VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

What counts as deliberate will come down to interpretation. Like most rules or laws.
or what team you are of course.

This is why the rules need changing. Interpretation should not be allowed.

Offside has become far too confusing. If you're standing offside in any situation you should be offside. Just clear it up and make it simple for everybody.

Not even a replay of the Carroll tackle on eriksen. Looked a red to me in real time

It really should have been red. The ref is standing next to the situation and should be able to see it. (And what is even more crazy is that Andy Carroll learned nothing from getting away with it.)

The TV camera was from the other angle, didn’t realize how bad a tackle it actually was.

I thought it was stonewall, but if I were to rationalize a non-decision, the defender also got a touch on the ball (after going through Case). Who knows, reffing in this game was terrible.

Two clear pens not given recently. This one and the mctom one against palace. At least this one didn't cost us. Refs need to be available for post match questions.

They should really use video footage to help referees punish decisions like that.
In another episode it was Carroll (I think) who went through Malacia lowering his shoulder to catch the defender full in the middle of his chest and hurling him into touch. A nasty piece of work!

He's a shite ref.

Shocking decision and Carroll is a horrible cnut. From memory there was one game a few years ago where he basically speared DDG in the box while not even going for the ball at all. Horrible horrible player.

In a weird way the Maguire one is more infuriating. He is literally held back from getting to their goalscorer. He may not have made it but an opponent's fouls stopped him doing that. They are the decisions I fecking hate. It's a 'clear and obvious' foul but for some reason its just ignored. Like how incompetent to you have to be to not see someone being clearly fouled and still not make the call. Didn't matter tonight but eventually will.

Said this just before the match thread crashed. He didn't make a meal of it compared to the Chelsea player who got a pen from mct that game. If he falls and rolls about var probably looks and over turns it.

That's the subjective part I guess.
And the subjective decision on the pitch was that it wasn’t offside, because the linesman didn’t give it on the pitch, so therefore they have deemed this a clear and obvious error then in order for them to overturn it based on the subjective interpretation. So why would they do that? They’ve literally just raised the bar for VAR interventions to deny us penalties over the past few games, and now they’re lowering it again.

The Dale Johnson tweet explains some things, but it doesn’t explain how we’ve had players called for a “deliberate play” when sliding in and lunging for the ball (like when Kane won a penalty against Liverpool because Lovren lunged for the ball and touched it, which meant a new phase started then). How is lunging and stretching for the ball and getting a toe on it a more controlled action than what the Reading defender did last night?

This is why we need to mic them up so they can explain their decisions because either we have a case of referees not knowing the rules or the rules being so complicated that we get these ridiculous situations where seemingly similar situations result in wildly different outcomes.

It's all down to the furore from the Bruno goal against Stockport. Refs can see if they don't give us a decision they are not going to be criticised but when they do all hell breaks loose.

Looking at that Liverpool goal and every game there is something strange and wierd. Every game. How can VAR referees have different rules every single game. Unbelievable.

It does feel like this. The Bruno offside goal was analysed and referenced for about 2 weeks non-stop and I know it was in a big game and the rules there are flaky at best but I can't think of another decision that has had that much attention.

They didn't even mention the penalty shout at half time despite it being an absolutely stone wall penalty on Casemiro. Then you have all the idiots suggesting that United get all the decisions at OT. Klopp mentions it and we get nothing for a long time. Pep mentions it and low and behold we are getting obvious decisions made against us. VAR should have told the ref to look at the Carroll challenge on Eriksen and the penalty and yet it did neither.

I don't have much issue with the disallowed Rashford goal. Much like the Bruno one, its up for debate as there is no absolute rule to cover it. Was it similar enough to the Salah one for a precedent to have been set? Absolutely. Did they perhaps decide in hindsight that Salahs was a mistake? Probably.

Like most people, its not the errors that hurt the most, its the apparent inability for them to be consistent and make obvious decisions. Neither the penalty or the missing of Carrolls red card effected the outcome of the game but they will. They make so many of these mistakes that it does make a difference to trophies and league position.

How are they going to get around this one?

Just do away with VAR already, it’s a shambles. How can they not look at that ffs

these terrible rules about when VAR can and can't be used are ridiculous. what's the point in having it if it can't be used in most circumstances?

What’s the point in having it if even when it’s used they don’t make the correct call. It’s an absolute farce

VAR can feck off and that ref who thinks that’s just deserves a yellow should be fecked off too

Says it all about refs.

Fabinho walking away practically telling teammates "I'm off." and refs do nothing.

They deserve every ounce of shit they get.

It's so frustrating how shit it is, because you can't even say maybe they didn't see it, like you could before. They've looked at it and done nothing.

Disgusting. FA looking after Master Klopp and his cronies.

Allowing that sort of challenge after the Carroll on Eriksen yesterday speaks volumes
