VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Generally you don't bump into someone you're running away from in the same direction, they need to catch you and instigate contact. You agree with the decision, that's good for you. I don't as it just wasn't right, over 3 minutes to find a obvious error.

Obvious error is for the usual decisions like fouls and handballs, offside is a yes or no.

The VAR called the ref over because of the subjective element of the Maguire offside in reference to interference, once it's clear to the ref that he prevents the Fulham defender from accelerating towards the ball, and makes an effort for the ball it's his subjective view on whether it impacts the defender, which it obviously does.

I'm as pro being biased towards your own football team as it gets but this one is a loser, but have fun with it.

I think the issue is consistency. It feels they’re trying to find issues when United score. 4 minutes looking for an error when other teams get away with identical situations in other weeks.

We won't see another decision like this all season. It was bollocks, end of...

People still discussion VAR like it is something beyond human control. They use VAR when they want to use and they use it how they want it. It has nothing to do with football and what they told fans when they introduced it. Just something to accupy minds of people. We have been through this many times over and over.

The real question should be WHY and HOW are we getting these decision against us 99% of the time? When same stuff don't happen to any other teams in such a scale. This is what should be brought up to the light. This is what ten Hag should talk about every press conference. This is what club should do official statement and demand investigations by people outside football. This is what fans should talk about.

No, since the defender never had possession of the ball.

See it's so easy to contort the law because of how it's written.

This is an incredible interpretation. If a defender has possession of the ball, then offside is impossible, so that clearly isn't what it means.

Unfortunately this period has coincided with us being really bad and so if he says much the media will turn it into him moaning because he is under pressure. What you need is people like Neville & Keane to push this but they don’t do it at all

VAR was brought in to find clear and obvious mistakes made by officials on the field, for me the McTominay goal doesn't falls under that category.

I think because as we’ve all seen, if United get a decision and it’s later deemed to be the wrong one… it gets talked about endlessly for the next week. The attention it gets is way over the top and you’d think each time, it was like the officials have made the worst decision in the world.

It’s created a situation where I think, officials sub-consciously know it’s simpler to not give a decision in our favour if there are any doubts whatsoever. If it’s a wrong decision but not in our favour, it will get minimal attention. It’s the easy option.

VAR awards psv a penalty for the exact same situation that happened to us at Twente last week. Fecking inconsistent twats. Grmbl.

Maguire clearly impacted the defender that otherwise would have had a strong possibility of winning the ball before it got to Garnacho.

We've been screwed by the refs and VAR a shitload over the last 12 months or so, but this isn't one of them. The only question I have about it was why it took the referees so long to decide.
How did he clearly impact the defender when even the offside player couldn’t get to the ball? The defender is nowhere near it

Even talksport recognises the inconsistency!

It was doomed to fail from the start as “clear and obvious” is nothing but such. Only solution is to remove it all together or introduce a (very short) time limit to make a decision.

Off-side decisions don't fall under clear and obvious, though do they? All goals are checked for off-side, I believe.

Although, if it's a 'subjective' one then maybe it should.
I was actually watching this during a wedding haha but it feels like Maguire to me wasn't really involved. He didn't touch it did he?

Nope.

Awful decision. Classic example of the way VAR make a simple game stupidly complicated. Really is ruining the game. Disgraceful the way we have to put up with this shit.
I mean it still gets more right than wrong but they need to clearly be re explained what clear and fecking obvious means.

Finally people are waking up to the fact that it’s destroying our game and sucking the fun out. Says it from the beginning it will destroy football. Should be sacked off ASAP

Decisions that always benefits certain teams or that pretty much always benefits opposition of a certain teams shouldn't not be called inconsistency anymore.

There is ABU agenda and looking at decisions thats been made, articles that have been written and much more this year just confirms that.

More right than wrong is nowhere near good enough for all the downsides it brings. Plus getting any wrong has moved the conversation from acceptable human error to corruption. Which doubles down on how it’s ruining the sport as entertainment.

Do you think micing up refs like you hear in cricket would help the matter?

The sad thing is, there’s no way back now.
Absolutely no way back. You take it away and the first time a big decision is missed there will be a meltdown. VAR just needs to be revised to do two things a) make decisions faster b) not review subjective calls.

Do you think micing up refs like you hear in cricket would help the matter?

Nope. We’ve all heard the audio by now. It’s total chaos. Trying to use video technology in a sport whose USP is fast paced, non stop action means it’s impossible to have the calm and measured discussions you hear in cricket and rugby. If we could hear all the frantic gabbling it would just be even more annoying.

Yeah I'm definitely reaching but my interpretation is still technically correct because the laws are written so poorly.

Are you serious ?
2. Offside offence

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
  • interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
  • interfering with an opponent by:
    • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
    • challenging an opponent for the ball or
    • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
    • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
The bit you've highlighted in bold is only relevant for Garnacho's pass into the area isn't it? Maguire isn't offside for that. And there's no one the Fulham defender is getting to Garnacho from the free kick with Maguire there or not.

Maguire clearly impacted the defender that otherwise would have had a strong possibility of winning the ball before it got to Garnacho.

That's a stretch, there were other defenders behind the one marking Maguire. And Maguire was only marginally offside in the first place.

While it may be within the rules of the game it seems like a very extreme interpretation of them that we'll not see again for a long time.

Do you think micing up refs like you hear in cricket would help the matter?

I would genuinely hate that, we should just go back to incompetent refs making incompetent decisions in the heat of the moment and leave it at that. VAR has just added an extra layer of incompetence whilst sucking any emotion and excitement out of the game.

Absolutely no way back. You take it away and the first time a big decision is missed there will be a meltdown. VAR just needs to be revised to do two things a) make decisions faster b) not review subjective calls.

It won't go away but it needs to be downscaled. But yeah they are getting involved in way too many decisions and taking way too long.

VAR spending 3 minutes on the disallowed goal makes absolutely no sense.
Had the goal not been reviewed, there’s not a single soul that would’ve claimed it should be disallowed.
It was in no way a clear and obvious error, and I’m still not sure I understand where was the offside or foul on that play.

Two games in a row we’re being punished on free kicks for things that happened every single game

I'm convinced they want rid of it and doing all they can to make it not fit for purpose.

Before VAR, they were a clandestine cabal of cnuts who were untouchable and had to answer to no-one. They still answer to no-one but with VAR, there is scrutiny to their shit decisions and they don't like it.

I think this is fair. You don't have to play the ball to have an impact on the player going for the ball. And if you're offside and go for the ball like that in a crowded area you're impacting the play and defenders actions in attempting to play the ball.

The bit you've highlighted in bold is only relevant for Garnacho's pass into the area isn't it? Maguire isn't offside for that. And there's no one the Fulham defender is getting to Garnacho from the free kick with Maguire there or not.
No, why would it only be relevant for that ?

I was actually watching this during a wedding haha but it feels like Maguire to me wasn't really involved. He didn't touch it did he?

Nope. He swung his leg at a ball he'd no hope of reaching which was seemingly enough for him to be considered active and ruled out the goal.
