As announced by Bloomberg and confirmed by RMC Sport, UEFA is preparing a counterattack in the Super League. UEFA is working with investment fund to come up with new LOC that would have a starting budget of €4.5b but which could go up to €7b.

this is going to be a spectacular backfire on the clubs invovled. Im still disgusted that United are at the helm of this and I want to see Woodward burn for this.
I will never put a single penny towards United again until this changes. Not one penny

Probably all feeding off that one tweet.

Yeah United and Liverpool bullied Chelsea and City into signing up. Don't let yourself be fooled mate, they're both in this upto their neck like the rest of them.

I mean if you think about it Chelsea and City's owners aren't greedy capitalists out to make as much off the clubs as they can. This isn't to say our owners' motivations are pure or anything but it makes perfect sense that they'd be reluctant to overhaul a system to further a goal that has never been a priority.

Evidence session? I don’t think anyone is suggesting a crime has been committed have they? Its just unethical and not in the interest of the British public.

If it is a Select Committee their public hearings are called evidence sessions. There is no penalty for perjury (at the moment), although it has long been mooted that Parliament will pass a law to compel attendance at such sessions.

Didn't say they got bullied. Said that they were cowards and signed up even though they weren't completely enamoured with it. Further, both are actually funded by private/national wealth that isn't reliant on bank debt. So them pulling out isn't out of the question if they think it hasn't got legs, especially as they are the two who could probably most easily swallow a fine for backing out. If they go and Bayern, Dortmund and PSG don't join. You're left with a league of 10.

I think the reports that Chelsea and City are the least committed make sense.
In terms of money - their owners haven't got into this to make money directly, but for prestige and branding.
In terms of dominance - they (esp City) have crazy dominance over established teams under the current system. If the money from the new SL materialises, then even Spurs can compete with them on an almost equal footing, and Roman/Mansour will have to put up a lot more cash to keep them ahead.
In terms of fan backlash - for City, I'm not sure how well-established they are in Asia and America yet. Might need a few more successful years to be able to sever all connections at home. This isn't a concern for the other clubs.
All 3 reasons apply to PSG too, and they're officially out.

It makes sense that Perez (club in debt) and Glazer (more money guaranteed, more competitive team with no extra spending) are the two leading men.

“14 PL clubs unanimously reject plans for super league”

That’s all well and good but isn’t it a bit like me rejecting my invite to the golden globes? They weren’t invited anyway, and it’s nothing to do with them.

Not when the breakway clubs want to remain in the premier league. And changes to the premier league need to 2/3 majority...so the 14 clubs do have the power in that regard.

I just find it so pathetic from clubs like ourselves and Liverpool.

We have literally handed clubs like Barcelona a lifeline to stop them from going bankrupt and sold a huge amount of our respect to do so. In case it gets lost on anyone, Spanish clubs barely have 2 pennies to rub together and we have played the biggest roll in building a league that means that we are sustainable and yet because they asked nicely and sold the Glazers on bigger dividends we have thrown that all away.

Sounds like a Select Committee - to allow them to scrutinise the proposal.

Question...

Forgetting your personal preferences..

Who actually thinks the Super League idea will happen?

I can't tell. It seems a lot of effort to be a negotiation tactic. And contracts have been signed. But i can't see many clubs / players wanting to stick with it.

Obviously his words are not all true, but it's hard to believe they didn't calculate all the backlash they are having right now. Anyone could've seen this.

That's just giving them what they want

Yeah I'm actually surprised they're even in this. The whole thing is so to prevent new money from disrupting football and City / Chelsea are the posterboys of new money. They don't give a feck that RM can't compete in a world where nation states can throw their wealth around at prestige projects.

Can someone explain this rule to me?

You will be receiving an invoice in the post tomorrow for £15, 000 which will entitle you to own a tiny portion of Manchester United. Kindly pay immediately and please ignore all insults subsequently received from United fans for being a bloodsucking owner.

Agree with all of that.
Sickening, but not surprising that we are at the heart of this.
I think they have miscalculated though. 95% of fans (probably a higher percentage if you count match going fans only) are against this. What will it look like when 8,000 turn up on a Wednesday to watch Utd vs Milan?
Woodward and co have shown their true colours now, its shit or bust for them. They cannot possibly stay if this doesn't go ahead.

The Super League statement is on both clubs official sites mate. Whether or not the intentions is to make money (it clearly is a part of it) they still agreed to join up. I can't believe anyone is naive enough to believe some random bullshit twitter narrative that they were bullied into joining.

Roman was one of the main voices calling for FFP let's not forget. They want their ticket onto the boat and to pull the ladder up behind them.

No you didn't mate but the tweet that started all this implied it.

I think this was an exercise in introducing the idea, dip the toe and see what reception it gets.

Unfortunately, a lot of the resistance to it seems to be that it's not based on a meritocracy - teams can't get relegated. A lot less of the ire directed at it is based on the fact it's fecking over smaller clubs, travelling fans and the history of the clubs.

I dont think it will happen this time, but I think they know what they need to re-jig to try again in a few years.

Bullied is too far and I don't believe that for a minute, but I do think it's increasingly evident that Chelsea and City were not the driving forces behind this and therefore that we were more reluctant. Just look at which clubs are represented in the hierarchy of the SL - that's all the proof you need.

Anyone that lives and is somewhat in touch with the UK football culture. The Yanks leading this are not.

They thought it'll be fans, networks and players at most, not governments and the EU. Also they banked on full greed from all top clubs but some clubs resisted for whatever reason.

I can't tell if you want this club to stay owned by the Glazers just so you are proven right in the end.

Here it is. Might as well end the thread here since this was the logical conclusion to it all.
