United Open Talks With De Gea ?

Thursday November 18 2010
MANCHESTER United are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Spain U-21 goalkeeper David De Gea from Atletico Madrid in January.

Talks are at an advanced stage after weeks of negotiations, with United expected to pay about £15m for the 20-year-old.

It was unclear last night whether De Gea would join United in January or see out the season at Atletico.

An imposing figure at almost 6ft 4ins, De Gea -- contracted until June 2013 -- was part of the Atletico team who defeated Fulham 2-1 in the Europa League final in May.

He rejected the chance to join Wigan last year.

He could be the perfect replacement for United's current No 1 Edwin van der Sar - his teammates at Atletico have already nicknamed him Van der Gea, because of his physical likeness to the Dutchman, and his similar style.

Don't see anything in the Spanish papers, which puts a big doubt over this.

Did I miss this story or did he really turn down Wigan.

Atletico Madrid starlet David De Gea has confirmed he turned down the chance to join Roberto Martinez at Wigan Athletic last summer.

The teenage keeper had been all set to link up with the Latics before deciding he wanted to remain in La Liga for at least another season.

De Gea reportedly rejected Wigan as his long-term ambition remains replacing Edwin van der Sar as Manchester United's number one.

Interest

While the 19-year-old has confirmed his interest in playing in the Premier League, he is in no rush to make the move to English football.

"I was about to go to Wigan but wanted to stay at Atletico and take my opportunity another time," confirmed the Spaniard.

"The Premier League would be enjoyable and is an option I would like a bit later in life.

"Now is not the time to move. For me, Van der Sar has been one of the best in the world."

He's very good, at £18m I obviously don't want him but he'd probably cost closer to £10m if Wigan could make a bid for him.

£18m for a great keeper and could be one of best in the world for the next 15 years? Bargain.

It's a big risk to pay 18m for a guy who "could be" good. This guy is pretty inexperienced at the highest level. He could be the new Van Der Sar. He could be the new Taibi.

Isn't the fee being mentioned around 15m? Well anyway this is the sort of fee your going to have to pay if you want a good goalkeeper. He's been very good in most of the games I've watched him and Spanish keepers in over the last decade or so have a tendency of being brilliant so if it happens it's a good deal.

Bit of a gamble then.

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of youngsters out there that come with "success or your money back" guarantees. Which means we're forced to buy the most promising youngsters we can find then hope they fulfil their potential. Nightmare, eh?

I'm not saying we should not buy the player. I was just pointing out the risk. "Untied" was calling the deal an 18m "bargain", but I don't see how you can apply that adjective to an 18m transaction that may or may not work out.

If De Gea did turn out to be Uniteds keeper for many years then it may end up looking a bargain. But until then it's obviously a transfer with risks attached.

It's obviously somewhat of a gamble no matter what the fee is, but I think a lot of clubs would be happy to take that risk on a goalkeeper who has shown a lot of promise. More so than I can remember from many other young goalkeepers anyway.

I can see us having to spend at least £10-20million on any goalkeeper we want to replace van der Sar with and the potential for us to be able to keep De Gea for about 15 years as a lot of people are suggesting is very tempting if it all works out. The ideal situation is having van der Sar sign a one-year deal and allow De Gea to play more games than the likes of Kuszczak and Foster did while they were our number two. It allows him to taken under Edwin's wing and I'm sure he'd enjoy the experience, it also allows De Gea more time to bleed into the side before becoming our number one.

I hope we sign him to be honest, I've only seen about five Atletico games where he's played admittedly, but I have been impressed with what I saw in each game and most of the comments about him are positive.

My cock is also out by the way.

Any signing that prevents us from signing a past it Buffon is good enough for me.

Good player, great age and very talented. For £15 million denitely sign him.

s reported on Thursday the British newspaper The Times, Manchester United have reached a deal to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea in January in exchange for 17.5 million euros.
The talks to become De Gea over from Van der Sar in goal for the 'Red evils' paracer be "at an advanced stage," as published by the British tabloid, "after several weeks of negotiations."
What is not entirely clear is whether the Atletico goal would join in January or end of the season expected to reach the Premiership club since the summer. De Gea's signing for Manchester is being rumored for a long timesince Alex Ferguson was at the Mestalla for a duel of the Liga between Valencia and Atletico Madrid.

IF we sign him in the summer do you think Edwin will retire? Or will stay at least for a year as a mentor...

I'm guessing the latter. Or if he does retire, maybe take on a role as a goal-keeping coach?

The kid obviously idolises him. I'm sure VdS will have been used as a factor in selling United to him (assuming there's any truth to this)

You mean alongside ES or replacing him?

I'd like VDS to stay as the back-up next season, assuming PIG leaves. Ed is still very fit and very good and would basically be playing if necessary.

Fergie going to watch Valencia during the Scunthorpe game always looked like a precursor to this. Particularly when Eric Steele was with him.

Buying potentially one of the best goalkeepers in the world at his age could be a masterstroke. If he does well and wants to stay then we have the goalkeeping position sorted for the next decade or more. If he decided the grass in Spain is a nicer shade of green then we'd probably get twice the money for him or more.

Naturally it's a risk to buy a young goalkeeper, but if you buy at the top end of the market then you lessen that risk. Which seems to be what we're doing.
