Are we in for him or any player as it doesn't feel like a transfer window? Don't know if it's the Euro's or a new tactic to keep the prices low??

What do you mean? Mickey and Ibra are just about confirmed, seems we're also trying to get Pogba and maybe James.

£26m for a player with 1 year left on his contract is a lot. That's undeniable. Wanyama was in a similar position and went to Saints PL rivals Spurs for a bargain £11m

If another club "kidnapping" him means paying £26m for him, then I highly doubt it. United probably could've dragged it out and got the price lowered or made a deal with the player/agent to sign next year for free with a bigger signing on fee to compensate

Credit to United though, they didn't play those games and just got it done. I don't even care how much United pay for players, it's not my money, but it doesn't change that £26m for a player with a year left of his contract is a lot

Sorry mate but United cannot afford to wait. We are a billion pound club and 26M is peanuts to United. We are a club trying to get our status back, we cannot wait especially in a season that may be the most competitive yet.

Waiting one year and not getting champions league football because the club did not give the manager the tools he needed is a very poor business model. I seem to remember the fans criticize Gill and Fergie during those days they were trying to find value in the market, at the end, we spent money on dross and got nothing in return. Bebe, Diouf, Obertan the list goes on. Trying to manage in football as never pay off for anyone. They always end up looking like idiots without trophies, their bank balance is never greater than those that spend.

Ruhr Nachrichten: mkhitaryan to MUFC for around 40m euros, should be done this week.

Röckenhaus: Article translated on reddit

Main points from the article:

  • For the past two or three weeks, Dortmund had decided they would keep Mkhitaryan for this year and let him leave on a free next summer, as they didn't want to lose three key players.

  • Manchester United initially bid €40m, but Dortmund set a price of €42m, which United have now met. €42m will set a new Dortmund record for money recieved from a sale.

  • Dortmund want to discuss the sale at the next board meeting first, which is not common practice at BVB. Usually Zorc, Watzke, and the manager decide who to sell.

  • Mkhitaryan canceled the rent on his apartment in April, knowing he was going to move.

Probably the most bizarre part of Röckenhaus article is that there is a suggestion our signing of Mkhi is a part, or was part of a plan to get Zlatan and Pogba.

If you are comparing Wanyama quality with Mkhitaryan then you must be deluded. One is rated as one of the best creative players in the market right now,and another is rated as above average player.

Signing Mkhitaryan to get a shot at Ibrahimovic and Pogba doesn't sound too far fetched to me. But I wouldnt say he's really a makeweight for a Pogba deal. He's a quality player we would've went for no matter who his agent is. The Ibrahimovic signing is the one that doesn't make sense to me. Could be just to get further into Raiola's good graces so we get a crack at Pogba.

Aaahhh, the old "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em? Mickey is getting close, rumour of Pogba has been getting stronger but I will wait until at least one of the pictured holding the shirt with Woody pointing to the distance.

I can see all that info having truth to it but the bolder part I'm more sceptikal about. How would a German, BVB connected journalist know how Mourinho plans to use him? There's virtually no way unless he a) is connected with Mendes peeps or b) Mourinho told BVB while negotiating "You know what, I don't even really need this guy, I really just need his agent to give me Paul Pogba"

Skeptical
I think it's lost in translation a bit. What I think it means is that Mikhi wasn't a major part of Mous transfer plans, ie he wasn't really thinking about signing him that much more that when he approached Raiola for Pogba and Ibra he also got offered Mikhi.

Doesn't mean Mou wouldn't be delighted with him but obviously we're not going to target every good player on the planet and likely Mou had no idea Mikhi was available and wanted to come to United

It seems too far fetched. First mkhitariyan wouldn't reject Arsenal for us if we bought him just to get Pogba.

I think people are reading the tone of my post wrong

I'm not saying United should have waited. I simply mean that Club A trying to sign Player B who only has one year on his contract could potentially get the player a year later on a free. So paying £26m to do that transfer a year earlier in many cases will be a lot of money.

I'm glad United aren't trying the cheap option and are rather just getting it done

Wouldn't it been more wiser to use this money to sign Payet ?

Someone who instantly gives us a creative option we have been dying for.

What World are you living in? Why on Earth would West Ham who are moving into a near 60,000 seater state of the art stadium (on the cheap) sell Payet for anything under a crazy crazy 60m? He still has like 4 years on his contract.

Watford turned down 25m or so for Deeney, Premier League teams no longer need to sell, and West Ham United most certainly don't!

I have no idea who Mkhitaryan is, so I don't know. I can't comment on that.

But if you think Southampton selling one of their best players to a divisional rival for £11m isn't cheap, then I'm confused

Its cheap, but Southampton are currently without manager, which makes negotiations far easier.

It's cheap because he isn't an attacker and he is average. He is replaceable and isn't going to start at Spurs

This is similar to rvp deal.

Mkhitaryan also instantly gives us a creative option. And he's younger and cheaper.

I think the "Mou's plans comment" might be somewhat explained if United's initial offer really was only €24m and the United were prepared to play hard or even leave it until next summer, but Raiola pressured them into paying the €40-42m quickly. In any case it's most likely that Röckenhaus gets his infos from a Dortmund official and it's very unlikely that this official knows what Mourinho's thoughts are, so I would just ignore it for the time being.

We're never going to get a quality player for less than €30 million, when Crystal Palace are able to offer €30 million for players.

Last year or not, when a premier league club comes looking, especially if that club is United, the price goes up.

We seem to be interested in Mkhitaryan to fill the right wing spot. He's a good age, fast, creative and available for a decent price.

Would you describe Payet as a right winger with blistering pace, who is even available let alone at a decent price?

I'll be very happy with this deal if it happens as reported. Right-wing definitely one of weaker points, and this guy is quality. Good value too.

Just realised his first game in a United shirt will be against Dortmund!

Watze confirmed in an interview with "Der Westen" that we made a massively improved offer and that the decision will be made at the weekend.

Unless he improves dramatically under Jose I cant see him doing anything exceptional. This feels like a supplemental signing and not one to push the team forward.

A.K.A this will be done at the weekend. Expect him to be a Man Utd player before preseason training.

Slavan Bilic also said that Payet best position is off the left wing.

Our right wing options are Lingard and Mata, Mkhitaryan is significant improvement on both.

How often have you watched him? Because i can't understand how someone that has watched him regularly can have this opinion.

Yep, this one is done. The CEO isn't going to say "the situation has changed and because of training they have to sort it this weekend"

only to then stop the deal.

All that's left is MUFC twitter/website confirmation.

Yes, definitely. Although you can expect a higher fee than what's being reported in England. I would be surprised if it's less than €40m.
Great signing, my favourite Bundesliga player. :)

We're at the stage where it all goes quiet before the official twitter/website announcement.
