Oh, come on! Unfamiliarity with the words of the anthem is not equivalent to a refusal to comply with the public norms of behaviour when it's being played. I'm not arguing for perfect citizens. People do what they like in pubs or shops or their own homes. But a protocol defining the conduct of those present when the anthem is played on certain public occasions has been established. Non-compliance sends a different message to mere ignorance of the words of the song!

What would you do to people who don't stand for the anthem ? Have them arrested ?

You said before, you're not pro legislation about standing for the anthem etc. So basically what you're saying is, come on, don't be a cnut, just stand for the national anthem.

In that light is it too much to ask, come one, you're the leader of the country, don't be a cnut, take a 10 minute break from golfing and memorize the words.

I commented on this last night, Raoul. Social pressure will ensure that people behave properly on such occasions. And if people are so indifferent that no such pressure exists, the society is dead anyway.

I certainly think Trump should know the words of the Star Spangled Banner. But the guy is a law onto himself.

Not at all. It's massively magnified by the fact that he is the one slagging people off about disrespecting the anthem, then goes and organises a celebration of it, where he doesn't know the words.

He's mouthing nonsense and leering during the anthem with the army standing right behind him.

And it's not the first time either. Don't forget too that he has also forgotten other protocol related to this too, i.e. hand over heart. He's frequently non-compliant and he's the president. Not only that, but a president who's made the anthem thing one of his go-to talking points. It's beyond ironic and revolting.

Come on yourself!

Seriously? You are equating to a flag code to dictatorship?
Punishing people for not respecting the flag? Let's be honest we aren't going to agree so let's not even start...

There was a jab at current American democracy there but surprise surprise you never caught it.

 Why would we disagree? If it's not a rule of law, it should not be punished.
Weren't you and Will advocating that earlier? Or were you just having a moan?

Edit: My bad, had a look and it seems you were just having a moan about society disobeying the "flag code" (the name makes me laugh) leading to anarchy. As you were...

The funny thing is that it was an event to show the NFL what real patriots were like.

This is what I keep trying to point out again and again for all those (two) who think that the players are somehow disrespecting it and Trump isn't.

It's also worth saying, again again, none of the Eagles players ever took part in taking a knee and, as per the Colbert video, Fox ran a photo of some Eagles players praying at a time nowhere near the anthem as part of their segment on it. It all stinks.

I never thought inviting someone to 'come on!' would hit a nerve. I accused a poster last night of teaching tiddlywinks and he took it on the chin. Toughen up!

On a serious note, Trump needs to learn the words of the American anthems. Yesterday.

How do you expect to accuse someone else of having a nerve hit when you've used the phrase "Oh, come on!"

I'll take this as you conceding the point, thanks.

I'll see your :rolleyes: and raise you

I never concede anything. It's part of my charm. How many women have said to me, 'I love the fact that you never make concessions, Will.'

Well, none. But the principle stands.

Literally anyone reading your posts are raising a

Flake is scheduled to make a speech on the Senate floor trashing Trump's trade war policies in a bit....so Trump seems to want to get ahead of the narrative.

Christ! If you don't agree with him you get abused badly. What an ego cnut!

Doubling down on your concession here then, I see.

It's ok to be wrong sometimes, Will. To a lot of real actual people, it might even be significantly more charming than doubling down constantly.

Believe, nothing worse than doubling down Trumpite style and pretending you're right and everyone else is wrong. Just put your hands up, own it and keep it moving.

This should make for some good news tonight since Oz was called before Congress to get berated for his quackery.
