Jeremy Corbyn - Not Not Labour Party(?), not a Communist (BBC)

How is it that all these shite candidates are leading the parties? Whatever happened to all the smart people becoming MPs? I understand why it happens in the USA because of money but why is it happening in the UK?
A mate of mine studied politics at a very good university and from his experience, it was the only the self-important, unintelligent, pugnacious students who were actually interested in becoming politicians. I had the displeasure of meeting two of them and it quickly made more sense to me as to why we've been in a bit of mess for a while!

I get the feeling Angeles challenge is just to test if Corbyn has to be on the ballot
If he does then MPs walk in unison to form a new party (almost certainly enough to become the official opposition)
If he is kept off the ballot then Chukka jarvis Benn etc will get nominated

Either way the party splits (and the unions go with Corbyn) so essentially they are fighting over the name

Fighting over the brand. It is very valuable. The loser will have a very hard task of becoming relevant, impossible for the hard left I would say.

Jeremy Corbyn would make a great Game of Thrones character. He'd be killed off in about 1 season but we'd all feel bad when he did, while wishing he'd just been an arse and taken power.

He's basically a real life Ned Stark

Alternatively, she could be the poison pill - she triggers the leadership contest and in swoops a more "electable" set of candidates to relieve us all after scaring everyone. So Eagle is the Labour Leadsom, and A. N. Other is the Labour May.

My trouble with all of this is that my MP is one who turned on Corbyn, so if she stands at the next GE I will be unable to vote :(

Edit: Signed a petition to try to get her deselected.

Come on that's unfair
You will still be able to vote for Momentum or reselected your mp (new new labour?)Unless you want to not vote and let the conservatives get a majority that allows them to enact whatever they want

I voted Labour last time without knowing anything at all about the candidate, other than seeing her picture on billboards. I simply expected that, as the Labour candidate, she would represent values I hold dear. Next time, if she stands again, I will know that she doesn't share my (and JC's) values - so I wouldn't be able to vote for her.

Did you not know anything about the party's platform whatsoever? And how it's been for the last few decades?

Stupid question.
Stupid or just one you don't want to answer? I'm curious because Eagle is probably to the left of Miliband, let alone Blair and Brown.

Anyway, here's more polling of the unions

Stupid. Offensive.

SKY DATA shows only 18% of people think Corbyn would be a better PM than May.
Anyone denying going into any election with Corbyn as leader, not being anything short of a disaster is quite frankly delusional.

Gonna have to get you to join as a £3er when the time comes.

So, Corbyn holds a 18% advantage over May? That's huge!

No, 18% of people think he'd be the better PM, 62% think May would. On the plus side, 20% don't know.

Sky Data though, questionable.

Imagine that people thinking a leader currently under a revolt is worse than one who has just won an election. Really suprising poll result, blown away.

Personally think Eagle should step down as challenger in favour of Owen Smith. She's shown she can't unite the members, handle the media, handle the pressure, or quickly respond to events. Unelectable

Where are these polls done? I'm a member of CWU, just interested..
Same as all YouGov polls, they've got an online panel of 800,000 people and the responses are taken from there.

I've never been so disgusted by how out of touch our elected representatives can be. I will be much more active in my local Labour Party in the near future. I say "near future" because if JC is kept off the ballot that's it for me, I'll cancel my membership.

Corbyn will overcome them. Hopefully after that the Tory Lites will leave for good.

Not gonna lie, getting pretty pissed off with someone that long considered voting for Donald Trump having the audacity to call people Tory Lite.

And if the 'Tory Lites' won't vote Corbyn, how the hell do you expect the rest of the population to do so?

We agree in a way though, we need a choice, Centre Left or Tory Lite, if you will.

New Labour or New SWP.

Good luck.

No. The choice is who offers ordinary people a manifesto that raises their livelihood.

If we had a war, you can bet your life they will find the money to fund it.

But investing in people???

The thing is that plenty of anti Corbyn posters in here stated during the last leadership election that the party members and PLP would have to get behind whoever won the contest. Corbyn surges out of nowhere and these same people switch rhetoric (essentially abandon ship). I can understand why, but it undermines your positions on Corbyn now. For instance, had Corbyn lost the election all of us Corbyn supporters would still be backing Labour despite the presence of a leader we would most likely hate. You lot aren't willing to make the same concessions, and so perhaps a split is best after all.

a split of the 'current' party will happen. The point is it is no point 'winning' an election that contributes little to nothing to the betterment of struggling people.

There are many examples in history of movements fueled by a thirst for justice that started with very small numbers. Civil Rights, Independence of so many nations.

Its the convictions that attract people to these movements.

Well, the counter argument I guess is that it's better to have a centrist Labour Party in power than a right of centre Tory party. But I agree with you in general. A split has to, and obviously will, happen. Best case scenario would be unions and Momentum organising a solid grass roots campaign for candidates to stand against various rebel MPs. Something to build on, and genuine opposition. It's all about the long term now, just a shame it's had to happen this way.
