I guess you haven't met Eboue and Silva before. Whoever doesn't fully agree with them (which by default are everyone bar them and Bernie Sanders) is a cnut.
I wonder sometimes if it's the same person with different accounts .

I see they got the replies they were looking for so me no one took the bait in the McCain... Oops I mean US Politics thread.

He invented the 52 number because he usually likes to quote Rasmussen, but it was down to 46.
He likes to quote anything that suits his narrative - and usually when he does he mentions which poll he used. That he didn't quote any polls suggests he knew very well what he was doing.

It also shows Congressional Republicans now see it as their duty to protect the president rather than the constitution. Corrupt feckers.

Also can't the government do anything about the Universities charging unreasonable amounts for uni?

Probably, but they won't want to. More people being uneducated suits the Republicans down to the ground.

I've seen far too many US citizens citing, "you get what you pay for", when it comes to receiving quality education at universities. They refuse to believe that you could get an education which is just as good as, if not better, than the Ivy league schools in, for example Europe, for next to no tuition fees.

Private universities can charge what they can. Public universities are comparable to Europe for an instate student. Of course the government doesn't pay for it or give you any subsidies while you are studying to cover living expenses like they do in Europe.

Flags no longer half-mast at the Spite House, it seems.

So 5 tweets today and not one about the Florida gaming shooting, still had time to put a shout out to his golfing buddy mind (alot of things in common im sure)

No tweet from that feckwit about the Madden shooting?? That man is a disgrace. I don't understand how the 'most powerful' nation in the world are not embarrassed to have this moron at the helm?

How did they get from Barack and Michelle to this clown couple in charge so quickly?? I honestly don't get it?

Can't wait for the Mueller investigation to be concluded.

Not sure they can do anything about private universities, who typically are the most expensive ones (circa 40k for year) and with the exception of Berkeley, also the best ones.

Only Oxbridge and ETHZ are on the level of Ivy League/Stanford/MIT/Berkeley, from universities on Europe. And I think that Oxbridge have relatively high (compared to European universities) fees.

Top US universities are much better than European ones, so 'you get what you payed for' is kind of true.

Though they make up a huge proportion of the top institutions, European, Asian and Australian institutions are catching up. Five of the current top 10 in the QS ranking are outside of the US.

I've watched the online MIT undergraduate lectures for physics (mechanics) by Walter Lewin. They are the same as in any free German random University.

"Elite" Universities just pick the best graduates from elsewhere (mostly people who have studied in Europe).

How do you know this exactly?

I work on academia, and regularly meet people from pretty much all top universities, am quite interested on MOOC, and outside of my field is mostly based on reputation and lists.

Ok good. I just wasn't sure if it was an opinion based on fact or not. I went to a state uni here in CA and the standards were shocking. I've no idea what Ivy Leagues are like but it's good to know they are elite.

I am in Duke which has a decent reputation in my field but is not close to ETH/Oxford/Cambridge/MIT/UC Berkeley and especially Harvard. Yet the fees here are (AFAIK) much higher than Berkeley and slightly higher than MIT/Harvard (and of course far far higher than ETH/Oxbridge). 1-semester tuition or undergrads is $50k, which means a degree is $400000 and with living expenses that works out to more than half a million dollars. Most other pvt colleges are not *that* high but are comparable.

I don't believe the undergrad education here is substantially better than most decent European schools - say, LMU Munich. LMU is free for anyone.
But I'm sure Duke has much better dining, world-class sports facilities and celebrity coaches, great parties, TVs all over the common areas, etc.

I don't know about LMU, but I know a lot of people (both professors, PhD students and Master students) in TUM which is regarded as top university on Germany. At least on my field (AI), it is nowhere near the likes of Stanford, Berkeley or Carnegie Mellon. However, it might be the best university on continental Europe after ETHZ and possibly EPFL. The same thing can be said for most science/technology fields. About social sciences, I have absolutely no idea.

I think that the main differences from European unis and top US universities, is the number of tutors per course (it isn't uncommon for US unis to have a couple dozens tutors, compared to 1 or 2 for European universities), the PhD here being much shorter (just 3 years) and the lack of funding compared to US, in addition to industry connections being much weaker. For this reason, top students from European unis, try to go to US for PhD, but the number is still much lower than that of Indian/Chinese.

Prices for your uni seem absurd even for US.

I felt the same about my alma mater (University of Central Florida). Place felt more like an adult day care rather than a serious university.
