VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

A large reason why it's so chaotic is because they just don't have the balls to punish players running over screaming; "CHECK IT! CHECK IT! THAT'S A FOUL/RED/PENALTY!" etc and they get hurried and worried and panic and rush a decision.

They should get some top rugby refs to give them a seminar how to ref with authority and composure but they're far too prideful for that and think they're celebrities in their own right now. Feck the players, feck the crowd, get the decision correct.

Impressive refereeing! I’m involved in youths sports and some refs also take on an educational role and explain in detail why they made their decision. Those refs never have any problems with authority nor complaints, as they often state “the way I saw it…”, while the other refs who just make the call without explanation have more problems. I think this is the way also at the highest level.

Good video. It also reminded me that in Rugby Union direct shoulder contact to the head is a straight red card... Obviously not in football if you play for Liverpool.

This is the way forward if they want a grown up and fair sport.

But I’m pretty sure that’s not what the rule makers want. Controversy creates emotion, and emotion creates engagement, and engagement creates cash. I wish football was this way and I’d love to hear the referee explaining what they saw! I don’t mind if they saw it wrong, that’s life and difficulty of refereeing a fast paced sport.

This is what I was saying the other day. Rugby takes a very strong view now on head contact, sometimes a wee but over the top but it’s still for protection. That one on De Ligt was a stone wall red and should always be, cannot understand how it wasn’t.

You might be right. All the controversies and emotions might in the end create extra interest and cash. Personally i don’t mind players being upset once in a while but now they complain and whine about everything.

There are so many small things that have been allowed to creep into the game, diving, faking injury, waving imaginary cards etc.. referees won't punish it. Yellow cards and retrospective punishment should be used. Teams now use fake injuries as a time out to get drinks onboard and ruin the flow of games. Newcastle do it all the time.

My personal favourite is that guy Montiel, who would just go down holding his face when a player ran past him, to try and get the game stopped. He did it against Utd land when the ref wasn't having any of it, he was up in an instant.

Players just do it, because they know the referee will stop the game and it's become such an easy tactic to exploit, to waste time, relieve pressure, slow the game down and stop attacks etc.

I honestly think they should just play on if someone is lying on the ground. If they need treatment on the pitch they are inactive and the game goes on around them. Only stop it if they need to be stretchered off, which rarely happens. Otherwise, if you're on the ground, you're still active and can still potentially play people onside.

Potential head injury or someone goes down holding their head/face, just send them off for a period of time, 5 minutes minimum for HIA. Being down to 10 men regularly would soon stop them taking the piss.

All endorsed by their managers as well. That's the worst part of it for me.

Agreed on the last part.

If a player is down injured, take him off the pitch on a stretcher no questions asked, and let the game play on.
It would discourage players faking injuries as they would leave their team at a disadvantage

Scrap every single one of them and fly in and out foreign refs every week who aren't so obviously intimidated by home crowds or reffing by narrative and bias against certain players. The money is there. Reffing is at a below amateur level

United 12 fouls and 2 yellows.

Arsenal 3 fouls and 0 yellows.

It’s corruption.

Didn't they implement that rule about 20+ years ago, starting in one of the world cups? It stopped feigning injuries dead in its tracks.

So the problem is actually the ref/rules and not VAR. Unbelievable how many of those free kicks came from a tiny bit of contact, even when winning the ball. The only one that stops a chance is the Bruno one and he comes away with a yellow

One of the worst halves of officiating I've ever witnessed. Nothing will be done. Bruno was fouled, and over reacts (I get it) gets booked, so they will wind him up no end now.

Soft free kicks, a ridiculous yellow for Martinez, clear yellow on Jesus missed, a clear dive again against Martinez.

Time wasting on set pieces.

We've limited there chances quite well, and are in with a chance but Bruno needs to calm down.

Crowd is reffing this game. Maybe 5 minutes of football and the rest is this garbage due to all these fall on the floor candidates.

So based on a rule to protect the referee club, and not on a rule to eliminate cheating from the game....

It is a bit chilly, so we might actually just see him in his Arsenal scarf after half time.

I don’t think united foul that much yet nearly every game they have the most fouls, it’s not even subtle anymore

Our players have rightly complained but the refs like playing the dictator so consequently book the player. Now their cards are marked, next foul and its a red. All because the ref can't do his job.

Refs clearly have a grudge against us. I mean, how could they not? Most of these guys probably grew up watching United dominate every season, and let’s be honest, they were probably the ones in school sulking in their Arsenal or Liverpool lunchboxes. Decades of envy have turned into this bizarre whistle-blowing vendetta.

Throw in the media, who treat every 50/50 call in our favor like it's the crime of the century, and it’s no surprise refs are terrified of giving us anything. It’s safer for them to just lean the other way and let the commentators gush about how 'brave' and 'neutral' they are.

Honestly, at this point, we should just embrace it.

Instead of dwelling on it, we need to channel this into a proper "us vs. the world" mentality. Great teams thrive under adversity, and we have the history and spirit to do just that. If the calls aren’t going our way, we need to make our performances so dominant that no referee or external factor can influence the outcome. Let’s focus on the football, stay united as a team, and let our results speak louder than any whistle.

Not to mention that one of the yellows we got was for an Arsenal foul that denied us a goalscoring chance

One more day. Nothing new. No official statement from our club. Any normal club would put out statement about all those decisions.

Same theme for most of our games, we get a 2-3 yellow cards first half, they can make heavy fouls. Opposition get the softest fouls given quickly. It's very difficult playing against 12 men each week, when does this payback stop from the refs? We have to walk on water and be very lucky to come through unscathed and somehow snatch a winner, we're not allowed to get any headway or momentum in games.

Bet we end up on equal cards after he gives them a few yellows in the 97th minute

It's amazing that the best league in the world has the worst referees in the world.

I sometimes think it's super obvious that they are match fixing... but then I don't know if I believe they are competent enough to pull it off this well.

Said it before. Respecting the refs has failed.

The sport needs to move to explanation and accountability.

Respect is earned by being competent, responsible and accountable and not the old school notion of 'station'

We’re basically not allowed to be aggressive, meaning any sort of pressing is almost impossible
