy with Onana's performance this season. I don't think getting a new goalkeeper from another league will solve all of the problems.

Are these from legit journos or just unsourced clickbait. ?

One thing that I like a lot about Onana is that he seems a very strong presence in the locker room. In every interview I've seen he comes off very well and exudes positivity and confidence in his team-mates and himself. Confidence might rub people the wrong way if you're making mistakes, but as a goalkeeper I think unwavering confidence is more important than any other position on the field.

Didn't think we could buy from Nice at the moment?
