I just saw his goals. It’s incredibly rare that a player who is dribbling the ball beats another player who isn’t, in a foot race. It’s seriously impressive to do that and keep the ball close enough to your feet to be able to play that dink at the end. I’m really struggling to think of the last time I even saw that.

It's surprised me how much of a big fecker he looks. When I saw him at Atlanta he looked quiet skinny.

It's nice to have a stronger number 9 in the era of passing skinny faux 9s like Gabriel Jesus.

I’d like to think that all the geniuses who were concluding in advance that he won’t get many goals and “not the kid’s fault” but “he’s not up to it” and a waste of money (this is the shit his own fans were dishing out after four games), will withdraw their hasty condemnations for the time being.

Probably not. But it was enough to witness a pretty complete CF performance, with two very well taken goals and more than a glimmer of hope that he is going to succeed.

Why? Assuming both are in a similar vein of form I think Rashford would still do well.
Think Rashford on the right is the way forward. He's got a very good cross on him from that side, and Garnacho's wing play is perfect for a CF like Hojlund IMO. Can whip in balls for him all day

Does anyone know who the defender he outpaced was?

Was it a quick defender or notoriously slow one?

Veiled way of saying “Lindelof”
Been saying it for over 5 years about Lindelof. We need CBs who have the physical ability to win duels, athletic ability to defend the channel in isolation, as well as having the technical ability in possession to contribute towards what we do on the ball. The EPL is brutal right now and demands a high level of technical, physical and athletic ability from the CB, if the aim is to play a more expansive game in possession and press high up the pitch.

Mate you read my mind. I was just too lazy to type that out.

Kind of sad that we have a midfield full of international superstars yet one of the only positions that isn't a concern is the one occupied by a 20 year old with barely any experience at top level football.

As far as pace is concerned, Hojlund outpaced Arsenal's Gabriel on his debut. And Gabriel is said to be quick.

Tbf that seems a bit kind to Maguire from SI
Just checked and Maguire has worse acceleration and agility but the same pace which seems about right.

In any case, we don't need to be worried about Hojlund's pace. He is very quick.

To quote someone- we overpaid by about 40m for just another overrated teenager.

I also think Rashford on the right naturally gets him away from the solo mindset of cutting in a shooting non stop. Garnacho has shown signs of better decision making on the left and this way Rashford can play a bit more with his eyes up.

They said he had pace, but that second goal highlighted it beautifully. Composed finish too.

You know what was probably the most impressive part about him last night was when he was at full pelt in a race he still seemed in utter control whilst holding someone off. Then still produced that finish. That to me tells you a lot about him.

Just hope he continues making the runs and keeping the intensity up whilst others around him flap about thinking their the 2nd coming of Maradona.

So, so very pleased he scored a couple and led the line. He's young, raw, and could benefit from experience around him. But he does give us something to look forward to, over some time though. Let's keep our expectations supportive but also sensitive to the fact that he isn't playing in a settled team.

Luckily for United and Rasmus...they have a few players around his age which can offer us all some comfort for the future.

Hojlund 20 yrs
Garnacho 19 yrs
Mainoo 18 yrs

Hannibal and Amad too if they develop well( which I hope to God they do!)

Damn we may have gotten a real talent on our hands finally. He looked incredible. Granted it was against poor opposition but that display reminded me of the level of strikers that played at our great club. Long may that continue!

Watching the highlights back his individual performance put a smile on me amidst this gloomy period surrounding our club.

amazing the difference in the narrative after just one game for hojlund. People were absolutely slating the shit out of him before the game. Guess they can calm down and give him time to develop now a bit geez.

We are in total agreement

Absolutely. He’s just not build for the PL and it’s been clear for ages. He’s weak, has no physical presence and is the most passive ‘defender’ I’ve seen at United. feck knows how he’s lasted this long - one decent spell last season is all he’s got to show in his time here.

I'm impressed with how he's translated to the prem... I'm glad, shame he was on the losing side yesterday.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people assuring me he is “fine as back-up”. He isn’t. He’s not good enough to compete for a place when Varane and Martinez are fit and the bigger problem is when they are injured he has to play and he’s absolutely not good enough to do that (in the context of a team that aspires to win titles). But if he plays I’ll support him and pray he does okay!

The best thing about his performance and goals is the respect it'll command from his team mates and the opposition. Our players will now be more inclined to play for him instead of going for those shitty low xG shots (like the one Bruno did) and the oppo will have to double team him, which frees up space for the others.

There's was one passage of play where Gala was playing a high line and I was looking for Rashy to make the run, so was the camera. Instead, Mount fired it in behind to Rasmus. It caught everyone off guard.

A bit pedantic here. He translated it to CL not Prem. He has yet to score in the Prem. Just wanted to point that out because I have him in my fantasy team since he was fit and yet to get any points.

Really hope he scores another brace at the weekend.

What do you think of Martinez?

Two (!) goal threats in our team? Our ship has come in. In all seriousness, it is brilliant to have this lad in the team.

Not far off a hat trick, only denied by a close but correct offside call. And these were no tap ins either.

Fair point, fingers crossed!

It's not just speed, it's the determination and bloody mindedness to keep possession and keep one step ahead of the defender for half the length of the pitch.

We have plenty of speed merchants in attack but no one with that fire in the belly that we saw from Hoj last night.
