VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

6 minutes.

Liverpool got 9 minutes at the weekend when they were chasing a goal when literally NOTHING happened in that half. They got 6 in the first half too when sod all happened. 15 minutes extra time!
Was listening to an episode of It's Always Sunny podcast and it was funny hearing the three of them discuss how bizarre and arbitrary the added time is in football.
Just how we can't comprehend much of what goes on in America and they themselves can't explain either, so is the added time in football. There's no good reason anymore for why it's so seemingly random.

Didn’t see the game but watched post match goals on sky.
I don’t think spurs 4th goal should be disallowed.
Bayandir too weak and missed the ball anyway.
If that was chalked off against us even with var I’d be upset.
How he fuxking missed it in the first place should be the major concern for us.
My my. Clear foul anyday. If that goal was chalked off against us, I would say its the correct call.

Look it's definitely a foul... a keepers arms are basically the equivalent of a players legs... if you put your arm out like that across someones legs as they were going to kick the ball it would be a very obvious foul.

However, I'm not too bothered by it because I'm also convinced that he wouldn't have saved it even if there was no one within 10 yards of him.

100%. Couldn’t give a shit about tonight’s mistake if we could have started the season without VAR in every game. That would have been a huge improvement overall.
I get the frustration with the VAR but iirc English referees were making so many mistakes before VAR it became ridiculous at some point imo. At least some of those mistakes aren't happening anymore. And some offside goals don't stand anymore for example. I like that.

A Late PEC Zwolle winner was ruled out today for offside. from a corner.

You can't be offside from a corner, derp.

Did the player kicking the ball come into play. Was it an outswinger maybe drawing all the players out.

It was a short corner with both players sort of standing in the little corner box. VAR ruled the one that got the first touch after it was taken as offside.

So it wasn't the corner they were called offside for then

Video of it there - click the text part, not the play button, then watch it on X or else it takes you tot he ESPN website. Weird.

Weird incident.

You can't be offside from a corner because it's impossible pretty much anyway. The ball is on the goal line when it's taken, or not quite if you were to nitpick and include the quadrant so you can't normally be beyond it. However, it is written in the laws on top of that, just like you can't be from a goal kick or throw in.

Unusually he is beyond the corner taker here. Still, as you can't be offside he isn't.

The ball is still moving when the corner taker takes it, rolling from the momentum of him placing it down rather than a bit of wind or whatever - not legal if you wanted to be strict. That would be a re-take though and nothing to do with offside.

Ref was called to the screen after giving a red card for this and still upheld the sending off.

Full version here - it has to be one of the worst decisions ever made.

I swear every year we get a referee who no one has ever heard of before who proceeds to spend a game randomly guessing decisions and then disappears never to be seen again.

Today feels like that day.

ya, we have two yellows and wolves have none despite similar fouls.

oh theres a wolves yellow at last

Come on, Bruno's yellow was the most obvious petulant, "I did not get my decision", foul.

Two bookings early on for first fouls by Yoro and Fernandes. Several free kicks not given to us. I never see opposition players get booked early on, but ours often do for a first foul.

While this is very frustrating, I’ve come to think our players just aren’t smart enough. Wolves hound the ref, the fans pile on pressure to give a decision, and the players milk every contact. There was one innocuous challenge when Cunha went over and did half a dozen rolls for good measure. Refs have always been prone to persuasion, yet we never seem to apply any meaningful pressure. It’s as though we’ve become too nice in the post SAF era.

Honestly, if a load of random football fans are saying something will happen within 20 minutes of a match - youve got a problem. there was no chance we werent getting a red card tonight. It was a guarantee.

this is entering worst reffing performance ive ever seen territory.

First yellow was so soft. Ref couldn't wait to pull the second one out. Bruno might be stupid but these refs absolutely love the storyline of United struggling and help it happen

Feels like the ref is out to make a name for himself tonight. Evening kick off, big audience, its his time to shine.

i hate being right. called this quite early. i cant remember hearing a whistle so often. its the refs match and the players are just accesories.

We do seem to get an unfair share of early yellow cards while the opposition clatter us.

Didn’t see the earlier card but the second yellow looked like the right decision, no?

I think it's also his first notable foul since the initial yellow. How often do players get away with a final warning in similar circumstances?

Not saying it makes it a "wrong" decision but I'm sick of seeing United players booked by the letter and others not. Same goes for cynical fouls.

He stomped him FFS.

Second Bruno yellow was the only correct decision he's made all game.

Absolutely miles out of his depth, has no idea how to control a game, no idea what a foul is, no idea what a yellow card should be, and let the crowd influence him, just absolutely obviously over promoted in every way. Staggering he's made it to this level.

First yellow was nonsense, second yellow was fair.

Even worse call with the goal from the corner being allowed to stand when Onana was clearly pushed in the back.
