The Remake Draft

I think he did few times, the one game I remember was against Scotland where he scored 2. But more importantly I think he got the right skillset.

EDIT: “We could have played Villa as a main striker,” said Spanish boss Vicente del Bosque. “But instead we opted for Silva as a false number nine, as Messi plays for Barca. Against Scotland, we wanted a smaller forward to deal with their big guys and it worked out well. Silva played to the level expected of him and it showed there is plenty of choice. It does not mean we will always play Silva as a false nine, but it is an option.”
Aye, good to know. Didn't recall him playing in that position before.

Mario Corso = Wide playmaker, can play on left wing but drifts to central positions, extremely creative, got great dribbling and passing abilities = David Silva

Deep forward -
Between Silva and Pirlo, we don’t really need a deep forward who’s going to unlock opposing defenses with his passes. Instead, we’ll go for one who can cause havoc with his runs, drawing defenders out of position then finishing himself or finding the open man with simple balls back or across the goal. Sandro Mazzola in Herrara's grande Inter was a hard working second striker, often the highest scorer of the team and once of the entire Serie A in 64-65. In Tevez we have some one who is equally hard working and prolific, but probably more importantly gives the team same ball carrying abilities from the deep with his drive and dribbling.

Holger Badstuber

Again, in the words of Loius Van Gaal, the man behind the team: «In modern soccer the players in the middle of the back four - the numbers 3 and 4 - have really become the playmakers. That's why Blind is, and Rijkaard was, so important to Ajax. The number 10, behind the strikers, certainly can't be called a playmaker, because the space in which he operates is too restricted»

Danny Blind was a great player - tough as nails but also a cultured passer; he and Rijkaard were responsible for delivering the ball from defence to attack. I had to pick someone very unique on his place - and I’m glad that that someone already has a proven partner in Javi Martinez. Badstuber’s career is full of injuries - 2 cruciate ligament injuries, a muscle tear, a broken ankle… With such luck he won’t be able to achieve what was expected from him since the very young age.

"If Badstuber is fit and in proper condition, he will always play for me," said Louis Van Gaal to Bild. "He is the best left-footed defender in Germany. Jogi Loew has confirmed this because he always nominates him [for the Germany national team]." Like Muller, Badstuber benefited from Van Gaal’s faith in youth - if he is good enough, he is young enough. At the age of 21 he established himself as a starter and an integral member of one of the best club sides in Europe. It’s hard to imagine a defender with more inventive passing, which is the main requirement for №3 in Van Gaal’s Ajax system. At some point last season Bayern released a video from the training, just a few weeks after Badstuber’s return from the injury. «Badstuber, I love you!», shouts Guardiola sincerely - and it’s speaks volumes when two of the biggest «philosophers» in today’s football really fell in love with him

Marking opposition wingers is always a tough job, especially at the highest level. Attilio Ferraris close to a century ago was assigned that uneasy task. It's hard to find a quality wide players in the defensive phase nowadays, as most of them are effectively wingers.

So we have to look back a bit - Willy Sagnol. Strong, physical defender (like the Italian team in 1934), with great technique when it comes to long passes and crosses. Started his career as right midfielder, versatile enough to provide support in both phases and solid defensively makes him a great fit and new addition to the team.

@NoPace is probably Spanish :wenger:

That's if he's not injured by the time your match kicks off :wenger:

Sebastian Deisler suffered from injuries... and a terrible depression.

Rio and Terry is the classic sweeper-stopper combination. It's extremely similar to Rio-Vidic and Terry-Carvalho. The reason it wasn't perfect for England was because they were playing behind a dysfunctional midfield and Lampard-Gerrard offered no protection. With Nobby Stiles' replacement and a very hard working midfield overall, they won't have that issue here.

The major issue with that combination is Rio is not as influential in possession as Moore. Realistically though, that England team was a relatively defensive one that soaked up pressure and Moore's defensive qualities were more important than his attacking qualities. So someone like Ferdinand is a better fit than someone like Ramos, IMO.

1. Raymond Domenech (2004-2010) & Jacques santini (2002-2004) were poor tacticians like some of your former England NT managers.

If my memories are good, it was ridiculous to also have Scholes as a wide-midfieder.

2. Sure, Ferdinand is an excellent choice as a ball-playing CB
