SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

In my head, the flag carriers like BA, Emirates, Quantas, etc have billions to spare. Maybe not though.

I heard BA may be bailed out or nationalised. Yes the middle East airlines would probably survive so would Air China and Aeroflot. Singapore Airlines would survive too. The government owned airlines can survive in the rich countries.

Anyone noticed how odd the Iranian ‘new deaths’ figure has looked? I know it’s widely suspected they’re falsifying the numbers, but their new death have been pretty stagnant for the last 7 day, roughly between 100-150

Air France are probably going to be nationalized, when asked about it a few days ago the PM said that they will have to talk about it with other shareholders.

I think the big ones will be fine. I think they also have cargo divisions which make them a lot of money - and that will continue. The cheaper oil prices will also be welcome.

Why should they be falsifying the numbers? They already have over 1650 deaths and over 20,000 reported infected. They probably have more deaths that's not reported due to lack of testing.

It wouldn't surprise me if a combination of poor testing, inadequate medical services and sheer amount of time has led to a level of herd immunity there.

The real figures are probably much higher than those reported. But if we can assume that underreporting is due to a lack of facilities rather than government intervention, this might be positive news for them.

They'd still only be halfway through the crisis, mind you, but hopefully it's a peek of light at the end of the tunnel.

So that's 327 deaths a week on average from influenza while people go about their normal routines. We've had around 100 deaths in the last 7 days while having unprecedented social exclusion measures, as well as media exposure of the virus for 3 months.

What's your point? Most countries are just experiencing the beginnings of the outbreak, look at what's happening in Italy if you want to get an idea where this is apparently heading.

11 Iranian national athletes have died from covid according to Radio Farda. The government has banned the announcements but the radio said they have confirmed.
WHO says the number infected and dead in Iran is going to be much higher than reported because they are not able to test and neither verify the cause of death right now. If and when they can get more testing it is going to rise a lot more.

The thing is though that you have to take the amount of people who get it into account. If 40 % of the global population ends up inflected and 0.05 % of those die then you're still looking at burying 1.5 million people.

600,000 people on the UK are estimated to die each year. The key question is how many additional people is the virus killing?

Just shaved off my beard for the first time in 5 years so I can be face-fitted at work.

Feels odd. I feel vulnerable. I look 12.

Why does it seem that more famous people are proportionally contracting this virus?

Is it due to their way of life ie always travelling, meeting new people, fans etc

Is it because they are more likely to be tested due to having more resources at their disposal than the average citizen. If so, i believe there are so many people (possibly millions) out there that are carrying it, with or without symptoms.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of them don't even have it and it's their way of staying in the spotlight.

I am meant to be in work in the morning. I had a hospital appointment last week where I was told I was, but haven't received a letter. No idea if I should be going in tomorrow or not.
I would phone your employer in the morning, the guy next to Johnson at the press conference said expect letters by Tuesday at the earliest.

I spoke with an Italian friend who said why it's so bad in Italy is the government did not take it seriously and neither did the public.
If they had declared a curfew and forced people into quarantine or isolation it would have been a lot less. I fear the same is going to happen in the UK too.

They're more likely to get tested. It's as simple as that.

Honestly, where did this idea that the Brits love freedom and couldn't cope with being ordered around come from? We're famous for queuing and we're the most surveilled country in the world. We love authoritarianism.

Replace Johnson's daily address with a series of stern but attractive men and women telling us what to do and we'd all be too horny to leave the house anyway.
  it is scary how true this is.(for me anyway)

I suspect the case and death rate in Iran is way beyond Italy's and China's. But the truth will never be released.

It's a shame because truthful data will help everyone understand the disease a lot more and may save many lives.

I suspect Italy has it worse not only because one of the oldest populations in europe, but also their way of life - they often share houses with many family members, look after their ageing parents in close proximity and also greet each other with cheek kissing as part of their culture. I'm not saying it's definitely the reason, but I can't imagine it would help.

Yeah luckily my high level manager is decent, told me to take the day off and try and speak to my doctor's to see if they can confirm it for me

If they want to rule over ruins, there's nothing stopping them.

I haven't read anything from Russia either, apparently it's life as normal there, which is very hard to believe as they share a border with China and extensive economic ties in both Europe and parts of Asia that are heavily hit.

I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories but how convenient are the reports of Harvey Weinstein testing positive?

Is he apart of a predator ring full of highly influential people of interest?

From reddit :

What it again shows is the earlier you introduce social distancing the more profound the effect is.

Someone posted on Twitter that all the lockdown, physical inactivity, delays in graduation and subsequent unemployment could be precipitating a mental health crisis and I agree.

More and more I'm beginning to lean towards letting the lower risk population out and to work or school while concentrating the isolation towards higher risk groups as soon as the curve starts to flatten a bit.

Russia is well documented by WHO that they closed the border with China in January and has been testing and quarantining people from January. They simply didn't announce it loudly. I saw the interview of the WHO representative today who said this. They have tested over 165,000 by now. Plus the Chinese shared intelligence with them from the beginning and they have been working on some treatment for a while now. They are fairly good in these kinds of things.
