Obviously it's hard to replicate what Meazza brought to the 1934 team and even moreso to find a player that would resemble his role on the pitch, but also bring his goalscoring touch, versatility, dribbling and vision.

Anyhow Meazza's role in that 1934 team was more of an attacking(modern day #10 role ) withdrawn forward role. He had the vision to set up his team mates, but also was the one to score important goals (against Spain to put Italy through). He had a bit of a more free role(like Orsi and Schiavio) and was one of the most gifted players at the time.

I won't be able to replicate the player, but in terms of role - score important goals, link up, set up his team mates and of course bring that special sauce that Meazza had in him I think the closest we can go here is:

@Gio

I'm a bit wary of Rio/Terry partnership. It's like people arguing Beckenbauer / Baresi partnership will be awesome. Terry and Carvalho worked, so I think this should be OK.

?

Rio and Terry is the classic sweeper-stopper combination. It's extremely similar to Rio-Vidic and Terry-Carvalho. The reason it wasn't perfect for England was because they were playing behind a dysfunctional midfield and Lampard-Gerrard offered no protection. With Nobby Stiles' replacement and a very hard working midfield overall, they won't have that issue here.

The major issue with that combination is Rio is not as influential in possession as Moore. Realistically though, that England team was a relatively defensive one that soaked up pressure and Moore's defensive qualities were more important than his attacking qualities. So someone like Ferdinand is a better fit than someone like Ramos, IMO.

Like what @Brwned is doing with his side. Slight worry is that Gerrard, Cole & Terry are arguably the 3 most hated players on the caf. Hope it doesn't go against him (quite sure it won't though)

I think the biggest concern there is Gerrard being Charlton's replacement. It won't sit well with many! It doesn't sit perfectly with me either. I genuinely don't think there's any player in the last two decades that has his combination of qualities. Kaká has the elegance, direct dribbling, powerful shots and vision but he's a complete passenger in midfield which, despite Charlton humbly suggesting otherwise*, is a fairly significant difference. Charlton and Beckenbauer never gave each other an inch in that final.

There were only two other players I'd considered for the role - Scholes and Lampard. Both have the goals, the passing, the work-rate but the athleticism just isn't there, they couldn't carry the ball with long drives forward. Gerrard lacks the elegance but he has everything else. Spectacular goals, fantastic passing range, endless running, vital contributions in key games and the proven ability to play in any midfield position, including out wide. The versatility is important because that was a very fluid midfield and all 3 players in front of Stiles did have to be comfortable right across the pitch.

* Bobby Charlton: "Errr, I was a bit of a coward. I didn't always go where angels fear to tread. No. If I was asked to tackle somebody, by the time I made my mind up it was too late."

I need a man with a golden head.

Again, @Theon @Annahnomoss, maybe we should restrict ourselves from talking about the player roles as it clearly influences the manager's strategy?

I'm not going to give you the name, but you should look at the use of the false 9 in the latest international tournaments (2010 and so on), there is a player who is perfect for you stylistically

I don't think we are - although there are at least 2 players who fit the bill

By mentioning a specific competition, we could say you may influence the strategy of EAP. :p

Except that I didn't. There were 2 World Cups, 1 European championship, 2 Copa Americas, nevermind African or Asian competitions in that period

I know mate. ;)

I have to take the time to look at the Asian competitions: I will look at the 2010 Asian Games.

If my next pick is an Asian player, everyone has to know you are the mastermind !

Kocsis you would think.

I didn't know Kocsis was called the 'Golden Head'. Perfect substitution.

Oliver Bierhoff (1968) is unavailable but was so impressive on the air.

One of my preferred strikers.

if we're thinking of the same one there's no way he'll make it to EAP. There are couple of managers that would take him.

I got around 85 players as a shortlist initially and only 15 are left unpicked. I suspect they will be picked by the time my turn comes in so it will be interesting last 3 picks.

Despite being recognised as one of the greatest river plate players of all time, Juan Carlos Munoz still somewhat lagged behind in the star appeal of his fellow attackers. Glued to the right wing, Munoz provided Pace, unbelievable close dribbling and an ability to get in behind the defence. Giuly was the star at Monaco, but at Barcelona ( despite conistently brilliant performances on the right wing) he simply wasn't as glamorous as Ronaldinho, Eto'o et al. He is unfortunately best remembered for being the man who lost his place to Lionel Messi. Hard to argue thats a bad thing though.

Also, love finding little similarities like this. Both players made exactly 184 appearances for the club they spent the most years at.

Ludovic Giuly

Theo Walcott

Sadly, it's time to pick suitable players and not my personal favorites. In his early days Theo Walcott was labeled a "carbon copy of Overmars" by Arsenal fans. The resemblance is uncanny - both possessed incredibly pace, great dribbling skills and, despite both being originally very traditional wingers, a strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time. Of course, Walcott failed to achieve the same level of consistency as the great Dutchman but style-wise, especially when we talk about the young Walcott and not today's version of wannabe striker, they are very similar

Is Riquelme in Platini's role?

Don't worry, I will explain later in details my choices & the diverse options I have considered.

I don't see the modern equivalent of Platini because he was unique: a playmaking-attacking midfielder really all over the pitch.

Riquelme: the bench or the #10 position because:

Mario Corso = Wide playmaker, can play on left wing but drifts to central positions, extremely creative, got great dribbling and passing abilities = David Silva

Deep forward -
Between Silva and Pirlo, we don’t really need a deep forward who’s going to unlock opposing defenses with his passes. Instead, we’ll go for one who can cause havoc with his runs, drawing defenders out of position then finishing himself or finding the open man with simple balls back or across the goal. Sandro Mazzola in Herrara's grande Inter was a hard working second striker, often the highest scorer of the team and once of the entire Serie A in 64-65. In Tevez we have some one who is equally hard working and prolific, but probably more importantly gives the team same ball carrying abilities from the deep with his drive and dribbling.

@harms David Silva was the one I was thinking about for Laudrup's false number 9 role in EAP team, were you thinking of someone else ?

Has he ever played as false 9? For Spain he was on the right/left wing and Fabregas was the one in that false 9 position.

I'm thinking of someone still unpicked. Tevez and Persie also fitted into the description.

I think he did few times, the one game I remember was against Scotland where he scored 2. But more importantly I think he got the right skillset.

EDIT: “We could have played Villa as a main striker,” said Spanish boss Vicente del Bosque. “But instead we opted for Silva as a false number nine, as Messi plays for Barca. Against Scotland, we wanted a smaller forward to deal with their big guys and it worked out well. Silva played to the level expected of him and it showed there is plenty of choice. It does not mean we will always play Silva as a false nine, but it is an option.”
