Yeah as good as Zlatan is Rooney at his peak was better.
No fecking way. Rooney was nowhere as good a goalscorer as Zlatan was. Which kind of explains why he never was our main man when we had an another superstar. While Zlatan was always bar once in his career the main guy. And he played with Del Piero, Trezeguet, Adriano, Crespo, Cavani, Di Maria etc.

I don't actually agree with that, but it is certainly close. And also true that Ibra's physical conditioning, which we can all agree is in a different class to Wazza, has been one of the main reasons he has flourished so well into his thirties, which Rooney does not look set to do at all. It is an interesting thread, I think.

This thread from some time ago has some superbly unbalanced opinions about Zlatan compared to Rooney, even though this was when Rooney was at his peak.

Arguably actually slightly before Rooney was at his peak - June 09 was when Ronaldo left and it was after that Rooney hit his best form and had arguably his best season for us. Obviously wasn't watching Zlatan regularly back then but on the whole I'd put him ahead of Rooney - his performances and goalscoring this season has been as good as anything Rooney ever produced for us, and that's him in his mid-30s.

Are you old enough to remember Cantona's aura and impact? It was so special, dramatic and inspiring. I still wear my polo t-shirst with my collar up!

It has to be one of the big 2: PL or EL!

Yes I am, he also went missing in Europe so that's similarity :D

Joking aside it's not a question of either or because there will never be another King Eric for me. Too much love there.

However I think if we do get a European Cup we have not won before Zlatan can be mentioned in the same breath. Partially for winning a European competition but also what it could do for the club next season as a springboard?

It could be argued that Zlatan played his best football since he left Barca. He is better than he was a decade ago.

Suppose so to be fair. It's an interesting one because many would perhaps argue he produced some of his best football at PSG - although obviously a contingent of people will always argue his scoring records were negated by the standard of the league he was in. I'd still say you can argue he was at his best there though because he was often delivering in European games, and was scoring more goals internationally than ever.

Yeah, granted I didn't watch him every week but I saw enough to never fully feel he was playing to his absolute best (even at PSG) but at United I can see that, he's playing like he has a point to prove.

He was even clearing the ball in our box as well, it was basically a one man monster of a performance.

Fingers crossed we get Champions league, I feel that's the stage he deserves.

Been doing that all season.

The start of this season is devastating for Zlatan as his contribution is truly worthy of a Premier League title. Easily this years player of the league so far. Reminds me of that season Cantona kept scoring the winner in 1-0 wins for about 10 games in a row! (96/97 if I remember correctly).

Who knows if he can still do the same next year. Purely down to fitness as the talent and ability is still clearly there. I also wouldn't put it past Zlatan to win us the Europa and FA cup's this season. If he can help do that, yeah, he'll go down in that special section of legends.

This season feels like when SAF and Mark Hughes won us the Cup Winner's Cup in 1991/92. A huge platform from which to create the next dynasty. Its really enjoyable watching this team develop and grow, and this team is so lucky to have Zlatan has the inspiration to grow around.

After reading your post, I am now convinced I have gone mad and created a second account under the username sammsky1 (are you me??)

It was the moyes and LVG years wot done it

He is phenomenal, he pulled us through this match today. I don't want to be think about where we'd be without him this season. He's an incredible professional.

Doesn't matter. Rooney was a better footballer.

Lol, no. Think Zlats was nothing special at Inter and Barca personally but it was the second season at AC Milan where he became an amazing player (for a good 5 seasons...) Bar one year Rooney has never got close to that level.

That one year alone Rooney was above the level you mentioned Zlatan was on at Milan.

Possibly, but then there's the 4 seasons after where Zlatan banged in 35, 41, 30 and 50 goals and is currently on 26. I honestly don't think it's close and I think most neutral football fans would say the same thing.

Zlatan this season (assuming no injury takes place) will likely have a better season than Rooney ever had for us. And Zlatan is not playing as good as he did in the past. He is a superman and the age goes slower for him, but he is getting affected from it.

That is utter bollocks. Zlatan's goal scoring has been amazing this season but his overall play is nothing on Rooney's from 2006-2010! Not even close. Really don't know how you can say that.

Even right at the end, he sprints to get to the ball first and waits to be fouled thus giving us a free kick and killing more time.

Such an intelligent player, he doesn't wear the armband but he's clearly the leader.

We are an one man team this season. We would have been below Everton on the league if it wasn't for him.

His all round play this season has been awesome and next to his goals, he also has 7 assists despite that he doesn't take corners or other stoppages.

Zlatan has scored more goals already this season than Rooney did in all those years you mentioned bar 2009-2010. He ran more than Ibra, but Ibra is the better player.

And well, Rooney was at his peak back then, while Ibra is slightly past his peak now.

Indeed. Hoping that he gets the armband next season considering that he is the leader of this team, and the best player. Nothing against Smalling, but him wearing the armband while Ibra is on the pitch seems weird.

Where would we be without this beast of a player?

He embodies a great Manchester United player. He isn't the captain, but he is the leader on the field.

You just knew he'd score the winner if he got a chance.

Really wish we had him sooner.

35 Honours for Ryan Giggs
32 Honours for Zlatan

Who's gonna have more trophies?

I think Zlatan myself.

Each and every critic has been thoroughly embarrassed, and now can only sit back and watch in awe. One must wonder what Michael Owen was thinking. It was Ibrahimovic’s 223rd goal for club and country and turning 30 – one more than Owen managed in his entire club career.

Good 2 goals but I think his link up play wasn't the best and he slowed us down. He's good but we should go for a younger, better striker who will compliment our play more.
