I think I just pissed my mom off.

She sent me a screen shot of her phone with the "Trump bans transgenders from the military" with the text message "Amen!" Attached to it

I responded "I think it's pretty stupid. If they want to serve and protect this country, I don't care what their gender is." Then sent her the picture of the Trump tweet from above where he said he'd protect their freedoms.

She's not responded yet

I heard on the radio the reasoning is they don't want to pay the bill for any of the ops that they may require

That's fair i suppose... But why don't they allow them to serve but not have to pay?

Also what happens to transgender people already in the military?

I dislike it quite a bit when the military becomes subject to "culture wars" (from either side). It is almost by definition the public service where we should be most concerned with its benefits for society vs its benefits for those who are a part of it (i.e. is a public job more important as a benefit for those employed or as a benefit to the population served?).

I really, really won't care if its "correct" or "diverse" enough if it actually has to be used (which we always hope it doesn't). Just that it is effective. The only situation where I would be concerned about makeup besides effectiveness would be its ability to remain non-political.
 
Trump getting slammed on Fox who are massively backing Jeff Sessions, even Tucker "two faces" Carlson defending Jeff and attacked Trump. Surprisingly they are also attacking Trump for his stance on Transgender military personnel. He's also getting shit from the Pentagon who knew nothing of this announcement until he Tweeted it. His head of the military, Mattis, is on holiday this week too, so it's strange how Trump announced it instead of him, and why he wasn't involved. Has he just gone behind another of his Generals backs and cut their legs out from underneath them?

Feck me, he's making some enemies again, all ones supposed to be on his side though. Is this the definition of insanity?

Under the old rule, the Pentagon banned transgender troops from openly serving. If they revealed their transgender identity, they could be kicked out or denied reenlistment solely on that basis.

So, depending on how long they've got...some will be allowed to finish up and denied reenlistment. Others will be fired.
 
Just had a little e-fight with what I presume to be Trump supporters on reddit. These people have no morality and cannot be reasoned with. It's really quite scary. Up until now I've somewhat understood what it meant to be a republican, respecting the constitution, small-government etc. But this is a whole-new, retarded, beast.

Yes...but the military has also many things to help change the mentality of people. You don't think hundreds of thousands of small town kids going back home and thinking to themselves, hey...those black fellas fighting alongside me and dying, aren't actually that different to me' helped to slowly turn the tide?

Once you've ensured this doesn't adversely effect the running of the military - I don't know why it couldn't become the subject of 'cultural wars'.

*As many have already stated - Trump is a douchebag - but he isn't alone on this...a lot of senior military brass have expressed their reservations and have been asking for things to be slowed down, delayed - some as long as another 2 years.
 
More importantly, slipped into those three tweets he talks about "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming Victory"

Against who exactly?

He just loves fighting like this. To be hated. He has always been an outsider in NYC.
So it drives him to prove everyone wrong.

That's why he gets along with Bannon too.

And the media must be equally focused on big issues and not get distracted by this latest Trump edict. There are issues affecting millions that need attention.

Plus, the next president (hopefully someone else of course) will return to Obama's law and this will all go away.
 
Crazy move. Such a backwards thing to do. You'd expect that from a country like North Korea, Russia, African dictatorships etc. but the U.S. is supposed to be the land of the free. It's fecking wrong.

Funnily enough my mate from Denver was in Carolina a month or so back for a wedding. My goal is to visit every state but it's gonna be a long time down the road I reckon!!

New analysis shows that the costs Huckabee alluded to won't be much at all.

Aaron Belkin, a professor of political science at San Francisco State University, told Reuters that transition care for transgender members of the United States military would cost around $5.6 million—an amount he called "little more than a rounding error," considering the military's total expenditure. The $5.6 million sum breaks down to $0.22 per service member per month.

Belkin arrived at his conclusion by estimating how many closeted transgender people currently serve, and examining the precedent set by Australia, which already funds transgender-related care. The surgery and hormone therapy often included in transition care for transgender individuals can run around $30,000 over the course of several years. Belkin predicts that about 188 service members would receive such care. The prevalence of transgender individuals in the military is twice as high as in the general population—a fact that might be attributable to "many transgender women - those born male but identifying as female - seek[ing] to prove to themselves that they are not transgender by joining the military and trying to fit into its hypermasculine culture," Belkin told Reuters.

The analysis is noteworthy because in July, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter expressed his support of transgender individuals serving openly in the military; he asked a working group to examine the issue with the presumption that transgender people can serve openly without adverse effect.

Many corporations—one-third of Fortune 500 companies—offer transgender-inclusive healthcare. Early data on the city of San Francisco's coverage of transgender-related healthcare showed that the benefit was not all that costly, which helped it go mainstream.
