DIY 3D-printed guns get go-ahead after Trump administration strikes court deal

From 1 August, thanks to the Trump administration, a commercially available software blueprint will allow people to make their own guns using ABS plastic resin and a 3D printer.

The green light came late last month, with a court settlement between the designer of the blueprint and the US state department. Gun rights advocates celebrated.

In a statement greeting the news, the Second Amendment Foundation founder and executive vice-president, Alan Gottlieb, said: “Not only is this a first amendment victory for free speech, it also is a devastating blow to the gun prohibition lobby.”

Defense Distributed, the company behind the blueprint, declared: “The age of the downloadable gun formally begins.”

Do you realize some parts cannot be made of plastic and they are the most important in a gun?

Do you realize some parts cannot be made of plastic and they are the most important in a gun?

What exactly is your point here?

ONE tiny part cannot be made.of plastic, the firing pin. The rest absolutely can and the tiny metal parts can easily be hidden. This ruling makes taking guns through metal detectors or on to planes etc so much easier. It's a disgusting ruling and will just end up costing countless more innocent lives.

The only part that has any kind of regulation can be made of plastic, and I would argue it is the most important part. Everything else can be ordered online and sent through normal mail. Don’t even have to leave the house anymore. The background check has its faults but at least it’s somewhat of a deterrent for people, now the people that can’t pass that can just buy a printer instead.

Depends the state where we live (can’t buy some parts in New Jersey)and I wouldn’t print a plastic part to shoot.

Travels in Trumpland with Ed Balls has been a good episode tonight. Just confirms yet again that so many Americans are fecked in the head when it comes to guns.

Well, Fox Business has found just the thing. Personal protection company MC Armor has debuted a line of brightly colored backpacks that are just perfect for the schoolkid you don't want to see riddled with bullets from a legally bought AR-15. After a tasteful intro of LA Roux's song "Bulletproof," host Maria Bartiromo introduces MC Armor rep Carolina Ballesteros Casas, before asking, without any sense of irony, why they decided to market these items exclusively in the U.S.

Christ.

Betsy DeVos Eyes Federal Education Grants to Put Guns in Schools

The Education Department is considering whether to allow states to access federal funding set aside for academic enrichment and student services to purchase guns for educators, according to multiple people with knowledge of the plan.

Such a move would reverse a longstanding position taken by the federal government that it should not pay to outfit schools with weapons. And it would also undermine efforts by Congress to restrict the use of federal funding on guns. As recently as March, Congress passed a school safety bill that allocated $50 million a year to local school districts, but expressly prohibited the use of the money for firearms.

Yesterday on Instagram I came across a video where two guys allow a 3rd friend to put a gun in their mouth and shoot through their cheeks.I have it saved but I’m not sure on the CAF policy on such a thing as there is quite a bit of blood, however clearly something has gone wrong if these fellows were able to get their hand on a gun.

Doubt the gun issue will ever be solved in America, it’s too far gone and overpopulated with guns.

It was a pellet gun, powered by compressed air. In most jurisdictions this wouldn't even be considered a firearm.

Some people, but not enough, are working towards is a number of sensible changes that probably won't make much difference in the short term but could begin at least to change the long term effect. Closing the private seller loophole, enforcing background checks, not allowing people with criminal violent past (domestic violence, etc) access to legal firearms and a few other things are changes that have a good majority support and don't challenge the 2nd Amendment. Those reforms are a good start at least and should be pushed for immediately. Also exposing more of the NRA's connections with Russia and potentially other actors so their influence can be reduced.

By its very name, the 2nd can be amended. Remove the bear arms part, as the nation isn't under threat from any colonial power anymore. Let people keep arms and use them for hunting or target shooting but this nonsense about toting a gun everywhere you go because the constitution needs to end.

That's not really realistic c.2018 in my opinion. Not that I don't agree with you but I just don't think going that far is possible yet.

I used to feel the way you do hlbut the pro gun side isn't going to accept any changes, even the miniscule ones. They'll scream mission creep and that the end game is taking away their arms. Amend the constitution, let them keep them but restricted the bearing part unless the nation is under threat from outside.

I just think that might lose a few groups that might be crucial to at least kick starting meaningful reforms like law enforcement+military on one hand and the ACLU on the other.

@Skizzo @choiboyx012
How do most of your co-workers feel about gun control laws and how far would they go in supporting gun control?

Sadly, many of my colleagues are very pro-gun and subscribe to the "guns don't kill people, People kill people" line of thinking. Being we're in California, we have some of the most restrictive gun laws, and many get upset every year when new bans and laws and restrictions take effect. Tbf, most are in the middle and just want guns to protect themselves and their home/family. It's only the vocal minority of my dept that are gun nuts and have an arsenal of guns in their homes. Then you have the other minority like me who doesn't care for or like guns at all.

I made a long post about this in the gun control thread. Basically I think a big part of this is, the USA hasn't faced the true horrors of modern mechanized warfare the way the rest of the world has. The US Civil War just bordered the modern era of warfare. Due to this, I basically argued that the rest of the world, has in large part, rejected casual ownership of guns due to their collective experience with catastrophic warfare or civil unrest over the last 100-120 years. So the US does still have that rah rah lets go get em attitude. I should also say, this is the civilian population, because US servicemen HAVE seen it, but it hasn't been a collective experience where both the civilian, and military populations experienced it together. I also suggested Canada, and other countries like Australia that have largely avoided this kind of horror, have probably adopted the cultural experience from their European parentage due to closer ties to those European countries.

I would have thought it was other way around. The need for common man to carry guns existed far later than any other country in Europe.

It won't because those groups are not going to concede an inch. As I said, for them everything is one step closer to the government taking their guns.

Ah that's unfortunate but its good at least that there is some balance to the gun nuts. Do you think the majority would support closing the private seller loophole?

I always laugh when gun advocates talk about how trained, responsible, and in control they are.
Yet there's countless daft stories.
This is an exceptionally daft one obviously..

Was watching a documentary about an American high school last night (forget the name). A girl had a 16th birthday party and her uncle caught a kid smoking weed, then threatened to kill him. When asked about it, the camera zoomed in on his gun holster while he tapped it and said 'I've got my shooter'.

Twats.

I dont trust a lot of my colleagues with a gun, let alone civilians, as damning as it is.

Just watched this. I don't know how anyone can disagree with it. Well said by Obama.

Talking about guns on Reddit. Some guy throwing the cliche overthrowing the government tripe as justification for all the guns and all the deaths. I asked what the plan is and he said 'guerilla warfare'.

America is just the embarrassing idiot uncle of the world at this point.
Love the place and people for many reasons but it's isolationism and delusions of grandeur have turned it into Loopyville.
