The not paying attention is a huge part of it imho. It's the reason he was able to win because if more had paid attention to all the crap he said during the primaries etc he would have had no chance - and also the reason his disapproval ratings don't get as bad as you might expect. I believe most folks don't start paying attention to politics until the economy tanks or something controversial gets rolled out that falls directly along party lines, and in addition is given a lot of press. Problem is that Donnie obviously keeps the press busy enough for few of the controversial things to actually stick.
I work with several folks that absolutely despise the Don but when I asked them whether them about arguably the most damning week of his presidency none really knew what was going on. Frustrating and mind boggling.
They actually did. They either agreed with it or were simply saying "He doesn't mean that literally." Or "It's just rhetoric to trigger liberals, he would never really do this." This cult following will find a way to justify anything he says or does, it's not surprising the majority of them are evangelical Christians. They are well trained in the mental gymnastics needed to accept even the vilest acts and find a way to praise them.
