But if we are honest, Trump and the current republicans are typically why someone like De Gaulle didn't want to be too linked to the US. A sort of "We are friendly but not friends".

Japan is doing quite well for themselves. They recently signed a big deal with India to build their domestic subway system and now the deal with EU, if they can get some defense contracts going with someone like Israel, they can slowly wean off America as well.

Well, to be honest, Eisenhower viewed De Gaulle as a Trump-like figure. He was worried that De Gaulle would use nukes in French Indochina, causing them to butt heads repeatedly in the 1950s.

On a serious note, I don't think that the comparison with Trump is true. When you read Eisenhower's archives, he expresses a lot of respect for De Gaulle and call him a friend, despite the fact that they didn't agree on everything.

the deal with India was based on a virtually interest free loan from Japan that covered the cost of the train line but the deal seems to have hit a few hurdles recently.

Just watching today s SHS press conference. It was more odd than usual. Like she was afraid and didn't herself even believe half the things she said. She looked extremely agitated and uncomfortable - far more than normal. What a time.
