In any top side, keeper is your first piece of the puzzle, it needs to be solid and reliable always giving 8 out of 10. With Onana its a lottery, one day 8/10 other day 2/10. You can not build a side, knowing your main choice keeper is clown. He has two major flaws, he is very slow to go down, any shot which is down his sides he will likely be very late to react to it, secondly he has been prone to few of these passes to attackers, On top of my head, I remember against Turkish side in Champions league last season where he passed straight to their player and Casemiro had to take a red for him. He has not learned jack shit in the last season.

In fairness, he's been a lot better this season than last but he's not reliable and his distribution skills which many felt were worth persaveering for are way overrated. He slows everything down and his long balls are poor.
I think we will buy another keeper sooner, rather than later. The only question for me is whether they will buy a replacement for Onana or a stronger backup to compete with him.

Not sure I'd blame him too much for the pass.

Onana wanted De Ligt to come towards him for the ball, De Ligt is on his heels and gets caught. If De Ligt is ready he can get that ball and pop it across to the right back first time.

Don't agree with that, if De Ligt had come any closer he'd be practically on top of Onana and right between two opposition players. It should have been a first touch pass to De Ligt who could then have passed out to Mazraoi. Onana hesitated and lost the opportunity of the pass and invited the press. Alternatively he could have just booted it forward.

He couldn't really have played it first time because the pass in was too slow and the angle De Ligt gave didn't allow for it, he was too square. When Onana controlled it, De Ligt was a full ten yards away, he calls him towards him, he's not switched on at all. All he had to do was step in one yard and then fire the ball first time out to Mazraoui.

Or Onana could have just booted it first time and bollocked Martinez for giving him a shit pass.

You wouldn’t blame him at all? Well that is interesting.
I mean, you could argue that he dilly-dallied in the initial phase, but that's not anything wildly different from what keepers these day are doing up and down the land.

Looking at Onana's body shape when he was setting himself to make the pass, it was clear that De Ligt would be the most likely recipient of the pass. Imo getting caught on his heels was the problem.

That's a lot of the problem, he takes too long to pass the ball in every game. He should have moved the ball out wide quickly to (I think) Mazraoui but instead fecked around with it, the pass to Mazraoui was cut off and he's left with only one option, a risky pass to a surrounded de Ligt (well, two options if you count getting rid of the f**king ball, remember when keepers did that?!)

Another giant ETH waste of money. Seems determined to see us out of Europe for some reason

I wouldn't blame him at all for the goal. It's completely on De Ligt.

But Onana did invite pressure on himself to begin with.

It was a really poor pass to play but what on earth was De Ligt doing? he could have got to the ball easilly but hesitated and allowed the attacker to get it instead.

I wonder if United will ever get back to competing at the top level the way some of our fans continuously make excuses for shit play. The goal Amdre conceded against MGW was due to the swerve on the ball apparently (shot was from dead centre of goal, ball crossed the line dead centre of goal, some "swerve"), and the suicidal pass he gave tonight was de Ligt's fault!

I want to like Onana, and I thought he was coming good this season. But no matter how well he seems to be playing in a season or in a game, he'll always be a ricket factory. I don't think that will ever leave his game as I don't believe his technique or his concentration levels are good enough to overcome that.

In a better team, it could possibly be overcome as he'd make his f**k ups when we were 3-0 up and we could all laugh about it here. But in a team that is struggling to win games, his mistakes are gonna put us in a hole 9 times out of 10.

Anyone blaming anyone other than Onana for the goal needs to have a word with themselves.
Stop fecking about with it and delaying things when there is a clear pass, you are not pirlo for gawds sake. You are a goalie just stop shots on goal and pass it to a defender.
Rapidly losing patience based on the last two games….. and a general feeling that in every game there is a calamity waiting to happen.

Disagree. Onana should have seen the attacker marking Mattijs and cleared the ball. It’s on the GK for playing his CB into trouble.

You would think he wasn't our best player the whole season so far by reading some posts on here. It's a fecking Twilight Zone on here.
It’s rock bottom if our best player of the season is the keeper that keeps making mistakes.

Only player in squad who'll never be dropped no matter how shit he plays.
He has zero competition. Bayandir is nowhere near the standard required and only here because of the club scrounging around in the bargain bin for a third keeper. Tom Heaton is semi-retired and not a serious option. The only youngster with any potential was sold off.

What the feck am I reading, I am done tonight.

And I would recommend you to actually watch the games instead of online memes.

I don't see it that way at all - Firstly Martinez couldn't do much else than that pass, and there wasn't anything wrong with it. Then there were three opposition players moving in, Onana had no time to wait for the ball, take a touch, hesitate, and then pass. De Ligt was expecting a first touch pass which was the easiest and best option. It wouldn't have made sense for De Ligt to move closer to Onana, he'd be right between the two opposition players and closed his own passing angle.

If you watch a replay and pause the moment before Onana receives the ball, its pretty clear that De Ligt is in the right position and a one touch pass to him would have resolved the situation.

I don't consider it a huge mistake, it is something that every goalkeeper can make when trying to play out and gets pressed. The problem is that is a another in a series of mistakes from Onana in his short time here.

I won’t blame him for the goal tonight, well maybe partly, but I simply don’t trust him. He was terrible last season, and made a huge mistake agains Forest, he is always likely to have a blunder. When he has the ball, I get the same feeling I had when we conceded a corner or a cross with De Gea in goal.

Feck sake. Onana did an Onana.
Hopefully not three in a row vs City. He needs to sort himself out.

Yep, totally bizarro. Only player above him is Nous, otherwise he’s been our top performer.
Also disagree. Bruno is consistently brilliant, Amad has been class since ETH left, Garnacho was good before that. Rasmus has been decent too.
To be considered best player a GK has to do wonders, because saving shots and keeping clean sheets is his basic job. Granted he has made a couple of great saves, and his baseline has raised from last year but that’s not saying much when he was so error prone last term. This season he’s only really reached the basic levels we expected from him, he’s not been particularly outstanding. And last season was a pretty low bar for which to improve.

Horrid for the goal. How many goals has come from clear errors now this season? And how does he compare to other gks?

Agreed. Off the top my head, he has made 3 errors leading to goals already this season. That's an improvement on his form from this time last year but it's still not at the level required for a GK to be our player of the season so far. De Gea won those end-of-season awards because he barely made any mistakes that led to goals in each of those years. For me, the order of our player of the season so far goes:

1) Mazraoui
2) Amad
3) Bruno

Hoping he has a good game against city and builds back to where he was again.
He was our best player this season a week ago.

I'm actually glad that is a passing mistake, not another howler like the second goal he conceded v Forest, and this time, the team got him out of jail.

Your ability to constantly downplay the guy is outstanding.
None of those players have played as well as Onana this season.

This is just not serious. Bruno I’d agree is in the conversation but Garnacho? Rasmus? What are we even talking about - this is a dreadful attack that is being bailed out by a decent defense and a fairly strong GK.

Onana has been the second best GK in the prem defensively (tied top on clean sheets and 2nd best by expected goals saved) and you’re comparing him to two struggling young attackers playing in mid-table form?

Again, it’s all starting to get a little bizarro around here.

Give it a break you miserable sods.

He has been one of our best performers this season. He's had a few howlers in the last couple games but that does not justify some comments. Lots of you seem to keep quiet until players have a bad game, do you thrive on beating players up on a forum or something?

He definitely needs to cut these out of his game, seems to have one too many in his pocket, but overall this season he's been great.
