SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

That's every Friday isn't it?

Think it is daily, but i thought it was at various times. It details the new amount of cases. At the minute we know there's been 3, but as there was a jump of 30 odd yesterday it would be surprising if that's all.

They have put back the official update to later this afternoon, having a worrying feeling there could be some big figures about to be announced and hopefully not but possibly some confirmed deaths.

Maybe they are holding back through the worry of mass panic a single death could cause.

@Dumbstar - have they actually confirmed coronavirus?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes it was officially confirmed as positive covid19 this morning. Obviously they only tell us when news leaks. Most of us found out online earlier this morning.

The victim called the bosses on Sunday that it was a positive result so obviously the floor was being deep cleaned since Monday I guess. All floor co workers told to work from home. Probably too late for me to wfh now. If I was to get it then then it will already have happened.

At least Niall won't have to kick me out in the summer. It was nice knowing you all. Except @TheReligion. Hehe

There was an interesting post by a doctor in public health on reddit yesterday which raised a good point. The air quality and smoking rate in China is much higher than average, which has resulted in extremely poor lung health for the general Chinese public. This is likely to have increased their death rate about what the rest of the world would have

That doesn't account for the death rate seen so far in Italy though.

Any idea how he/she was infected?

RIP :(

Aren't Italians good smokers?
I doubt majority of those oldies dying are smokers, at last here in Portugal there is a much lower prevalence of smoking in older people. Can't say that is the situation in Italy though.

No gossip yet.

Just seen this on the been:
A member of staff who travelled to China was diagnosed over the weekend with the illness, the bank said.

Why don't these guys follow instructions and quarantine themselves even if they don't see symptoms?

I'm in the Barclays building - hopefully the victim used the Jubilee and not the DLR......

There is a zero chance Sanders loses the elections if he survives the primaries.

I'd actually say there is a zero chance he loses the primaries if he's in play for a few more weeks. Which he is, isn't?
Well you can get your money back 15 times from betfair.

But, all of your analysis at the moment is just emotional, not analytical. And therefore really bad.

115 now in the UK. Still under some semblance of control.

I wouldn't call it an analysis though

I take theJubilee but now I'm taking the DLR. What time do you normally leave work? You'll recognise me as the excessive fake cougher. I think I'll wear my HSBC pass around my neck clearly showing as well.

:) Maybe that is my point. You are smart and not idiot with numbers and probabilities like most of the people. So I am a bit harsher on you than others.

How long does the virus have to be in your system before the tests can pick it up, is this known?

Heard a contradicting point from a virology podcast about how death rate is directly related to treatment recieved and China is much better equipped to deal with this than other countries, they have previous. Which means their death rate may be lower than elsewhere.

On the plus side you might win the award for first Caf member to get infected and get that coveted custom title.

There have been many conflicting reports and theories. There are many factors such as the fact that the virus had been spreading in Wuhan for longer than any other City - hence the increased number of cases. Overcrowdedness in China due to the sheer number of people visiting a medical center at one time.

Theres absolutely no surprise as to why Wuhan is still the most affected City on the earth and I can't see that changing. We had the super spreader here (UK) on the 31st of January and have only seen a total of 115 cases since. That is very good news, so far.

Only when restrictions are applied to areas closer to us, we discover the pains. If it's China, we just throw out draconian measures to contain the disease, don't we?

Honestly, I'm not politcally well informed nor do I pay enough attention to what's going on around me with respect to that topic. I've no issue with the country or their people. That said, I've always said that if the plan is to stop spread, we had to stop people from leaving and entering China for a short period of time. It was the only way.

I'd have advocated the same no matter where the outbreak came from.

So far it's 115 cases in a country of 66 million and 99% of those 115 people will likely fully recover after 1/2 weeks. Is that about right?

Some guy at my work just returned from northern Italy and has come straight back in after a 3 day work from home period.

And about 17,900 tested negative and were either totally fine or just had an ordinary bug / flu.

So 18k is a drop in the ocean out of 66 million. Lets not play it down and see how the next few weeks go. Fingers crossed it's not too bad.

Considering that's all Liverpool are winning this season I'll take it. The odds have been cut as people from two more floors are scrambling to IT to get remote working tokens urgently. Apparently they're being evacuated too. Not official news.

Avoid him like the plague. Get it? Like the plague!

But seriously he should work at home for 2 weeks, can you kick up a fuss with your boss?

If they could hold off evacuating people until I leave and get home it would be much appreciated :)

I was thinking maybe a drink beforehand where you could take one for the Cafe and explain to me why the 99 team was so great. With fists if necessary. I'm sure you'd even get paid for it. :p
