Err the figures are in our accounts and Smalling cost £10 mill, by all accounts, including SAF's. I don't get why people constantly downplay the fees we pay for players.

crazy how much people are talking about de gea when he's only played 25 games so far.

Yes but people on here weren't fapping themselves raw claiming Bebe or Smalling to be the next best thing before we signed them. With De Gea, they are.
Personally I'd rather not replace Van Der Sar with De Gea. He's be too much of a risk imo and he should be left to develop a little at home in Spain.
I'd rather see Neuer or Adler.
Yes but Bebe cost just above 4m according to president of Guimares. The 7m pounds fee has only been seen in the media with no sources.
Transfer fees are mostly just ballpark figures. People shouldn't talk about them like it's the gospel.
It's also varies in the media if they do have records of it weather they take into account the players signing on fee or contract as well because they've been known to do that just so the figure looks higher than the actual transfer fee.
Manchester United's £7.4 million summer purchase of Portuguese winger Bébé resulted in selling club Vitória de Guimarães receiving just 70 per cent of the fee, with the remaining 30 per cent being allocated to the Gestifute sports agency, who part-owned the player.
You must see the problem with this, so he plays a couple more years in Spain and everybody realises he actually is th real deal and one of the world's top keepers, then either we have to spend 30 million quid plus for him ala Juve for Buffon or Real and Barca sign him after one of their keepers starts playing a bit shit leaving us up shit creek desperately trying to find someone just as good(or stick with PIG).
Van Der Sar isn't very wide either.
But if we want him to become wider, he could always mix with the Anderson/O'Shea/Rooney pie-gang.
I've been wondering about this as well. Asenjo was supposed to be the next big thing until De Gea suddenly burst onto the scene last season. Is he still at Atletico? What ever happened to Sergio Asengo?
Won an award as best Madrid (the city) player last night pictured with the one who won the same thing 10 years ago.
Tall enough, but not very wide.

"...we have already spent £20m on young players. Chris Smalling cost us £10m, [Mame Biram] Diouf was £4m and the Mexican [Javier Hernández] was more than £6m. Because we are not signing signature players people think we are not moving forward – but we are."
What ever happened to Sergio Asengo?
I was thinking the same thing. Everybody was talking about Asenjo and how highly rated he is and then he gets himself injured. So De Gea steps up in his place and has held a spot in the first team every since.

I would still consider Adler and Neuer a bit of a gamble as they're young but in terms of experience they are miles ahead of De Gea.
Given our record of taking a young promising 'keeper and developing them i'd fear that spunking 15mil on an incredibly inexperienced De Gea could be a very expensive waste of money.
Adler and Neuer are more experienced because they are older? And with the quality in the Spanish national team's goalkeeping department, hardly De Gea's fault if he doesn't get a start, is it?
Also, what track record of taking young promising keepers do we have? Foster? Hardly of the same caliber as De Gea.
Asenjo had a shaky start to his Atletico career and it coincided with their worst start to a league in years. De Gea took his oppurtunity and hasnt looked back since. They also have another young goalkeeper who's highly rated, his name is Joél i think.
Joel is from their reserves, same age as De Dea and he's highly rated, though obviously not as highly as De Gea. I'm sure they'd view him as good enough for the #2 job, but I doubt they'd risk him as a #1 just yet.
One reason for United stepping up an interest now could be that Atletico may be considering selling Asenjo. There are rumours that Asenjo may be sold in January, there are certainly teams interested despite the fact that he's been injured since May and isn't expected to be fit until December. If they sell Asenjo, they'll fight a lot harder to keep De Gea.
As for general opinions in Spain about De Gea. Just about everyone calls him the best young keeper since Casillas and the goalkeeping coaches/critics suggest while he's not such an agile shotstopper as Casillas at a similar age he's better in the air and at controlling the area.
Mourinho on Atletico: They've got a great forward line and a kid in goal, who's unlucky enough to have the same nationality as Casillas.
