The Media and their treatment of Raheem Sterling | Agrees new 5 year deal

Absolutely disgraceful the way the sun are carrying on. About time that paper was canned for good.

Apparently Jordan Pickford has a tattoo of a dagger... wouldn't that be easier to magically link to stabbings?

He'll deserve criticism if someone can show a concrete link between his tattoo and someone specifically shooting someone BECAUSE of his tattoo. Otherwise, it's weird, pointless, and in some cases racist. Keep in mind that the U.K is one of those societies that glorify their military, a group of professional killers who shoot people with guns, and that doesn't apparently cause any crime, so why should a tattoo be an issue?

Also, as an aside, I personally think guns are cool as feck. I loved going shooting with my dad's mate, got to fire an M16 a few times which I believe is the gun in Sterling's tattoo. I have also never shot anyone, have no desire to shoot anyone, and think gun based crime deserves serious punishment. This is bullshit hysteria and nothing more.

Has anyone seen the twitter discussion between Gary Linekar and Piers Morgan on this. The comments below, someone removed the cannons from the arsenal badge. Then someone comments they can’t be called Arsenal either so that’s removed then it just keeps on going.

Anyway media and people making problems where there really aren’t any.

The Sun is racist, it's a racist newspaper. It's lowest common denominator sensationalist horrible 'journalism'.

Just a side note; circulation figures for The Sun in 2008 were 3 million. This year they're 1.5 million.

I'm really f*cking looking forward to 2028.

Some of these incredibly rich guys that are getting victimised should club together and pay some private eye to dig up some shit on these newspaper hacks and then get it all published.

Doesn't surprise me, loads of places offer free ones, they'd have to pay me to read that crap. With the internet and all that newspapers will disappear over time and the sun will be the first to go.

When you see all the headlines about Sterling one after the other it becomes pretty undeniable that there's a tabloid vendetta against him. What I don't understand is why. Football has made many young black men rich and famous, so why go so vociferously after Sterling? I guess maybe it's a narrative thing. The things he's doing (shopping in Primark etc) are so mundane that you can only turn it into a story off the back of other articles.

Sterling should band together with football mates, launch a website and start following tabloid "journalists" around.

Sky sports apologising for adding the word again

More so obviously apologising it was noticed

SSN are such as embarrassment these days. What on earth happened to them...

11 pages? He doesn't even play for us and has played for both of our biggest enemies, why do so many care? Is the inference that the Sun are picking on him because he's black?

Aren't most of the press Liverpool fans? Seems that most of the pundits are, so who knows.
That could explain why they are attacking him in particular because of the way he left them.

Not that much, he was usually moaned at for his hair at best, Sterling can't go shopping or for food without being mocked for his choice of store.
It was the same sort of old man wagging the finger stuff though, I just don't see why people are so triggered about it, unless they think racism is the motive.

To be honest racism does seem like the issue here as their vilification of him is not only bizarre but unwarranted.

Why him though? It's not like he's the only black player in the league, I mean conversely I don't think I've read a negative article about Rashford, he's been praised for humble life choices in some cases. For Sterling I think it started with the fact he didn't seem to know what a condom was for, and then his attitude towards Liverpool when he forced the City move, that began the picture of him as this irresponsible football brat and it's went from there.

Moreno got that tattoo last year and not one bit of outrage about it.

He had one child at the time. One.

Wasn't he pretty much a kid himself at the time of the first one? That's always going to draw attention for irresponsiblity, and wasn't that also around the time he had two assault charges on different women? Sometimes this behaviour creates a stigma that is hard to shake when you are in the public eye and we live in a society that eats up celebrity sensationalism..

I don't understand how they can get away with it. And doing it to an integral England player eve of the world cup doesn't make any sense.

Sterling's history of having previously assaulted two women, should really not be factored into the reaction against his choice of displaying an inked gun on his body today.

Saying that, any sane person person should know not do to have a fecking gun tattoed on your leg, especially if you're a 'loaded' (excuse the pun) professional footballer. Whether he likes it or not he will always be under the scrutiny of the public eye and must accept that with his privileges comes a certain and neccessary responsibility.
The black community are fighting hard to eradicate the ever escalating black on black crime and Sterling's poor choice unfortunately does nothing to help in the good fight against the glorified violence of 'gangsta' subculture.
This is neccessarily a race sensitive issue and Raheem needs to grow up and become sensitised to his status. If he his not willing to do this then his career could take a downward spiral. Lets hope he gets good advise from his club. (Though it hardly helps his case that his club is City, owned by the UAE who along with Qatar, really don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to ethics).
The Sun is rightly nicknamed the scum and is playing that horrible game of borderline racism. The wording is carefully scripted so's not to appear blatantly racist but nonetheless they are targetting Raheem to stir up hatred in it's reactionary readers and that in itself is racially motivated and should be challenged in court.

God knows the club's owners are so swimming in oil money that they are probably the only club who could afford to take on the Sun and more than likely win. Unfortunately for Raheem their own record regarding the ill treatment of migrant workers ( as recorded by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch) would be highlighted ( not at all what they want) if they were to challenge the Sun's campaign on the grounds of racism.

Well he's probably the most high profile black player in the Enlgand team especially because he dared to show ambition beyond the media darling that is Liverpool. Race is definitely a huge factor here. Like you said, Rashford is praised for being "humble" but that's only according to the standards the media holds him to. Sterling's treatment on the other hand is all about condemning him for being ambitious and stepping out of his lane. He's definitely a better player after leaving Liverpool but that's not the focus for the media - it's all about his lifestyle choice etc. Like how does it matter if he doesn't know how to use a condom or other irrelevant personal stuff? That's not worth the pointed criticism he receives. English football has had personalities and players who have done far worse than him.

The boxer Joe Louis earned white America's tatty approval by being humble (i.e. 'knowing his place') whereas Ali told them "I don't have to be who you want me to be". Seriously, who the f*ck would want the grudging approval of oppressors and idiots like them?

The Sun are obviously a joke.

And so is this stupid story.

I don’t see the link to racism whatsoever though. There is zero evidence of that.

Get the feck over yourselves.

I can't believe that fecking scumbag of a paper are using Damilola Taylor's dad to further their agenda. It's completely outrageous.

You'd think Sterling got a tattoo of a gang sign.

It's an M16 assault rifle. Tell me of any gangs in London who use them? A lot of the weapons gangs use have been modified to fire rounds ffs.

Sterling probably only heard of an M16 on Call of Duty 4 or something. It's a shite tattoo, not cause it's offensive but cause it fecking shit looking.
