The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

Its easy for us to be sanctimonious five decades after the fact but I bet it was very common to turn away black renters back then. It was a different era with unfortunately different attitude to many social issues.

It also sheds some light on some of his views today.

Do you know who McCarthyite Roy Cohn was? Trump's mentor since 1971.
Investigative journalist Wayne Barret who wrote a book on Trump in 1991 describes Cohn:
"Roy Cohn is the single most evil person I have ever covered. If he's a magnet for you(Trump) as a young man, that says you are soulless before you start".

Just because other racist landlords existed in the 1970s doesn't excuse Trump's extreme behavior even in the 1970s.

It's not an excuse or a defence at all. How can a racist be allowed to become President in this day and age? Things like that should ensure he not be considered or allowed to stand. Sorry there really should be a morality test and intelligence test at the very least.

He is constantly degrading and attacking people of colour and women too and any Democrat. He's promoting hate all while in the most powerful position in the world and it is being excused as a generational thing? I think It's a cop out that's all. I think people should be able to evolve and learn and I also believe there is no excuse for things like racism.

Part of the reason could be that there is a large swath of people who agree with him or are at a minimum sympathetic to his views. There have for years been a class of aging traditional whites who are contemptuous of the growing multicultural identity of the country. They grew up in a distinctly homogenous America, and are in their own unrealistically misguided ways, nostalgic for it to return. They simply see Trump as a throwback to an America they identified with when they were younger.

That I completely agree with and that is the same in many places around the world, especially here in the UK too. That doesn't excuse it at all though and as I said, people should be able to evolve.

I'm not sure he was really ever anything. He liked to associate with well-known circles and that often meant associating with major Dems (like the Clintons, rather ironically) but at the same time he's got a rather murky past when it comes to how he treats people and how he treats his workers, and incidents like the Central Park Five reveal he's probably always been a nasty piece of work, even if he did a much better job at hiding it back in the day.
Guess he has only backed the parties that could back him and his affairs.

I still wonder whether he himself is in on the whole thing.

I hate the cnut but imagine if he genuinely didn't know about it and he really genuinely thought it was a witch-hunt because of that? That would be unlivable with for me, not knowing whether you were an illegitimate President or not. Especially with his narcissism.

My understanding of narcissism is the afflicted would never be able to comprehend this view you laid out. They'll only see it one way - out to get me/my way.

Irish and don't get that at all :)
Till Death Us Do Part was a comedy sitcom back in the 70s (and the sequel Sickness And in Health) starring Warren Mitchell as All Garnet. Alf was an old school dyed in the wool rightwing bigot. The show was copied by many countries around the world and the US version was called All In the Family and had a character called Archie Bunker.

He'll be framing that photo & hanging it on the Oval Office wall, just to prove to visitors that "it's bigger than the media claimed".

I suppose it's true but either he definitely did what we think he did and he's playing up to it or he's genuinely didn't do it but other people did for him and he doesn't actually know.

I'm failing to get that he's a good enough actor to pull this off all the time but I can of course be completely wrong.

Faces POSSIBLE arrest warrant. That is not what the first Tweet said, hence why It's misleading. I have been caught out a few times myself but it is important to really check each article and the sources, especially from unverified and not well known or respected accounts.
