The Media and their treatment of Raheem Sterling | Agrees new 5 year deal

Well for one thing, chief, the press has form for this kind of treatment; another, in this Brexit-dominated era, hints that black or foreign players are earning big money while the rest of 'us' struggle find a ready readership.

I see what you're saying- but I'm unsure on that one personally. I do agree with you that the story helps in relating with Brexit & can cause some sort of reaction with the public.

There's a lot of narrow mindedness that rely on the media to tell them how to think or feel.

It's a slightly more sophisticated and modern version of the age-old resentment about black people being 'uppity' by having money, driving expensive cars, having lifestyles that differ from the perceived & actual norm, refusing to know their place etc etc.

This was about the time I stopped reading newspapers.
This one baffles me. It's easy to think of media as this faceless entity, but at the end of the day a human (debatable) being actually took the time to create the abomination above, seemingly without stopping once or twice to think about whether this is a good idea or not. How does a person lacking so much tact, dignity, and common sense function in everyday life?

They've been absolute arseholes to Sterling ever since (maybe even before) he had the gall and the audacity to move to a better team for better money. There are, in my opinion, definite racist undertones to the coverage of Sterling - he even got pages of shit for buying his mother a house for feck sake, the horrible flash bastard.

The media is uncomfortable with black sport personalities and would give anything to tear them down -- see Tiger Woods, Lebron, Drogba, Terrel Owens, Allen Iverson etc

We'd all probably accept the odd story about us In the papers if we were on millions a year and were super well known faces. It unfortunately goes with the territory.
In a decade he'll most likely be able to live an anonymous life out of the public eye, unless he ends up penniless. The papers love those riches to rags stories.

I'm not going to sift through the logic of your post too far, but your first example,Tiger Woods sort of gave a massive reason for papers to get after him!

Shops at Primark!!!
another sly dig, wonder where the white English players shop

He's one City player who I want to do well(in an England shirt more than a City shirt for obvious reason) just because of the absolutely horrific abuse he has got from the newspapers.

Excuse the ignorance, but what kind of store is Primark? Not from the UK.

Bit stupid if that's a dig. What does it matter, or what relevance is it, where one shops for clothes.

It's very cheap basically.

Not my favorite player ever (exciting football skills though), but seriously those abuse of him by the press (obv not all) is sickening. He seems not to be affected that much by it which is good.

Budget clothing, value for money, and they carry knock-off versions of designer clothes. Lovingly often called “Primani” by bargain hunters, they’re a bit like Aldi for clothes.

Aargh, thanks skills. Stupid article then. If he shops somewhere expensive, he'd be labelled spoilt/flashy/wasteful. If he shops somewhere cheap, he's ridiculed because he earns a high salary. Stupid.

it happens to him regularly, he was shopping in a cheap pastry shop a few months back and that was all over the press, basically the story was, he pays £3m for a mansion and eats at greggs what sort of millionaire does that

Thanks EZ. Knock off's allowed in the UK? Or do they just, as you mentioned - "change the name" a bit?

Yeah, that's ridiculous. Imagine buying cheap clothes or eating at a cheap place because....you know....you like the clothes/food. It should be a positive that he'd rather spend some money on something as important as a house etc.

But anyway, I haven't been following this thread. Why is he seemingly such an easy target for the media?

Do you think this is an issue of race? I’m not coming down either side of the fence on this, I just think it’s interesting, he’s been treated awfully by the press but I never saw it as being due to his race.

They’re knock-offs in the same way that Zara’s clothes are. Not exact replicas of high-end designers but very much “inspired by” them.

feck is he doing trying to save money? Surely, if you're earning 180k a week, you should be spending at least 170k as soon as it's in the bank.

We used to have a primark in our local shopping center and it was the worst shop around. Cheap, yeah. But packed, and, quite literally, clothes were all over the floor.

Same. It’s constant and he’s done nothing to deserve it.

To be fair this particular article is ok. Bit pointless but nothing sinister and strangely complimentary if anything. The mirror far from the worst culprit

Not sure what the issue is with the Primark article. Obviously some people will be interested in where he shops given what he earns. It's not a personal attack on Sterling nor is it racist.

I really hate when people throw racism in when it's nothing to do with it. Kind of devalues what it actually is.

Daily Star and Daily Mirror maybe aren't the beat examples of media tbh
