F1 2024 Season

Hamilton last night accused F1 ruler Mohammed Ben Sulayem of introducing a ‘racist element’ after he told drivers not to behave like rappers.

Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, made the comment in an interview calling for a clampdown on swearing over team radios.

‘We have to differentiate between our sport and rap music,’ said Ben Sulayem, an Emirati and first non-European head of the governing body.

‘We’re not rappers. They say the f-word how many times per minute? We are not on that. That’s them and we are us.’

Responding to the comments to Autosport, Hamilton said: ‘I don’t like how he has expressed it. Saying rappers, is very stereotypical. Most rappers are black, so it says we are not like them.

‘It’s the wrong choice of words, and there is a racial element there.’

I think the same also, after Singapore the next race is the US 20th October, we could see new wings there.
Mercedes have their last big package of the season coming to Austin. Totto said Austin was probably Mercedes best chance of a gp win of the remaining races.

Austin could get very interesting bc isn't that also where Red Bull will allegedly bring their last big update of the season? I do think Red Bull is majorly fecked so far bc between Singapore being a common weakness, overheating that could play them parts in places like Mexico and the bumpy surface of Austin fecking with their already unstable package now ...it ll be damage control all the way to the end. Perhaps the only positive for them could be that if they give up on retaining the constructors title now, they may yet still barely cling onto the WDC.

I think Merc will still win a race this season though regardless of what Toto said.

This guy has been an utter clown since he was in charge, contributed nothing.

Danny Ric to drive his final F1 race this weekend. Being replaced by Liam Lawson for rest of races allegedly.

If they manage to solve the issue of the front and rear of the car being detached (airflow wise), then kudos to them.

Singapore could be the weakest weekend of the season for them. A punishing uneven surface, and a car that understeers to the apex of a corner and oversteers on way out of it. 19 corners in a lap around there. That will be punishing on driver and tyres.

Norris's WDC hopes hinge on this race.

How's that racist?

Do you guys just want to hate anything and everything about Hamilton? And anything he says?

Read what he said and don’t just read the clickbait headline. He hasn’t said it’s racist. He’s saying that he’s contrasted F1 drivers to rappers, a group that’s majority black, and so he’s stereotyped a group which consists of one race primarily and so immediately anyone who paints a picture of comparison in their mind would likely be doing so with an F1 driver and a black rapper. Hence, a racial element.

There’s plenty of groups who swear. And @hobbers ypu could never prove rappers swear the most of any celebrity group. Comedians swear. Football players swear.

The point is he’s (probably unintentionally) picked a group that’s intrinsically linked to a race which is naive. And that’s Hamilton’s point, if you read what he said properly and not the clickbait headlines.

It’s not going to kill you if you occasionally agree with Hamilton. But maybe, I guess it might.

Nice post

Formula 1's new, narrower 2026 tyre specifications have made their debut on an Aston Martin mule car.

In preparation for the major rule changes set for two years from now, Pirelli is introducing slightly smaller tyres as part of an initiative to reduce the overall weight of the cars.

While the tyres will retain the current 18-inch rim size used in the latest ground-effect era, both the front and rear tyres will be reduced in size.

Pirelli has agreed to decrease the front tyre width by 25mm and the rear by 30mm. Additionally, the overall tyre diameter will shrink from the current 720mm to a range of 705-710mm.

Although F1’s final technical regulations for 2026 are still being finalised—meaning the definitive aerodynamic load hasn't been set—Pirelli didn't want to delay testing. As a result, they coordinated with the FIA to run a mule car test programme using modified 2023 cars.

With all teams keen to gain early insights into the 2026 tyre designs, there was significant interest in securing a chance to run a mule car for these initial tests.

Aston Martin emerged as the frontrunner, with team principal Mike Krack revealing that the decision for the team to participate in the first test was made through a lottery.

“There was a selection process – or a lottery process – because there was a number of teams who wanted to be part of this test programme. We were drawn first, so we are the first to do this,”

Nope. Doesn't matter if you want to be a pedant about the exact words he used. Nothing to do with it being Lewis moaning either, would be the same if it was anyone else complaining.

There would only be a racially charged element to it if he'd specifically said Hamilton should stop swearing on the radio like a rapper.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Red Bull's performance uptick a bit since they identified the issues, therefore as always its probably going to take a couple of Max DNF's to make the WDC interesting.

Do you guys just want to love anything and everything about Hamilton? And anything he says? It's not going to kill you if you occasionally disagree with Hamilton..

Sigh. These kind of remarks are just lazy. Also, I don't like how these days any kind of disagreement is often described as "hate". It kills conversations.

Yes there are plenty of groups who swear, but is any group as well known for it as rappers? Most of them have done their best to create their whole image around swearing, insulting others, picking fights through diss tracks, talking about fecking bitches and getting money. It's their brand. Dealing drugs, violence, even killing people, it all features heavily in the rap scene. This is not true for comedians or footballers. And so it's not illogical for MBS to use rappers as an example of what he doesn't want in F1. You say rappers are intrinsically linked to a race, while that might be true for some I think for a lot of people Eminem is one of the first to pop into their heads as he's probably the most well known and successful rapper of the past 20 years. And he's not the only one. So for me rappers does not equal black people even if they're obviously the majority and it's clear MBS didn't intend have any bad intentions when he said this either. To me, saying he introduced a racially charged element is far fetched at best. Not everything needs to be made about race and to me this is one of those things.

I don’t know why I bother engaging with you guys in this thread. Such an archaic understanding of modern day racism. It’s actually sad. But not at all surprising.

He said swearing so not sure why you have gone on a tangent about drugs, violence, getting money and being promiscuous.

I said swearing as well and used the other stuff as an explanation for why rappers are a more logical group to use to illustrate bad behaviour than comedians.

I reckon I've been posting in F1 threads here since I started, god I'm old, but it's been this way for a long time now, used to be a great thread to get involved in, mostly for on track issues and general disagreements.

I've definitely been guilty of standing by an incorrect opinion, heated comments whilst watching, perhaps being overly defensive of my favourites. But genuinely now certain drivers could do nothing right, the smallest little comments or detail and it's just hate......and don't even think about defending a driver or worse still make a comment toward their favourite driver, waste of time.

That's if you consider swearing bad behaviour. It doesn't necessarily equate to that.

It's a poor explanation and the other stuff is irrelevant.

Swearing is not an exclusive trait to one group, it's prominent in all levels of society and profession.

If they consider it bad behaviour/something they don't want in F1, they could have just said just that.

'We don't want our drivers swearing and want to clamp down on it as it's a family sport.'

Done. No need to make any reference to any group of people. It's right to question why.

It's like when footballers get tattoos or jewellery and they're suddenly now living a rapper lifestyle, despite again, both things being prominent at all levels of society and profession.

Could have said actors, could have said biker gangs, could have said inmates. Should have said nothing.

First the jewellery, now this nonsense. The man is overbearing and out of his depth.

Well where I'm from it generally is, there's a reason kids are taught not to swear and are told off if they do. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't swear. I personally don't mind drivers swearing in the heat of the moment and I don't want it to be banned but I can see where MBS is coming from.

Swearing is not an exclusive trait to one group no, no he didn't have to use any one group to make his point, and yes he could have gotten his point across in different ways. This is obviously true for most statements. But like I said rappers are well known for swearing a lot, they basically use it to build their image, and so I don't find it strange that he referenced them, don't think it was disingenuous. And I don't think it was racially motivated which is what Hamilton suggests.

Actors, really? Biker gangs, inmates or criminals in general sure (though then he would probably be ridiculed for suggesting that swearing is criminal behaviour or something ), but actors?

The man is definitely out of his depth we can agree on that. I never understood why he got the position and he's not exactly done a good job either yet he's still there.

It's a dog whistling type comment.

Glad we can agree on that part. Rappers are playing a act much like Pacino did in Scarface 98% of the time. Either that or they die quickly.

But it wasnt racism last time you posted, it was just 'racially charged'?

Rappers swear. They are synonymous with swearing and bad language, moreso than any other musicians (or comedians like you suggested, or footballers as they're not mic'd up). They also swear on the radio which makes the commonality with racing drivers swearing on the radio a light hearted comparison. Saying 'dont swear like a rapper' is not racialising swearing. Just as it's not demonising swearing. End of story.

Rap is black music whether Eminem is the first or last thing that pops into your head, and it's just intellectually dishonest trying to use him to show that it maybe sorta isn't.

Also, how is it clear that MSB didn't have bad intentions when he said this?

Agreed, it’s definitely Hamilton’s fault, he’s just the worst.

Red Bull look absolutely nowhere. Wont be surprised if they dont make Q3 again

There's just been a massive storm here tonight and high chance there'll be more over the weekend, which could make it interesting...or not if they suspend.

Hope it fecking washes away that embarrassment of an fia president.
