The Remake Draft

Gentlemen...let's keep it civil, eh?

All of this may - and will - be discussed when the matches roll around. I appreciate that it's tempting to comment and criticize - it's the nature of the thing. But - again - save it for the match threads: In this particular draft, discussing a player's suitability for Role X will be the very focus of the match debates - so everyone will get ample opportunity to present their cases there and then.

Weird criticisms - for me Henry looks about a good as fit as any based on the limited information available on Labruna. It's not like anyone here has seen him play actual matches so I'm not sure what DavidG could provide in terms of tangible comparisons.

From a quick google it looks like Labruna possessed similar attributes to Henry and operated from an inside left position as a pacy goalscorer. Seems a good fit IMO.

fixed it for you ;)

Trust you to miss the point!

@Chesterlestreet Yeah, sorry. For what its worth, having spoke to @DavidG via PM, he isn't actually that touchy and I'm starting to get the impression that he could be a good addition to these drafts!

Good to hear - and no worries, some degree of debate and disagreement is obviously inevitable as the players get unveiled here, can't be avoided, really. Just as long as we keep it at a minimum: It's particularly important in this one, since it's an experiment of sorts, and - again - discussions about suitability will be the bread and butter of the matches (at least that's what I predict).

Really surprised about harms decision to replace Litmanen first. I'd have thought Rijkaard (unique) and Blind (sweeper being obsolete nowadays) as being more difficult to replace positions. The AM/SS hybrid imo is one position with abundance of players nowadays.

Trust you to miss the point!

Okay mate

Well given your extensive knowledge of 1940's Argentinian football I'm Looking forward to the matches anyway, when you can tell us all more about how Henry isn't a good tactical fit for Labruna.

Thought so too before I began to establish the strategy. I'd prefer not to talk about potential replacements for those players though as it can influence the drafting process.

I don't think it's about tactical fit or not, but more on DavidG quoting goals ratio as one of reasons for fit.

It was quite clearly a tongue in cheek remark commenting on the uncanny resemblance of their goalscoring records. He's quite clearly given some solid rationale as to why he believes Henry would have been a good fit for the Labruna role - dynamic, skillful, pacy player able to make penetrating runs in behind defence ( normally from the left hand side) but also equally adept at being involved in the playmaking build up).

So let's not potentially overblow a minute issue (if you could call it one) and get the drafting back on track :)

Be quiet.

I don't even know who Labruna is for what its worth! I'v explained to the @DavidG what my point was - I was expecting him to provide more in depth comparison between the players he chose (more than GPG and position) following his criticism of Ronaldinho (and his suitabilty to effectively replace his equivalent). I have been told to keep an eye on the match thread (as @Chesterlestreet prefers).

"Giovanni Ferrari (6 December 1907 – 2 December 1982), an Italian football (soccer) player, played as a midfielder and as an inside forward on the left. He is regarded as one of the best players of his generation, one of Italy's best ever players, and as one of the greatest players of all time, having won the Serie A a record 8 times, as well as two consecutive FIFA World Cup titles (in 1934 and 1938) with the Italy national football team.[1] [2]

A creative, advanced midfield playmaker, Ferrari was a strong, physically fit, hardworking, versatile, and well-rounded footballer, as well as being a generous team player. Due to his technical ability, vision, tactical intelligence, and passing ability, he excelled at building attacking plays and creating chances for team-mates, although he was also capable of scoring himself due to his powerful and accurate shot."

My point was that you could more than likely pen a similar paragraph relating to Ronaldinho and his equivalent (and I was getting the impression that the poster was implying that the Ronaldinho pick wasn't a good one), which I found a bit hypocritical.

All cleared up now.

Such a pity Rivaldo and Del Piero missed the cut on this one. Would've been excellent fit for the Meazza role :(

Was sure that Gio would pick him - it's at the same time the most obvious and the best pick.

Simply unique player in the given pool.

Aye. Rivaldo could fill a lot of roles in this draft, such is the depth of magical support strikers managers are attempting to replicate.

Thierry Henry/ Angel Labruna.

During my research for these two, I noticed one uncanny stat.

Labruna with river plate averaged 0.62 goals per game
Henry with Arsenal averaged 0.61 goals per game

Tell me who I'm talking about. A dynamic, skillful, pacy player able to make penetrating runs in behind defence ( normally from the left hand side) but also eqaully adept at being involved in the playmaking build up. An ice cold finisher who benefitted from having one of the games all time great support strikers feeding them with passes and linking up play. This holds true for Labruna and Pedernera as much as it does for Henry and Bergkamp.

I just made him an option for the Stoichkov role on the left. :( Back to drawing board.

Yeah I had him as my first option and couldn't believe he made it down to me. Possibly the fact he's currently still playing and people have been going for the more romantic option. I personally rate him just as highly as most of the players picked already and one of the few players that can add everything required to a position and then more on top.

I considered him for possibly 2 positions, but Ferrari's one was probably the toughest to come up and probably no alternative to Seedorf (in terms of quality and similarity). Anyway top pick.
