United Open Talks With De Gea ?

Havent seen much of De Gea in action at all but hear good things, my only concern is having an 18-19yo as our number one. I know they say if your good enough your old enough but to me experience in a keeper is pretty important.

I am not sure about PIG as number one either though, he is a great backup but not a number one IMO.

He has made some fine saves today against RBK, but multiple very suspect interventions easily outweigh the good parts.

Err the figures are in our accounts and Smalling cost £10 mill, by all accounts, including SAF's. I don't get why people constantly downplay the fees we pay for players.

Yes but Bebe cost just above 4m according to president of Guimares. The 7m pounds fee has only been seen in the media with no sources.
Transfer fees are mostly just ballpark figures. People shouldn't talk about them like it's the gospel.

It's also varies in the media if they do have records of it weather they take into account the players signing on fee or contract as well because they've been known to do that just so the figure looks higher than the actual transfer fee.

Yes but people on here weren't fapping themselves raw claiming Bebe or Smalling to be the next best thing before we signed them. With De Gea, they are.

Personally I'd rather not replace Van Der Sar with De Gea. He's be too much of a risk imo and he should be left to develop a little at home in Spain.

I'd rather see Neuer or Adler.

You must see the problem with this, so he plays a couple more years in Spain and everybody realises he actually is th real deal and one of the world's top keepers, then either we have to spend 30 million quid plus for him ala Juve for Buffon or Real and Barca sign him after one of their keepers starts playing a bit shit leaving us up shit creek desperately trying to find someone just as good(or stick with PIG).

No we paid £7.4 mill for Bebe. His club got 70% of the fee, a sports agency got the rest. Here's the link:

Manchester United's £7.4 million summer purchase of Portuguese winger Bébé resulted in selling club Vitória de Guimarães receiving just 70 per cent of the fee, with the remaining 30 per cent being allocated to the Gestifute sports agency, who part-owned the player.

Manchester United's Bébé deal saw sports agency Gestifute net 30 per cent of transfer fee - Telegraph

Sick of constantly people down playing transfer fees, as something to beat the club with. Just look at our accounts to see just how much we've spent over the last few years. You'd be surprised at how many fees in the media are actually below what we actually paid.

The Smalling fee was confirmed by SAF himself on a radio interview. Another paper actually broke down why we ended up paying what we did. A lot was to do with Arsenal matching our initial £7 mill offer and with us there after upping our bid to £10 mill.

He wont go to Real or Barca.

Won an award as best Madrid (the city) player last night pictured with the one who won the same thing 10 years ago.

Tall enough, but not very wide.

What ever happened to Sergio Asengo?
I've been wondering about this as well. Asenjo was supposed to be the next big thing until De Gea suddenly burst onto the scene last season. Is he still at Atletico?

Edit: A quick google search shows that he is.

What ever happened to Sergio Asengo?

I was thinking the same thing. Everybody was talking about Asenjo and how highly rated he is and then he gets himself injured. So De Gea steps up in his place and has held a spot in the first team every since.

So Athletico have two of the top talented Keepers in the world on their books?

Even before the injury he was already ousted out of the team by a youth team product so you wouldn't think it's too promising for Asenjo right now.

Did get a lot of praise after the u21s so maybe the reason they would let go of De Gea is because of Asenjo.

Asenjo had a shaky start to his Atletico career and it coincided with their worst start to a league in years. De Gea took his oppurtunity and hasnt looked back since. They also have another young goalkeeper who's highly rated, his name is Joél i think.

I know what you're saying, he is very inexperienced though. I would still consider Adler and Neuer a bit of a gamble as they're young but in terms of experience they are miles ahead of De Gea.

Given our record of taking a young promising 'keeper and developing them i'd fear that spunking 15mil on an incredibly inexperienced De Gea could be a very expensive waste of money.

Adler and Neuer are more experienced because they are older? And with the quality in the Spanish national team's goalkeeping department, hardly De Gea's fault if he doesn't get a start, is it?

Also, what track record of taking young promising keepers do we have? Foster? Hardly of the same caliber as De Gea.

I know they're older. I was trying to point out that De Gea is extremely inexperienced and whilst Neuer and Adler are both older so more experienced when it comes to age, they are significantly more experienced when it comes to actually footballing experience.

Can you tell me the last young 'keeper we turned into anything like a good goalkeeper?

Joel is from their reserves, same age as De Dea and he's highly rated, though obviously not as highly as De Gea. I'm sure they'd view him as good enough for the #2 job, but I doubt they'd risk him as a #1 just yet.

One reason for United stepping up an interest now could be that Atletico may be considering selling Asenjo. There are rumours that Asenjo may be sold in January, there are certainly teams interested despite the fact that he's been injured since May and isn't expected to be fit until December. If they sell Asenjo, they'll fight a lot harder to keep De Gea.

As for general opinions in Spain about De Gea. Just about everyone calls him the best young keeper since Casillas and the goalkeeping coaches/critics suggest while he's not such an agile shotstopper as Casillas at a similar age he's better in the air and at controlling the area.
Mourinho on Atletico: They've got a great forward line and a kid in goal, who's unlucky enough to have the same nationality as Casillas.

You could say that about 5-6 keepers who would all start for many national teams.

MANCHESTER United are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Spain U-21 goalkeeper David De Gea from Atletico Madrid in January.

Talks are at an advanced stage after weeks of negotiations, with United expected to pay about £15m for the 20-year-old.

It was unclear last night whether De Gea would join United in January or see out the season at Atletico.

An imposing figure at almost 6ft 4ins, De Gea -- contracted until June 2013 -- was part of the Atletico team who defeated Fulham 2-1 in the Europa League final in May.

He rejected the chance to join Wigan last year.

Yeah just saw this on Twitter anyone have an online account with the Times to copy and paste the story here.

apparently its on the times too...

If it's on the Sun and perhaps the Mail too, it s a deal done....

But... we'd only sign an experienced GK they said!!

He should be the only goalkeeper we should be interested in..
