UEFA President: United weren't a big club until Alex Ferguson

People want to bow down to the governing body of a competition which the president thinks we were a tinpot club before SAF even though we had when a European Cup 18 years before SAF?

Hard to imagine this going down if SAF would have still been at the club, and I am not taking anything away from Ole at all. Just everyone respects SAF the real godfather

The outrage has nothing to do with UEFA.

I think it would be fascinating to know what these clubs internal data suggested re: fan and player/ex-player response. Did they expect the huge backlash? I am confident they are so out of touch and insulated (especially the American owners) that they just might have had no idea.

I wonder if the clubs in question anticipated level of response from fans. It’s almost unanimously negative.
99,9% they did. And yet they went ahead with it. The brazenness is something else.

I don’t think there’s a way back. To get to this point of the announcement and breaking away there would have to have been foundations built for years. Contracts signed etc.

There’s no way they go back because of PR because I have no doubt they fully anticipated it.

I want super league. Let's move on from those pointless 3 AM game against Spartak Moscow...

The essence of Champions league is always watching the elite club vs elite club anyway, this is what we want.

It could be even more cynical than that. It's a good idea for German and French clubs to wait and see how Serie A, La Liga and the PL deal with their clubs, if they ban them from domestic competitions then there is a chance for wealty club owners to get significantly more money from TVs because the ESL is supposed to be a midweek competition, that means that weekends primetime slots could yield big money. If you are Al Khelaifi, you get Ratcliffe, Pinault, Seydoux and Rybolovlev on the phone and try to find out if they are willing to develop a product for weekends.
If those teams are banned, they will simply play ESL during weekend prime-time.

Everyone mentioning that it's greed behind this idea but there is also a greed behind backlash. Greed from corupt UEFA and from clubs who are not involved in this new super leahue cuz they will lose income which is generated by playing against those clubs. I quite like the idea to be fair. Multiple big games through the season doesn't sound so bad.

Also in my opinion Ceferin knew about this idea for some time now cuz he is heavily involved in Slovenian politics in last few months and it seems he is preparing the stage to go candidate for prime minister which would be nice backup if this go through.

Gotta say, I'm loving all the meltdown. I'm ready to give it all up, I just want shit to burn down

I'm the same, in a very sadistic way, I want to see the off field drama last for a long time. Spite is very entertaining at the moment.

WOW just WOW. Back then the European Cup was a new exciting competition comparable to the Super League concept and United were I believe without checking England's first representatives
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

He should calm the rhetoric, he literally has the weight of public opinion on his side, but calling for clubs and players to be banned is going to sway the fence sitters against him. he should just say he's disappointed and they will review the matter internally.

I didn't realise my post said that. The point is why have people not taken a stance on money ruining the game before now? Small clubs have been getting hit financially for years while money at the top has been out of control for years. People didn't really give a shit about that before, but now they apparently do?

Well, if that's not what your post says, then what the feck is the point about going on about UEFA and FIFA? It's not they who have just announced the ESL. Also, if you haven't noticed anyone complaining about money ruining the game before now, which particularly large and dense sand dune have you spent the last two decades buried under?

It might be what you want, but its very clear from the reaction here that it's not what we want.

Who wants to bow down to them?

The UEFA isn't a big boy, i kind of hope that you realize it, they have been blakmailed and caved at every turn for more than 30 years by the clubs that have now left. The UEFA is nothing economically without the popularity of the CL which has been destroyed by the ESL and in general they are nothing compared to JP Morgan or the other actors in the ESL.
UEFA bent backward for their cash cows (former now?) because they're themselves corrupted, and money grabbing. Doesn't mean they lose their power to the players where their national FAs affiliated to UEFA. In other terms, UEFA has the agreement of the nations. A few rich clubs with the finance of global financial entities can make ESL, doesn't mean UEFA is a vulnerable homeless, that they're shite scared having to shut their own propaganda.

The point being, they may lose, but they are big enough that they can't shut up.

Yeah lets completely feck over all the other teams apart from these 12. Who gives a shit. Football doesn't exist outside those 12.

Can't imagine any negatives for all the teams in the Championship, League 1 and 2 if the Premier League gets gutted of its biggest draws. Nope.

There's no turning back from this. These clubs have crossed the line. It will be near impossible to fix the relationship with UEFA if everything is canceled.

Either this competition goes through or the board of all the 12 clubs will have to leave.

Gotta be bs that. There’s no way people running Juventus would be dishonest.

Correct. There’s no turning back.

18 years is a long time though. Without SAF we probably wouldn't be a top club like we are now.

The European Cup didn't gut Division 1 of its biggest six teams and effectively have them abandoning it. It isn't comparable.

At the moment they aren't talking about abandoning the domestic competitions. They're only talking about abandoning the CL and EL at this stage

My belief is that this is a transitional step into a completely closed Super League without participatory guests and a permanent secession from all domestic competitions. This is just the "let them get used to the idea" phase.

I beg to differ, I think he will be having his accountants on speed dial working out how much of the £400m payout he can get for his clients and how to hide it from the taxman. Players may not have been contacted but I will bet my last dollar that the likes of Raiola and Mendes were kept in the loop.

Talk of banning players from international football is just posturing and it will be tied up in litigation for years. It's up to the governments to step in and dial back this corporatization of the poor man's sport by the elite.

Maybe it will be tied up for years, but players will be banned in time for the Euros and they'll have to wait for all the legal stuff to move through before they can play for their country in Euros/WC again. That might be a long time.

 same, the drama is incredible. Mind you to me football died awhile back when billionaires started to buy clubs. Probably why part of me don't even care. It's become money money money

We‘re constantly told that there are people who ‘know the club’ and have the ‘insert club’ DNA (applies to all clubs)...well this is the time to show it.
