RE: Hargreaves, England's major issue with the "golden generation" was trying to fit 4 world class players into the same midfield. Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard and Beckham. It was overkill. They took steps to address that in 2006 which resulted in Hargreaves being named England's best player in the tournament and player of the year, but Eriksson still tried to fit Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham into the same team. Too many personalities and not enough cohesion.
Alf Ramsey figured out 40 years earlier that they had to take a different approach. Stiles, Ball and Peters all sacrificed themselves to provide a platform for Charlton to work from. The strikers played tough, selfless roles stretching the game and pressing from the front. Hunt was one of the most popular players in the country and a legendary goalscorer but he was used as a workhorse. Greaves was benched. Peters and Ball covered every blade of grass right across the pitch.
If that England team had figured that out, it's entirely possible they would've been the first team since '66 to win a tournament. The defence was undeniably world class. The midfield and forward line had some of the best players in their history. They just couldn't find the system to make it work and the players to slot into the system. Ramsey's already provided a system that works for me and there's now a rock-solid spine to build around. I just need the "shuttlers" to fit around that core - not Scholes, Lampard and Beckham, but the relentless energy of Alan Ball and the intelligence of Martin Peters, and the selflessness of them both.
