Not sure where I read it, but think it was said Southgate wouldn’t discuss the job with us before mid august out of respect for his England job. This reprieve for Erik seems to make Southgate a more likely possibility in the short to medium term for us. If EtH fecks it by Christmas i could see Sir Gareth of Southgate being parachuted in.

I just hope Erik smashes it so I don’t have to spend two seasons watching that boiled horse bungle a rebuild for us.

Not happy about this at all, but at least we can put this saga to bed.

Surely ETH is the most backed manager I’ve seen and has to deliver improvements next season? I don’t know if I can take it if we start our next season like we did our last against Wolves.

Even a broken clock's right twice a day

Ten Hag doesn't deserve the stay of execution but I am relieved that the Southgate stuff can die a death (for now).

I hope next season he will be as pragmatic as he was in his first season, and in the Cup final. Instead of send us out with the donut formation that saw us conceding 20 shots a game for months on end.

Glad that’s sorted. Now let’s see what the summer’s transfers bring and also get players back to fitness for the start of the new season.

Agreed on all counts here but I just hope that the health of the squad miraculously turns around as so many seem to believe so that we can see what a fit side can do.

Given what was on show the few times the team was relatively healthy, I can't say I expect much of a difference but that's the only potential silver lining I can see here even though injuries are absolutely part of the game for everybody.

I also hope the club manage to be decisive in the market for a change and really address key needs for the club long term rather than wasting time in the summer trying to buy exactly who the manager wants.

Hope we get news of outgoings to wasn't his over soon too
Are we keeping the same physios ?

Get in. I hope it's a 4 year contract. Lets put this to bed and just get behind the manager. We have some sensible people running the club now.

These lot have been in since the start of the year. I'm sure they could've decided internally by the end of the season whether to keep him on without having a drawn out process following the cup final result if they really felt he was good enough.

He is getting a new contract aswel. This club is dead the next years.

Well would you look at that. I'm sure all the fans who wanted him gone will now get behind the team and support him next season.

Right decision. Get him a first choice CB, Neves to partner Mainoo, an extra attacker along with some defensive backups and I don't see why he wouldn't get at a minimum of 3rd next season. The guy has already shown he can get the team to qualify for champs league, can win trophies against the best and beat the big boys. With the right signings I'm fairly confident he can get us competing at the top in a season or 2.

The funniest thing about everyone being relieved about it not being Southgate is that this decision imo makes it more likely that Southgate will manage United soon

I'll be surprised if he's still here this time next year. Feels like Ineos wanted to sack him but there just wasn't a suitable replacement.

Needs to do better next season. No excuses this time.

Depends on your definition of "we". I certainly don't deserve this.

The collective fanbase does.

If this goes tits up, there's no more hiding behind 'it's the glazers fault'. The fanbase once again vocally made their opinion clear, the club wilted/followed it - now the entire football can watch and see if the fanbase has half a clue.

Fine with that by has come very late in the day. Let's see some quality recruitment and push for top four. No excuses.

I wanted him gone, but I'll back him.
Ironically, the fact that they did the review and it took as long as it did makes me feel they really took their time to investigate and come to the conclusion that he can be a good coach for us.
However, there aren't any excuses for Ten Haag regardless of what we do in the market.
The football we play has to be good this season from the very start. We cannot afford to waste another season.
INEOS have taken a massive gamble in keeping him, so they have to act as fast as possible if it doesn't seem to be working early. For me, this means as quickly as a sack in late September.

Ten Haag, regardless of who we buy, has the show that he can play football that produces chances and keeps us in control of games. No more ridiculous risks. His first season had spells of that type of football and for any support, he would have to show that United can dominate games consistently against teams as soon as preseason. He's starting with negative credit in the bank. He has to prove he's actually a good coach now.

My thoughts are that we are keeping him on due to belief in what he can offer in terms of the football side of things, based on his first season and his bringing through of some of our younger players. This decision means that they believe that he can coach, and they will remove the responsibilities on his plate regarding squad management and transfers. There are no excuses for him. I feel he played on the sentiment of our fans, which kept him his job. That wouldn't fly again...this time, if he doesn't step up, it would ruin his career. There won't be any "United didn't give him a chance" nonsense.

Think this stinks of the fact that they wanted to sack him but changed their mind after the final

I wanted him gone earlier in the season and he is very lucky to survive what was a catastrophic season by any manager. That said, I'll back him for the new season, but my optimism is pretty low.

Thrilled with decision.

Chopping and changing ain’t working for us. Man’s got us two trophies in two seasons. For where we are at as a club at present, that’s huge.

Nah. Like I said previously, I believe he’s completely safe for all of next season and up until middle of the following one regardless of results. If things are very bad then they will revisit but if he survived last season the bar for the upcoming couple of years has to be very, very low or else it’s unfair.

If he finishes 6th next season some will be asking for a parade and a trophy

In all seriousness if he gets up top 4 and a positive goal difference then another season would be fine. Anything below that and he'll have to go.

Scenes in the next press conference when ETH goes all Joe Kinnear on them.

"Which of you is Jacob Steinberg?" " You're a c...".
"Which of you is Treblechamp99"? "You know what you can do heh?"

Looks like we are stuck with him then. Not the decision I wanted, hope I'm wrong.

Here's hoping for a much improved season.

Hope. Ha, ha, ha... This is embarrassing, and very, very bad news. On a number of levels.

This is the man that paid £80m+ for Antony.

And he stays. Unreal. Unreal.

If you want to share tweets by stupid, go for it. If you're going to plaster angry opinions to pollute the thread I suggest you aim higher than Simon Jordan though.

Wilcox conducted the review. The review completed end of season. Wilcox presents his review for discussion. They compare ten hags well established pros and cons (as a result of the review), with the availability in the market after discussing face to face with alternatives.

They conclude from a thorough internal and external audit that they want to stick rather than twist.

Thats literally how audits operate. I work closely with audits, it's actually hilarious how daft Simon Jordan is in that tweet.

Far from jumping for joy but quietly pleased for the stability.

Reasons to be optimistic:

1) FA cup final proved the players are still behind ETH.

2) New structure behind him and maybe not rely on ETHs contacts for signings?

3) New signings to hopefully play closer to his vision of football (successfully).

4) Shaw and Martinez back fit after a pre season to play from the back better. Mount will hopefully play a bigger part and our young players are one season older.

5) Keeper hopefully settled in and a strong pre season.

6) Remove the dead weight players who aren’t buying into what the manager is doing.

7) Players that he has improved like Dalot can hopefully kick on again.

Lots more too, obviously tons of concerns too that I am sure the doom mongers will cover in laborious detail.

Bingo.

Similar thoughts with others. Not overly happy but not overly disappointed too as I knew it was a very strong possibility.

He will definitely be given a much shorter leash though going into next season, so he will have to get the tactics or at the very least results right from the get go.

Trying to keep optimistic as we do have a good squad of individuals that hopefully will be added to during the summer so I am looking forward to what we produce.

I won’t believe a word of it until
@TrebleChamp99 our resident ITK confirms it with one of his 2 sources.

I can live with the decision itself, but the decision-making process has been shambolic. Now you're in this weird situation where everybody knows that the club spoke to other options and the manager doesn't have the full trust of the board any more. Yet you still want to sign him to an extension? Not going to lie, that whole process doesn't really fulfill me with confidence in our new overlords.

Everyone including their cat, dog and ETH knew his position was under massive scrutiny. It was an objectively bad season. Even someone as stubborn as ETH (with his tactics) has the self awareness that he couldn't just command 100% buy in from the new board. If he's sane, he will be breathing a sigh of relief knowing he's got his job 'back' and also probably feeling a little vindicated, which imo although unjustified (i.e excuses about injuries etc), I totally understand. You've got be a little unhinged and arrogant about what your doing right (or wrong) to be believing in yourself at this level.

I don't buy this 'it's bit of a shambles', 'the managerial reviews after being in charge since January reeks of indecision and lack of foresight' etc. This was always going to be a difficult decision after the Fa Cup win and 'strong' finish to the season juxtaposed against the lack of strong alternative candidates.

I wish he got sacked, but he has to be kept on a tighter leash now. He is a decent coach, however his stubbornness cost us a lot.

I can’t see what he could possibly do to get fired from here. Barring some ridiculous run where we look like we are genuinely threatened with relegation (obviously not going to happen) we are not going to regress much from last season.
Well we might. We actually over achieved in the league when factoring our performances and statistics. If things “balance out” a bit more we could easily sink lower.
