Build a team around him, Garnacho and Martinez. They seem like the only players who have some dawg in them.

We are going to have to be a little bit patient with him, but the attributes and talent are clearly there.

That running with the ball from the final 3rd was pretty much the majority of his Atalanta highlights and yesterday was the first time he did. It’s telling that it came from an opposition mistake and not pass from a team mate.

He needs to be getting played though like that more often. Play to his variety.

Patient? I’m sick of waiting for him to score a brilliant brace in a CL match.

What do you think of Martinez?
I think a fully fit Martinez can be a good player for us like he showed last season. He doesn't have the athletic requirements that I mentioned in my previous post, but he defends proactively and can evade and resist the opponent's press in confined spaces, which will help with ball progression. And if we add more physicality, athleticism and technical quality around him by signing two right sided CBs, as well as a LCB to rotate with Martinez, then I think there will be potential to develop the team to a high level.

We should sign the Galatasaray player who played that pass to him, then! Because otherwise we're not really able to create those situations.
Haha.

That’s been my biggest disappointment with Onana, I thought he’d be able to play Hujland through more.

I think Casemiro can do it, but when he has the ball we’re set up to play it wide

Easily the best of the bunch from United summer transfers.

Turns out you can find players who fit the system without having any previous connections with ten Hag

Mason Mount has looked very promising the last couple of matches apart from finishing.

Actually, both Højlund, Mount and Amrabat are showing signs they may be useful, once they are well past injuries, integrated with the team and all playing in reasonable positions.

We are clearly not yet ready to play with a makeshift x3 defence in front of a new keeper.

He's been great so far. I hope he keeps going and gets a move to a big team.

/s sorta

I actually think some of our scouts are decent but the idiots in charge just ignore them and ask the manager to tell them what to do.

Reminds me of a young RVN in many ways. Kid is a beast, that’s for sure. Not sure he is quite the natural finisher that RVN was at his age, but if not for a couple of inches, he’d have had a hatrick of sublime goals yesterday. Still, the brace he got was of the highest quality.

He actually jumps for the ball and contest it. That alone makes him a massive improvement over what we had.

I've wasn't a fan of us signing him particularly wasn't impressed with his first touch but so far he has impressed me quite a bit, particularly his mentality so seemingly being immune to our on and off the field woes, hopefully if he keeps it up we have some serious talent on our hands.

I have been saying from day 1, his talent is clearly there. All we need to do is to have a little patience and he would turn into beast for us. I think he would be our best signing in years.

They are nothing alike

Ruud at his age had scored 8 goals in 40 games in the Dutch 2nd division. His first big scoring season was for PSV where he turned 22 right before the season. So that equivalent age would be 2025/26 for Hojlund (also the similar age where most strikers step up, 22 or 23).

I don't think people realize how rare it is for an actual, physical center forward to literally produce ~anything~ at his age in a big league.

I don't see the comparison with RVN. RVN started as an AM but was an out and out finisher. RH seems to be have more to his game.

RH is quicker, bigger, more physical.

One thing I noticed is that he has a long torso relative to his legs, which means a lower centre of gravity, so that gives him a bit better balance and agility and acceleration.
It also means he doesn't look as tall as he is.

He's definitely a rough diamond so hopefully with good coaching and no injuries he could develop into something frightening.

I played as a defender and he looks a nightmare to mark. Once these big quick strong guys get in front of you or behind you, it's impossible to get near them. You end up getting an elbow in the face.

I think he'll be brilliant at near post runs, running across the defender particularly on his left side.

Both goals werent easy but he made it look effortless, thats trademark of a great No. 9 imo. Now its up to ETH to make sure Bruno, Rashford, Mount, Case, Onana, can find him.

I'd take it you have never watched Ruud in his pomp then? Hojlund's 2nd goal was reminisce of Ruud's goal against Arsenal at Highbury in 02/03. Ruud was very very strong, he could brush aside his opponents with ease if he want to, and he was really fast (by the 2000's standard) as shown by his solo run goals scored for us and PSV.

It’s kind of insane that he has come in as a 20 year old, played seven games doing pretty well, and now he is almost the sole source of hope and optimism for the fans. It’s huge pressure. Thankfully he seems to have the right blend of being both confident and grounded. There will surely be rough patches as well, though.

The main thing that sets Rasmus apart from the likes of Bendtner and Dolberg, so far at least, is his attitude. Its all about football and United for him and I hope he sticks to that and I also believe thats why he has had this meteoric rise. The sheer determination to be the the best he can be shines through on the pitch.

Haha.

Take it from someone who definitely watched Ruud in his pomp. He was strong but he was never really fast. That goal against Arsenal wasn’t scored because he ran quickly. It was a brilliantfirst touch that made the difference.

Look at how much ground the Arsenal number 3 makes up on him.

Yeah, it's a bit of a sidenote, but I'd be really disappointed if Højlund didn't end up outscoring both of those for the national team. Dolberg could still score some, of course, but he hasn't gone anywhere close to living up to the potential he showed for Ajax at a young age. Bendtner was (and is) just a moron.

Kinda makes you smile when he referred to the second goal as a Hojlund goal...some players have a trademark celebration...United's new no.9 has a trademark goal!

*I know he doesn't wear the no.9 before some smartarse comments

RVN wasn't really fast. He wasn't slow either but definitely not quick.

He wasn't known for solo goals. Also he rarely if ever scored from outside the box.

They're different players really.

It's difficult to compare Højlund to anyone cos normally tall players aren't so quick except for Haaland. I think he's more skillful than Haaland also.

It's not just speed, it's the determination and bloody mindedness to keep possession and keep one step ahead of the defender for half the length of the pitch.

We have plenty of speed merchants in attack but no one with that fire in the belly that we saw from Hoj last night.

That's not really determination though, that's actual technique. It's very difficult to full on sprint with the ball without kicking and running after it and keep control. It's a very rare trait not even Rashford (who many would say is our quickest player) has. That's what's so exciting, because if you combine that carrying ability with his strength it's impossible to get him off the ball in open space.

‘We need to remember we can’t [concede] goals right after we score,’ said Hojlund.

‘We [have] had a few games now where they just score, after we scored.

‘So we want to go back and analyse that tomorrow and talk about it in the group.

‘And of course it’s a tough period now, but we need to stick together and that’s the only way we can get out of this period.’

Exactly the type of attitude needed in that dressing room full of passengers.

I'd also say speed was not one of Ruud's biggest assets but I don't think that clip is the best example. He's running a diagonal but the defender is running a straight line.

this isn’t a great example of why he wasn’t fast
